This paper discusses the nature and conclusions of the second phase of a two-part project, CrossEd, undertaken between autumn 2004 and autumn 2005 and funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee in the UK. The study investigated collaborations taking place between secondary schools and universities in the provision of information literacy skilling relating to the use of e-resources. A survey of all university libraries in the UK was undertaken using an e-mail questionnaire to identify the incidence of current collaboration. The data from that survey provided information on the types of collaboration taking place. These were categorised and used to select the survey population of six university libraries for the qualitative study. Data collection was by means of face-to-face and telephone interviews with university librarians, using semistructured interview schedules. Six types of training for school pupils were identified, and the research revealed at least seven distinct positive aspects of cross-sectoral collaboration for school pupils. A fundamental lack of understanding of the respective roles of secondary school and university librarians was evident, and a range of issues to be addressed by librarians in both educational sectors was identified. A strategy for enhancing collaboration in the UK is also discussed.

The study investigated the teaching of information literacy skills in select Junior Community Secondary Schools (CJSS) situated in the city of Gaborone, Botswana. Data were gathered from a sample of ten teacher librarians via face-to-face interviews with the aid of a five-question interview schedule. The key findings of the study were: (1) respondents had varying interpretations of. what constituted information literacy skills, (2) a variety of skills were taught under the rubric information literacy skills; (3) by and large, the teaching of information literacy skills was done by teacher-librarians and subject librarians, (4) the main approaches in teaching information literacy skills involved library orientation and the use of the English Language Period, and (5) respondents cited the three challenges, namely, the absence of an office dedicated to school libraries, an exam oriented curriculum and shrinking financial resources.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how micro and small craft brewery operators perceive and operationalise innovation. Moreover, in adopting the theory of innovation, the study addresses two under-researched areas, namely, innovation among micro and small firms and innovation in the context of the emerging craft brewing industry. Design/methodology/approach The perspectives of 163 craft brewery operators located in Italy, Spain, and the UK were gathered through online questionnaires. In total, 24 face-to-face and telephone interviews with operators from the three nations complemented the data collection process. Thus, in total, 187 operators participated. Findings Development of new craft beer styles, new recipes, exploring with various ingredients, improving quality, or involvement in social media and culinary tourism were predominant forms participants perceived innovation. Various differences regarding innovation adoption were noticed, particularly based on participants’ country and on their role at the brewery. Furthermore, associations between the findings and the dimensions of the theory of innovation were confirmed. Originality/value This study is original, in that it represents a first effort in comparing perceptions of craft brewery operators across various countries. This comparison identifies ways in which craft brewery operators could maximise the potential of their firms. For example, the manifested interest in innovating through new craft beer recipes, or blending gastronomy and craft beer underlines alternative forms of adding value to craft brewing production. Importantly, some of these innovating practices differ based on participants’ country; such differences could also be considered by craft brewery operators.

This study analysed sighted students’ prosocial behaviour towards assisting their peers with visual impairment (VI) in inclusive secondary schools in Iringa Municipality, Tanzania. An embedded single case study design was used. Seventy six respondents, consisting of teachers and students with and without VI participated in the study. Data was collected through semi-structured and face to face interviews, focus group discussions, and closed-ended questionnaires. Data was analysed through thematic analysis and presented in tables and quotations of participants’ actual words. Results have indicated differences in prosocial behaviours between sighted day-students and sighted boarding students with the latter being more prosocial as a result of altruistic and egoistic factors; having a positive attitude and due to the influence of religion and school administration . Similarities between sighted students and those with VI were linked to sighted students’ prosocial behaviour. The latter students’ attributions, and misunderstandings among students. determined their prosocial behaviour towards assisting their peers with VI. Awareness raising and sensitisation of members of the community, as well as replicating the study in inclusive and co-education schools for students with VI are recommended in the paper.

