The power quality issues in the world today are critical to the development of different nations. Prosperity of each nation depends on availability of constant power supply and the quality of supply of power is very important to the required developments in world in the past, the present and the future. Constant power supply is a major challenge in Africa particularly in Nigeria where the generated power is less than thirty percent of the required power. The metrics of power quality are voltage sag, flickers, spikes, harmonics, notching, transients and interruptions. This paper reviewed power quality issues and the interruptions as they affect the development of the State. The level of interruptions in Ekiti State was thoroughly examined and the causes of power interruption in the State were investigated. The method used was the collection of data in respect of power interruptions on Ekiti feeders from the Benin distribution company, assessment of the collected data through simple programming as a command for plotting the graphs through the use of MATLAB 2015 depicting the behavioural pattern of the interruption for a period of six months in 2016. The result shows that the interrelationship between the interruptions and development particularly as it affects domestic consumers, small and medium scale enterprise adversely. Recommendations were suggested with the objective of solving the problems being set up by interruptions in the State and these include installation of reactors, automatic voltage regulators and effective tap changing system on the lines, busses and transformer substation respectively.

This paper examines the power quality of Ado-Ekiti metropolis in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The metrics of power quality includes: disturbances such as interruptions, voltage sags, spikes and momentary losses, power harmonics, and voltage unbalances with intrinsic effects on the efficiency and performances on the electric equipment. The necessity for this paper is the fluctuations of voltage supplied to the consumers by the distribution company in Ekiti State. These have significant effects on the power delivered to consumers ‘appliances, quality of their lives and the development of the society at large. The quality of voltage of each consumer in the selected areas were measured with the aid of digital multimeter which was compared with the standard nominal voltage of 240V, voltage deviations were evaluated through the use of standard mathematical equation and linear regression model was employed on the calculated voltage deviation with day and time used as inputs and the voltage deviation as the output. The implementation of the modelling was achieved through the use of Microsoft Excel data tool. The power quality for areas1, 2, 3 for the hours under consideration were poor with respect to R2 range of above 0.5 but better than that area 4 with R2 value of less than 0.5.The results were compared and recommendations were made with the view of improving the power quality in the metropolis.

The rapidly increasing usage of high-powered devices and the high specification in personal and industrial/medical devices has led to a greater demand for a SMPS for high-powered devices. A stable and reliable power source for such devices and research on power quality monitoring systems are needed. To these ends, this paper introduces a SMPS monitoring system based on ZigBee communication. The SMPS monitoring system uses ZigBee to collect the voltage, current, and temperature data from SPMS in real time. The collected data are visually synchronized and the current power supply status is displayed to the operator. In addition, to prevent any decline in the quality of the power, the system gives feedback via smartphone to the operator if errors are detected.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to help the researchers, public, industries and government to realize the tremendous trends to improve the power quality of both sources and load side. Design/methodology/approach The work carried out in the Facts device and power quality issues. Findings Maintaining the quality of electric power is always a challenging task. The effect of power electronics devices leads to improper power quality. The use of FACTS devices is preferably the best approach to treat power-quality-related problems. Usually, all FACTS devices are constructed to operate on the side of either the source side or the load. Originality/value This paper explores a broad comprehensive study of various types of power quality problems and classification of FACTS devices with its recent developments. Furthermore unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is particularly reviewed to highlight the advantages over other compensating devices. An exhaustive study of literature has been carried out and most significant concepts are presented

In a rural power grid 220kV transformer substation in Liaoning Province, because of the appearance of a lot of new impact loads in the power supply area, the original reactive power repertory can not meet the existing load need. As a result, the output 66kV voltage fluctuation affects the power supply security of the users. After a comprehensive evaluation, it is planned to set up a set of ±100M SVG to increase the reactive power repertory to stabilize the system voltage. The electrical system of 220kV transformer substation is huge and often meets with sudden failure; and the capacity of this set of SVG is large, so it may worsen the situation in case of improper control. This paper discusses several operational modes that SVG should have and designs a scheme that can be flexibly switched in several operational modes, which is specifically executed by an overall coordination module. This method has passed the preliminary field operation verification.

AbstractThe aim of the present work is to evaluate the power quality (PQ) required in individual customers in low voltage (LV), along an electrical circuit of 13.8 kV, in a distribution network standardized in urban area and with diversity of energy consumption profiles. Energy, including comprehended parts of the region with downside against financial rates. The data is useful in this sales environment of a Brazilian distribution company. These data were developed by the data mediation systems for a communication interface that enable to identify and evaluate PQ disturbance. The results of the surveys is compared with limits reported in Module 8 of the National Electric Energy Distribution Procedures (PRODIST), according to Brazilian Regulation Agency (ANEEL), that is, the pre-definition of rules, standards, parameters, and procedures about the quality of electric power supplied and the quality of the service provided. The PRODIST Procedure has a major analysis focused in the voltage supplied. The data sensors are based on studies of Duration Relative of Predary Stress (DRP) and Duration Relative of Transgression for Critical Stress (DRC). In this paper the results are presented and the challenged to supply this area with diversity of consumer profiles is commented.

The technology transformation of industry 4.0 comprises computers, power converters such as variable speed devices, and microprocessors, which distract from the quality of power. The integration of distribution-generation technologies, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind systems with source grids, frequently uses power converters, which increases the issues with power quality. DSTATCOM is the FACTS device most proficient in recompensing current-related power quality concerns. A model of DSTATCOM with an ANN controller was developed and implemented using a backpropagation online learning-based algorithm for balanced non-linear loads. This algorithm minimized the mathematical burden and the complications of control. It demonstrated a dynamic role in improving the quality of the power at the grid. The algorithm was implemented in MATLAB using an ANN model controller and the results were validated with an experimental set-up using an FPGA controller.
