In this statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics reaffirms the importance of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), which guarantees people with disabilities certain rights to enable them to participate more fully in their communities. Pediatricians need to know about the ADA provisions to be able to educate and counsel their patients and patients' families appropriately. The ADA mandates changes to our environment, including reasonable accommodation to the needs of individuals with disabilities, which has application to schools, hospitals, physician offices, community businesses, and recreational programs. Pediatricians should be a resource to their community by providing information about the ADA and the special needs of their patients, assisting with devising reasonable accommodation, and counseling adolescents about their expanded opportunities under the ADA.

During the past several years as Chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Pediatric Manpower I have witnessed the development of the concept of the pediatric nurse associate (PNA) within the specialty of pediatrics. In addition, I have also been aware of the controversies within the AAP membership regarding the role of the PNA in child health care delivery. Many of you will recall the concern of the mid-1960's which widely publicized an impending catastrophic shortage of pediatricians.

Shadow teaching is a professional service offered to the school and family to better manage the needs of students who have a learning difference.   Shadow teachers are employed by the parents to work with their child at school. This study tries to answer the following questions: what is the role of the shadow teacher in the classroom? To what extent do shadow teacher help in improving students' ability in learning? What are the key elements for successful shadow teaching?  To achieve the purpose of the study, the researcher prepared a questionnaire concerning the questions of the study and observed the shadow teacher's performance in the class room in the American Academy Nablus. Means, standard deviations and percentages were calculated by using SPSS program. The present study revealed the following results:  Shadow teacher plays an important role in providing additional support, throughout the school day, academically and psychologically, to those students enrolled in the Optimal Learning (OL) program that need this additional support. In the light of the present study, the researcher recommended providing Palestinian schools with shadow teachers to help students with special need.

The following paper argues for the potential relevance of scholarship on New Testament/Christian origins to the study of religion generally, in response to recent institutional developments that have driven the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion to hold separate meetings. The paper claims that Christian Origins scholarship suggests a series of cautions — about originary stories, the boundaries of traditions, and the predictability of historical developments — as well as some substantive contributions — regarding the desultory character of ‘‘religious’’ interventions, the role of narrative, and the input of intellectuals — to our views of religion that should be of interest to students of other data-sets. At the same time, and in some ways more to the point, it is incumbent upon those scholars of Christian Origins who aim to situate their scholarship within the larger field of the study of religion to be willing to generalize and not only to draw broad conclusions about the development and origins of ancient Christianity, but also to ensure that their own analyses and conclusions are, at least potentially, formulatable in terms of expansive generalizations about human behavior. Thus not only does the incorporation of Christian origins into the study of religion potentially add at least to the relevant data-set of the latter, but it may also be a way to enhance the responsibility and intelligibility of the former.

The Psychosocial Committee is to be commended for its report on the pediatrician and divorce in the July issue of Pediatrics. I would like to add the following: The role of the pediatrician should extend well beyond the divorce and immediate adjustment process. Firstly, there should be greater involvement between both the pediatrician and the Family Court system to help prevent misplacement of the child in custody decisions. (I believe that various groups within the American Academy of Pediatrics are already working with judicial/legal groups to bring to them a greater knowledge of child development and mental health).
