Modern economic science studies the behavior of an individual making choice in conditions of limited resources, and seeking to satisfy his own interests as a result of this choice. Economics is a social science as it studies the behavior of an individual which involves the interests of other people and communities. Economics is close to natural sciences as it considers the behavior of an individual in a material world of limited resources. Besides, a human being may be considered as a material system in which there are certain biological processes influencing its behavior. The question of how fully can economics use methodological assumptions of natural sciences, is sharply debatable. The author's position is that the cooperation between economics and natural sciences has both objective grounds and objective problems. In any case, economics is not a natural science, and the natural sciences shouldn't have a priority in this dialogue. It is only a new stage in self-reflection of different sciences. The importance of this research is defined by the need of studying the scientific status of economics and the prospects of its development in terms of the subject and methodology.

The article analyzes Xenophon’s ‘Oeconomicus’, where he traced the emergence of economic science. In his work, Xenophon offers a broader understanding of the subject field of economics, including the ethical aspect. The article argues that it was in fact Xenophon rather than Aristotle who was the first economic theorist. Xenophon’s idea about the ethical foundations of economics was developed during the Renaissance and in the age of Enlightenment. Thus, economics went beyond the science of household management to the science about the quality of life and its enhancement. By looking at the origins of economic science (theory) and connecting them to the modern agenda we can ensure the methodological completeness of approaches to including ethics into economic theorizing. The article makes a special focus on strategic planning, which is one of the ways of combining ethics and economic practice.

The article analyzes and systematizes the scientific views of economists of the classical and neoclassical periods on the definition of welfare and the factors that affect it, the marginalist approach and the classics of modern economic thought in the welfare of the population. The generalization of views of scientists of different periods on the concept of determining welfare at different times, the change of focus in the study of welfare – from social to individual, which changed with the evolution of the place and role of man in economics - from resource material, the subject of labor supply, to agent of innovative thought and change factor. Based on the systematization of materials and generalizations, the author's scheme of evolution of the concept of well-being in the development of economic thought is constructed, which reflects the main periods of economic thought from XVIII to XXI century and the main defining ideas of each period, which influenced the specifics of understanding the well-being of each period. A number of modern approaches to determining the welfare of people in different countries, including representatives of Ukrainian economic thought, special attention is paid to the transition from purely material factors of welfare to socio-environmental and educational and medical criteria for society. It is emphasized that even at the present stage of the study the list of human well-being factors is far from exhaustive, as it often does not include psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of human well-being. An author's schematic three-level approach to the most relevant modern definition of human well-being components has been developed and proposed, which includes: basic or material level of well-being, average or psychological-emotional level, and higher or spiritual level. It is emphasized that the satisfaction from useless charitable deeds, or the ability to realize their individual abilities can many times exceed, quantitatively and qualitatively, the satisfaction obtained from the possession or use of material goods, provided that the person is not below poverty and has no other serious threats to its existence.

Review of the monograph indicated in the subtitle V.T. Ryazanov. The reviewer is critical of the position of the author of the book, believing that it is possible and even necessary (to increase the effectiveness of General economic theory and bring it closer to practice) substantial (and not just formal-conventional) synthesis of the Marxist system of political economy with its non-Marxist systems. The article emphasizes the difference between the subject and the method of the classical, including Marxist, school of political economy with its characteristic objective perception of the subject from the neoclassical school with its reduction of objective reality to subjective assessments; this excludes their meaningful synthesis as part of a single «modern political economy». V.T. Ryazanov’s interpretation of commodity production in the economic system of «Capital» of K. Marx as a purely mental abstraction, in fact — a fiction, myth is also counter-argued. On the issue of identification of the discipline «national economy», the reviewer, unlike the author of the book, takes the position that it is a concrete economic science that does not have a political economic status.

The article analyzes the philosophical and cultural view of “doctor’s professional culture” as a result of centuries-old practice of human relations, which is characterized by constancy and passed from generation to generation. Medicine is a complex system in which an important role is played by: philosophical outlook of a doctor, philosophical culture, ecological culture, moral culture, aesthetic culture, artistic culture. We have found that within the system “doctor-patient” the degree of cultural proximity becomes a factor that influences the health or life of a patient. Thus, the following factors are important here: 1) communication that suppresses a sick person; 2) the balance of cultural and intellectual levels; 3) the cultural environment of a patient which has much more powerful impact on a patient than the medical one.At the present stage, the interdependence of professional and humanitarian training of future specialists is predominant, as a highly skilled specialist can not but become a subject of philosophizing. We outlined the sphere where the doctors present a genre variety of philosophizing (philosophical novels, apologies, dialogues, diaries, aphorisms, confessions, essays, etc.). This tradition represents the original variations in the formation of future doctor’s communicative competences, which are formed in the process of medical students’ professional training.A survey conducted among medical students made it possible to establish their professional values, which are indicators of the formation of philosophical and culturological competence. It was found out that 92% of respondents believed that a doctor should demonstrate a high level of health culture (avoid drinking and smoking habits, etc.)99% of respondents favoured a high level of personal qualities of a doctor which would allow methods and forms of medical practice to assert higher human ideals of truth, goodness and beauty that are the subject area of cultural studies and philosophy.
