This research examines the relationship between community participation in public space decisions and the wellbeing of marginalised communities. A cross-disciplinary literature review and four New Zealand case studies investigate if community participation in public space design enhances the wellbeing of marginalised communities, and if so, how this is best done. The findings from the literature review, case study interviews and surveys show strong evidence that participation in place-making does enhance the wellbeing of marginalised communities in New Zealand. Furthermore, four aspects of community wellbeing stand out as being most significantly enhanced by participatory processes. These are an increased empowerment, enhanced vision-making and advocacy capabilities, an increased collective action and an enhanced sense of pride, belonging and connectedness to community. The findings also identify a comprehensive range of processes that are critical to effective participatory projects. The range includes community-led support initiatives, community involvement in social analysis, celebration events, engagement processes for visioning and decision-making, work-group collaboration, involvement in implementing, partnerships with stakeholders and post-project involvements. Two actions that are critical to gaining authentic engagement in these processes is participant involvement in the initial preparation processes and the appointment of a community advocate to plan and facilitate the participatory process. This research is distinguished by identifying effective participatory processes that are typically under-utilised or not considered in conventional public consultation work. Furthermore, it provides strong evidence that these participatory processes enhance the wellbeing of marginalised communities.

Palabras Clave: Contemporaneidad, Tiempo Histórico, Historia comprensiva, Didáctica de la historiaAn Action-Research on Historical TimeAbstractThis article is divided into four sections. In the first place, we find the introduction, which justifies the importance of systematically applying to the teaching and learning process of history, the temporary concept of contemporaneity. Secondly, it describes the research process developed, including model, methodology, tools and context. It is an action-research model of teaching approach of history that, as a case study, aims to give an answer to the problem of understanding of historical time by my own students. Thirdly, the results of the research are presented and, finally, conclusions are drawn, highlighting the importance of teaching and learning of historical time and specifically of contemporaneity, as a basis for the development of a more comprehensive and functional history, capable of breaking the traditional Eurocentrism and lay the foundations of a global history. Keywords: Contemporaneity, Historical Time, Comprehensive History, Didactics of historyUma investigação-ação sobre tempo históricoResumoEste artigo está dividido em quatro seções. Abstract: This case study was conducted by researchers engaged in “Understanding the Strengths of Indigenous Communities,” a research project involving five participating First Nations (see http://www.usic.ca). This particular study describes the centrality of cultural activities and beliefs in strengthening the community of the Batchewana First Nation. Deploying an innovative form of methodology, which stresses community participation in the development of the research process for the purposes of decolonization, the article explores how this community approaches culture from a holistic worldview. The findings suggest that cultural renewal is self-reinforcing and cumulative, and plays a key role in overcoming collective trauma, but that these benefits can be jeopardized through a lack of resources.

Some researchers continue to engage in “helicopter” or “parachute” research and do not ethically engage or collaborate with communities from which data are collected. This paper uses a case study to discuss the ethical issues arising from these research practices and the importance of increasing meaningful community involvement in research. Set in the context of research among older people living with HIV, the case study is followed by the perspectives of four research stakeholders. Through these perspectives, this paper demonstrates the ethical perils and harms that stem from research practices exemplified in the case. We argue instead for researchers to practice participatory research methods in line with community-based participatory research approaches (CBPR), good participatory practices (GPP), the Denver Principles, and CIOMS guidelines. Towards this end, we describe tools developed in collaboration with stakeholders in the research process to help researchers incorporate community participation and reduce unethical research conduct.

The wind industry is positioned to contribute significantly to a clean energy future, yet the level of community opposition has at times led to unviable projects. Social acceptance is crucial and can be improved in part through better practice community engagement and benefit-sharing. This case study provides a “snapshot” of current community engagement and benefit-sharing practices for Australian wind farms, with a particular emphasis on practices found to be enhancing positive social outcomes in communities. Five methods were used to gather views on effective engagement and benefit-sharing: a literature review, interviews and a survey of the wind industry, a Delphi panel, and a review of community engagement plans. The overarching finding was that each community engagement and benefit-sharing initiative should be tailored to a community’s context, needs and expectations as informed by community involvement. This requires moving away from a “one size fits all” approach. This case study is relevant to wind developers, energy regulators, local communities and renewable energy-focused non-government organizations. It is applicable beyond Australia to all contexts where wind farm development has encountered conflicted societal acceptance responses.
