This study examines the effectiveness of production-oriented approach in college English reading and writing teaching. Sixty-eight students in their first-year study participated in this study. They were assigned the control group (CG, thirty-four students from the discipline of power engineering) and the experimental group (EG, thirty-four students from the discipline of electronic engineering). Pre-test indicated no significant difference between CG and EG in terms of reading and writing performance. During the teaching experiment, the two groups were taught under the traditional teaching approach and POA respectively. Subsequent post-test revealed that CG showed significant increase in reading skills as compared to EG, and that no significant difference was found between CG and EG in writing scores, but EG in general did much better in word choices, content and structure in writing. Possible reasons for the findings are explained and further suggestions for implementing POA effectively are put forward.

The listening teaching incorporated with computer web-based learning platform technology, has offered the opportunity for English listening teaching. This paper firstly introduces the web-based teaching platform development and related technologies, selects the Moodle platform as the on-line platform, and then designs the teaching experiment of college English listening on the basis of this platform. In the experiment, this paper, taking the 128 non-English major students of one university in China as object of study, conducts the contrast experiment between the Moodle-based listening teaching and traditional listening teaching, and makes statistical analysis of the experimental results by the questionnaire survey as well as the pre-experiment and after-experiment methods. The study in this paper promotes the application of web-based teaching platform in English listening teaching, and has positive effects on promoting the students’ learning enthusiasm and listening education reform.

The “production-oriented approach” or POA theory believes that foreign language teaching should embrace such focus as “learning-centered”, “learning and use integration” and “key capabilities cultivation”. Besides, foreign language teaching should be designed as a process that starts with production and ends with production. In view of the merits of network resources and platforms in blended teaching mode as well as teaching process of “driving, facilitating, and evaluating” in POA, this paper explores the combination of POA and blended teaching to research on the feasibility and effectiveness of applying it to the teaching of college English writing in private undergraduate colleges. By analyzing the relevant research theoretical basis and research status, the author further elaborates on the specific implementation process of applying POA based on blended teaching in the college English writing teaching of private undergraduate colleges from the aspects of research significance research subjects, research methods, research content and data analysis. In terms of research content, the author specifically expounds the procedures from such detailed parts as before-class stage: production drive + online autonomous learning, in-class stage: input facilitating + offline classroom teaching, after-class stage: evaluation to promote learning + online correction and classroom display. This paper is expected to promote students’ writing interests and proficiency so as to provide a valuable reference for the reform of college English writing teaching methods.

With the development of language research and language teaching, people realize that grammatical competence is an important part of communicative competence. In foreign language teaching, grammar teaching is not only necessary but also the main way to achieve the goal of communicative competence. This article mainly studies the virtual reality technology college English immersive context teaching method based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The purpose is to improve students’ English learning ability. Through the comparative teaching experiment of two classes of freshmen in a university, the experimental class conducted VR technology-based immersive virtual context teaching from the perspective of constructivism, while the control class adopted common multimedia equipment and traditional teaching methods. In the classroom, teachers occupy most of the time, students only passively receive a lot of information from teachers, they have little chance to participate in the exchange of information and express ideas in the target language, and most of the time they are “immersed” in the Chinese environment. The overall English level was also better than that of the control class, with an average score of 2.8 points higher. This shows that college English immersive context teaching combining constructivism theory and VR technology can indeed improve students’ English level.