In 2014 Public Health England (PHE) launched the national physical activity (PA) framework ‘Everybody Active, Everyday’. The framework included a key domain for action called ‘Moving Professionals’. The Moving Professionals Programme aimed to build expertise and leadership across key professional sectors and to raise awareness and understanding of the health benefits of PA among professionals and the wider public. The Moving Professionals Programme comprised a number of innovative work packages that are described elsewhere (See Brannan et al., 2019). The Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) pilot was one element of the Moving Professionals Programme, and aimed to embed an SEM consultant led PA service within an NHS Trust to integrate PA in to the care plans of patients. This was termed creating an 'Active Hospital'.PHE and Sport England invited expressions of interest (EoIs) from NHS Trusts with the capacity to deliver the SEM pilot through a competitive process. Three Trusts were invited to interview and Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT) were selected to deliver the pilot. The successful Trust was tasked with developing an SEM pilot that strengthened existing core resources and expanded existing capacity to integrate specialist PA advice into the care pathways for adults in-patient care. This was tested across five clinical pathways within OUHFT where PA had not previously been targeted as a treatment intervention.Two lead SEM consultants were responsible for developing and implementing the SEM pilot, which targeted five clinical pathways and was underpinned by the COM-B model. These were; Maternity, Enablement, Renal, Complex Medical Unit (originally Critical Care), and Cardiology.As part of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) network, academics at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) were commissioned to conduct an independent evaluation of the SEM pilot. The NCSEM were not responsible for the implementation or delivery of the SEM pilot. The evaluation aimed to explore the acceptability and feasibility of the SEM pilot and followed a mixed methods approach. Data was collected from patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) using surveys, face-to-face and telephone interviews and audits between June 2018 and March 2019. This report details the evaluation findings and provides implications for ongoing implementation of the pilot in OUHFT and for sharing learning with other Trusts across the UK.

Purpose This paper aims to outline work to support the employability agenda in the Library at the University of Sheffield, set in the context of debates about the nature of employability, employability skills and information literacy in the workplace. Design/methodology/approach The paper starts with a brief review of literature on employability and student skills in the UK higher education sector, the place of information literacy as an employability attribute and information literacy in the workplace. It goes on to outline work done in the Library at the University of Sheffield to support the employability agenda. This includes the development of a commercial awareness workshop in collaboration with other services and the incorporation of student and alumni voices in an employability guide. Findings The literature reviewed highlights the differences between information literacy in the workplace and academia. This could present challenges and opportunities in promoting information literacy as an employability attribute. The case study highlights the benefits of working in collaboration with students and services beyond the library in the employability arena. Originality/value The approaches taken in Sheffield may be of interest to other institutions looking to develop support for the employability agenda.

Aims and objectives: the purpose of this pilot study was to explore the attitudes and perceptions of members of the UK public towards self-care for minor ailments. Background: with an ageing and increasing population, and an NHS under extreme pressure, methods to reduce demand on health services are vital. Increasing the use of self-care for minor ailments is one way in which this pressure could be alleviated. Design and method: this study used qualitative methods including semi-structured telephone interviews. The data were then evaluated, and key themes drawn out using thematic analysis. Findings: the results showed that the public are aware of the notion of self-care, and some are engaging with it. However, for a number of reasons, patients are still likely to want a face-to-face appointment despite the use of online and telephone advice services. Conclusion: the study highlighted that there are multifactorial aspects impacting on a patient's likelihood of engaging in self-care when faced with a minor illness. The results are not generalisable to every member of the public, but interesting questions are raised with regard to the usefulness of current public health messages in various media when there appears to be a lack of desire from the public to use some recommended services.

