ABSTRACT Purpose: to discuss the speech-language-hearing pathologist’s training to work in education, based on the report from speech-language-hearing students. Methods: a total of 29 students in the seventh semester of the Speech-Language-Hearing program at two higher education institutions participated in this study. The questionnaire used was developed specifically for this study. It comprised open- and closed-ended questions on the profile of the students and their training to work in educational settings. Data were also collected on the syllabi of the courses related to Educational Speech-Language-Hearing Pathology at both institutions. The data were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Results: the results indicated that the summed course load of the education-related courses is low, and their syllabi do not cover important aspects for the speech-language-hearing training aimed at the work in education. Also, the students reported that most of the practical activities took place in kindergarten or elementary school, with objectives related to a medical-centered view. The students also pointed out the need for improvements in the speech-language-hearing training to work in education. Conclusion: the students reported that their training should involve a broader course load, as well as contents and experiences to help them to consciously, critically, and responsibly join the educational setting.

Abstract The present challenging environment determines organizations to differentiate themselves from their competitors finding creative solutions. Business Excellence Models (BEMs) is the appropriate instrument for organizations to create authentic competitive advantages. In dynamic and changing environments characterized by technological changes, a sustainable advantage requires strong dynamic capabilities and integrated elements of BEMs. A comparative analysis of BEMS evolution presented in the paper reflects the challenges and opportunities for further improvement in organizations. Excellence models have been used successfully also in business education. Business education reflects the added value to sound economic development, balancing social and economic interest (Emiliani, 2004). In general, it refers to competitive and motivated academic staff, quality of teaching and learning activities, leadership and management commitment, sustainability of university-business relationship, internationalization strategy and comprehensive curriculum adapted to business environment. There are a lot of environmental forces in different national environments that are placing the excellence dimension on higher education agenda. At the same time, limitations of BEMs models and the nature of higher education institutions put a lot of challenges on leadership and management of these organizations. The objective of the paper is to present and analyse the application of excellence models in higher education institutions and identify creative solutions for management performance.

Abstract: Higher education institutions (HEIs) are traditionally seen as society's robust institutions but are currently experiencing new difficulties as a result of shifts in both government and society's expectations of their roles as education providers. There is a global call for new models and practices which need HEIs in the private sector to develop what was once business-oriented management competencies. Hence this study addressed the global call for HEIs in Malaysia to be more entrepreneurial and explored the experiences of entrepreneurs who had ventured into the education industry with the aims of business diversification, capacity building, lifelong education and nation-building. The qualitative study explored the context of private universities in Malaysia which included the socio-historical background and experience of seven founders, and their management approaches in establishing their HEIs as successful, sustainable and respectable education providers. A grounded theory approach was adopted to gather data through in-depth interviews with the participants. Their emic perspectives of the challenges and opportunities experienced while managing their respective universities was analysed thematically. The findings revealed that new ventures into private higher education must be spearheaded by individuals with entrepreneurial leadership who would be able to develop and enhance the dynamic capabilities necessary for successfully managing a university. These leaders must also capitalize on the opportunities available and form a team of agile and resilient staff who can withstand and manage changes in the environment. The study also provides a guideline for managing private universities in a more cost-effective manner.   Keywords: Dynamic Capability, Entrepreneurial Universities, Higher Education Institutions, Leadership

In this article, the authors modify and use the metaphor of "a wolf in sheep's clothing" as the theme in uncovering racism aimed at Chicanos in higher education. The authors, who are new to the academic profession, as are many Chicanos in the field, discover that the old wolf, racism, is as active in academia as in their previous educational settings. In elementary and secondary schools the wolf's disguises include educational tracking low expectations, and negative stereotypes. Chicanos who have overcome these obstacles and who are attempting to break into the faculties and administrations of U.S. higher education institutions are finding the wolf in a new wardrobe. The authors identify the various disguises used to hide racism by higher education faculties and administrations.
