English Debate Technique in Senior High School in Improving Student’s Speaking Ability and Applying Knowledge Insight

This research is to improve students’ speaking ability in giving opinions and responding to another’s opinion through debate. The goal of language learning is to communicate. Therefore, it will be useless for a language learner who cannot use the language at the end of the study. As one of the English skills to learn, speaking stands as an important aspect to be learned and surely it can apply knowledge insight. Through English Debate as a technique, the students are expected to be more confident in delivering their point of view in many issues in whatever circumstances. The methodology of this research is a classroom action research which consisted of 3 cycles. The subject of this research was the tenth-grade students of  SMA Negeri 1 Baros, the class consists of 36 students. To collect the data, the researcher used the observation checklist and field notes. Through an observation checklist, the researcher observed students’ activity in the classroom and by using field notes, the researcher reflected the problem found. Based on the research findings, the debate technique which was applied to the subjects of research showed the improvement of students’ speaking ability. Based on the result of the researcher’s observation using the observation checklist and form of field notes, it can be seen that students’ speaking ability in giving opinions and responding to another’s opinion has been improved. The percentage of students’ activity in the classroom when debate, in the first cycle, was 57%, in the second cycle was 67% and the third cycle was 76%. It indicated that the debate technique had improved students’ speaking ability in giving opinions and responding to another’s opinion. The debate in language teaching contains the principles of the debate teaching-learning process, and the teaching procedures, which will discuss how it is conducted procedurally in the classroom.

The ability to speak in English is one of the requisite skills for vocational high school students majoring in hospitality training. However, most tenth-grade students manifested insufficient skills in speaking English, which resulted in low confidence in speaking. To cope with the challenge, the researchers implemented modified role-play and guided writing to stimulate students in speaking English in classroom action research. The procedure of the research consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The researchers employed observation, questionnaire, documentation and field notes in collecting the data. The research findings presented that the students’ motivation to practice their speaking had increased significantly. Thus, the researchers conclude that role-play and guided writing can be used as a communicative activity where students can simultaneously practise and improve their proficiency in communicating. The researchers also propose suggestion to fellow English teachers to effectively manage the time as well as engaging media to create an enjoyable atmosphere in the teaching-learning process through role-play and guided writing.

This research aims to find out the impact of video dubbing on improving students’ speaking pronunciation. This research was applied for the tenth grade and eleventh grade of Vocational High School in Madiun city, province of East Java, Indonesia. The subject of the research consisted of 20 students, 14 female students and 6 male students. In collecting the data, researcher used observation to observe the implementation of video dubbing during teaching learning process and used test to find the improvement of students’ speaking pronunciation during the implementation of video dubbing. The research was conducted in two cycles, where each cycle consisted of 4 meetings. The research findings showed that the implementation of video dubbing could improve students’ speaking pronunciation. It can be concluded that the implementation of video dubbing in learning process has beneficial effect on students’ speaking skill, especially in pronunciation. Keywords: video dubbing, teaching speaking, pronunciation.

The research was aimed to investigate the use of diary writing to overcome students’ problem in writing recount texts. The problems include writing a recount text in chronological order, writing correct verb changes and developing ideas. Classroom action research was conducted by applying diary as the technique to help students overcome their problem. There were two cycles conducted in this research. The data were taken from the students’ individual score, observation checklist, and field notes. The result showed that teaching writing through diary writing improved students’ writing recount text. Referring to the research findings, the data showed that diary writing improved students’ recount text, as seen in their score. These in terms of score, students’ improved from 71.96 to 76.03 and improving the motivation to the students which makes them eager to write also makes the teaching learning process better. In conclusions, students’ writing recount text of the tenth grade students of class IPS 1 of SMAN 4 Sungai Raya in academic year 2018/2019 improved by using diary.

Reading is one of the four language skills taught in the English language learning process besides listening, speaking, and writing. This research aims to know the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi and to know the factors of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted in march 2020. The subject of research was the tenth-grade MIPA 5 of SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi who were detected that they had difficulties in reading comprehension. The techniques for collecting the data were interviews and documents. the researcher collected the data such as students’ worksheet. The second was data reduction. The researcher classified and reduced the data based on focus. The researcher deleted several data that did not relate to the difficulties in reading comprehension. The third was the data display, the researcher arranged the information to conclude. The researcher presented the data from the difficulties in reading comprehension, and the last is the conclusion. The result of the research showed that some students had difficulties in reading comprehension and they had difficulty in different levels, namely literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, critical comprehension, and creative comprehension. The most difficulties experienced by students were at the level of creative comprehension. The factor of the students’ difficulties in comprehension at tenth grade, there was an inadequate instruction presented by the teacher, lack of pupils’ interest, and the vocabulary difficulties. Keywords: Students’ Difficulties, Reading Comprehension

This study aims to discover the improvement of the students’ achievement in writing narrative text by applying Spore Strategy. The objective of this study is to find out whether the Spore strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text or not. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA 2 of SMA Negeri 6 Medan which consists of 34 students. This study applied quantitative and qualitative data. The data of this study were obtained quantitatively through writing test which show that the students score kept improving in every test and qualitatively based on diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet which show that teaching learning process ran well, the students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. In the first test, the mean score was 56.8. In the second test, the mean score was 67.2, and in the third test the mean score was 81.2.The research findings indicated that Spore Strategy significantly improved students’ achievement in writing narrative text.   Keywords: Writing, Spore Strategy, Test, Data, Classroom Action Research.

This study is aimed at improving the second grade of students’ speakingachievement by using Community Language Learning (CLL) Method. Theresearch was conducted by applying classroom action research. The subject of thisstudy was second grade of Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah AtasSwasta) of Dwi Tunggal Tanjung Morawa which consisted of 31 students. Tocollect the data, the instruments used were primary data (SpeakingTest) andsecondary data (interview sheet, observation sheet, field notes). It can be seenfrom the score in test I, test II and test III. In the Test I, the mean of the students’score was (64.77), in the Test II was (71.35), and the mean of the students’ scoreof the Test III was (80.90). Based on the interview, and observation sheet, itshows that the expression and excitement of the students got improved as well. Itwas found that teaching of speaking by using Community Language Learningcould significantly improve students’ speaking achievement.

<p>The objectives of the research are: (1) to find out whether or not picture series can improve students’ speaking fluency; (2) to describe the classroom situation when picture series is applied in teaching speaking. The subject of the research is the students of class X.8 of Senior High School. The research data were collected through observation, interview, field notes, document analysis, photographs, and tests including pre-test and post test. The qualitative data were analyzed by assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting the outcomes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test and the post test. The research findings show that Picture Series could improve: (1) students’ speaking fluency and (2) classroom situation of English class. The improvement of students’ speaking fluency can be seen from students’ mean score increased from 60.81 in pre-test into 73.78 in post-test 1 and it improves to 82.97 in post-test 2. The description of classroom situation includes :(a) The students looked very interested and enthusiastic to join the speaking class and (b) the students were more active during teaching learning process.</p>

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Demonstration Method on students’ achievement in speaking skill. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XII, Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan: SMK), which consisted of 79 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.7, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant m = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 77, t-observed value 8.9 > t-table value 1.99. The findings indicate that using Demonstration Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in speaking skill. So, English teachers are suggested to use Demonstration Method in order to improve students’ achievement in speaking skill.