Purpose The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the perceived resources, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats from the perspective of micro and small brewery owners, managers and brewing masters operating in three countries. To this end, the study adopts the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, complemented by a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis. Design/methodology/approach The research provides a mixed-methods approach. Data were collected from craft breweries in Italy, Spain and the UK. In all, 165 valid responses were obtained from an online questionnaire, and an additional 24 face-to-face and telephone interviews with craft brewing operators in these three countries were conducted to further enrich the data. Independent samples t-test and Scheffé post hoc were used to analyse part of the quantitative data, while content analysis and word association were used for the qualitative component. Findings Product quality and uniqueness of product emerged as important perceived resources and strengths, suggesting an alignment with some of the resource-related attributes postulated by the RBV, such as valuable, rare and (un)substitutable. Other elements, such as natural and sustainable resources, including water quality and the current and future involvement in growing or sourcing raw products locally emerged as key resources, and are suggested as additional attributes. These strategic and tangible resources are however challenged by perceived weaknesses, particularly lack of financial, infrastructure and commercialisation resources, as well as threats from competition. Originality/value The exploratory study focuses on craft brewing from the perspective of micro/small operators. This industry has received very limited attention from the literature. The use of the RBV, with the potential to increase understanding of an emerging industry, and develop the theory further in this domain, adds to the originality and value of this research.

Current literature has identified a growing achievement gap experienced by students raised in poverty. However, some students from poverty can defeat the odds and succeed academically with advanced degrees. Nine graduate students self-identified as being raised in poverty participated in this study. The home-related experiences that led to their academic success were explored. Basic qualitative inquiry and constructivist narrative analysis were used as a framework for this study. Data collection methods included face-to-face and telephone interviews. Data transcriptions were coded and analyzed using the constant comparative method. Findings suggest that graduate students raised in poverty need a broad support system inside and outside the home. They also indicated that activities and routines were critical to their continued academic success and how academic work often became an escape from the chaos around them. This study calls attention to the academic importance of a broader support network for students raised in poverty.

The literature reveals a clear debate around the use of Web 2.0 tools in information literacy (IL) instruction, with some commentators arguing that they effectively support pedagogy and others arguing that there is no sustained evidence for this. Instead, they argue that many librarians are reluctant to use the tools, hindering their overall adoption. This mixed-methods study incorporated a survey and interview to explore this debate. The aim of the study was to analyse the adoption and perception of Web 2.0 tools for IL teaching specifically within university libraries in the United Kingdom. The results revealed that there is initial evidence to suggest that a large proportion of librarians are actively using Web 2.0 tools to support IL pedagogy, but that there is also a smaller group that has a negative reaction to them and do not consider them beneficial. This study provides new knowledge for researchers around the use of technology in IL teaching and librarians’ perception of it, addressing a key gap in the literature around the UK university sector. Additionally, it is particularly useful for practitioners, as the issues it raises can improve the use of technology in IL teaching.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine fairness within financial services. In making the contribution the authors examine fairness by four different channels to market and across a range of financial services products. The product categories in the study are those with the highest density levels in the UK. Design/methodology/approach – Underpinned by the development of new measures, this paper is based on telephone interviews and on-line surveys with UK customers of financial services. More than 1,000 customers participated in the survey during the middle of 2013. After reporting the measurement model, the authors use ANOVA to report the differences in the perception of the dimensions of fairness by channel to market. Findings – The authors found there to be significant differences in perceptions using different channels to market. The research shows that where a face-to-face interaction takes place, such as branch contact, they are perceived to be fairer than when interactions are more remote. Given the dimensions of fairness, this reveals the importance of communications during explanations so that interactions are deemed to be fair. Research limitations/implications – The focus of this research was the examination of fairness within the setting of the UK’s financial services sector. The authors are minded that if the research is replicated in other countries or contexts then different aspects of fairness might emerge. Practical implications – Given the challenges faced by the financial services sector, there are implications for practitioners because they must be seen to be treating customers fairly. The research shows that remote contact such as the internet is not perceived as being as fair as face-to-face contact. The fair treatment of customers is likely to lead to positive brand benefits. Originality/value – This study complements the understanding of fairness and provides insight for scholars and practitioners, within financial services.
