The article reflects the issues of the current state of scientific research at the FSBSI FSVC, shows the directions and prospects for the development of selection and seed production of vegetable crops. The main mission of the selection and seed-growing work of the FSVC is the creation and reproduction of varieties and hybrids of vegetable and melon crops of a new generation, characterized by resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors, high productivity and product quality. One of the main ways to increase the efficiency of the breeding process is the use of modern methods of biotechnology and molecular genetics, which make it possible to obtain new genotypes and reduce the time of breeding. Success has been achieved in the creation of homozygous lines of cabbage, squash, cucumber, carrots. For the first time, it was possible to complete a full cycle of obtaining doubled radish haploids in microspore culture in vitro. The institution pays special attention to immunological research on the resistance of crops and new varieties to diseases, as well as protecting plants from pests and diseases. Phytosanitary monitoring, assessment and selection of resistant genotypes are carried every years. One of the important theoretical and practical problems solved at the institution is the development of environmentally friendly products based on preparations obtained from plants with a high content of biologically active compounds with adaptogenic properties. In the center, a new direction of research in traditional breeding has received significant development - the creation of varieties of vegetable plants with an increased content of biologically active substances and antioxidants, on the basis of which functional products are created. The persistence of modern varieties and hybrids of table carrots, depending on the biochemical composition, has been studied. Methods for enriching vegetable plants with micronutrients are being developed. A large amount of scientific research is being carried out on the development of technologies for the cultivation of new varieties and hybrids, as well as technologies for their seed production. At the branches located in different soil and climatic conditions, hospitals were established to study the interaction of factors controlling soil fertility and the productivity of vegetable crops in agrocenoses (crop rotation, soil treatment systems, fertilizers and plant protection). In general, at the FSBSI FSVC, all research is aimed at developing and improving methods in breeding and seed production of vegetable crops, creating new breeding achievements and developing varietal technologies for their cultivation.

Following the publication of this article, the authors noticed that Fig. 5c in the original manuscript is incorrect due to an error in image handling during the creation of the figure. Specifically, the image for the group P3 BMSCs of time point 21d and the image in the group BMMNCs of time point 14d were incorrect. These linked to the group for BMMNCs of time point 21d, which was also, as a result, incorrect. An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper.

The paper is devoted to the problem of plant biodiversity conservation. This problem is acute all over the world. Lower Don Region has a centuries old history of viticulture and winemaking. There are many valuable vine varieties which are worthy of preservation for future generations. Classical methods no longer cope with this task. Applying advances of biotechnology in addition to traditional methods of ex situ and in situ biodiversity conservation allows sustainable management of genetic resources. This article summarizes the study of methods for creation slow growing collection for grapevine variety Fioletoviy Ranniy. Keeping plants in a slow-growing collection is one of the best ways to preserve biodiversity. This study analyzed the effect of various media compounds on vigor of vine in order to elongate the time between replantings.

Abstract The sunflower is a strategically important oil crop. Every year the area under this crop grows, and the rapid returning of sunflowers back to the fields provokes the formation of new more aggressive races of broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.). Broomrape is a parasite that interferes with the normal development of sunflower and can lead to significant crop losses. For creating a sunflower hybrid (F1) it is needed to cross the parental components, which have a complex of important traits, among which there is a resistance to the herbicides and a broomrape. Considering that the creation of each of the components of the hybrid involves many years of painstaking work in the breeding process, modern approaches and methods are used to accelerate the creation of a new source material. Thus, using the technology of cultivating immature embryos in vitro culture, it is possible to reduce the time to create lines resistant to herbicides, for example. And during selection for resistance to pathogenic organisms, testing is most often used against an artificial infectious background, both in the field and in laboratory conditions, in order to differentiate the material on this basis. The aim of this work was to establish the effectiveness system when creating an initial breeding material resistant to herbicides and broomrape. As a result of testing the lines on an artificial infectious background, was identified plants which have high resistance to the G-race broomrape and were isolated from hybrid combinations resistant to tribenuron-methyl and imidazolinones. Thus, among the analyzed plants which are resistant to tribenuron‐methyl, four lines were isolated, which are highly resistant to the G-race broomrape from a hybrid combinations BH0118/SURES–2 (101/1, 101/4, 101/6, 101/7), and BH0318/SURES–2 (101/21, 101/24, 101/28, 101/30), and five lines (101/11, 101/12, 101/16, 101/17, 101/18) from a hybrid combination BH0218/SURES–2. Among imidazolinone-resistant sunflower lines – line 3 was isolated as highly resistant to the G-race broomrape.

The concept of tissue-engineered heart valves offers an alternative to current heart valve replacements that is capable of addressing shortcomings such as life-long administration of anticoagulants, inadequate durability, and inability to grow. Since tissue engineering is a multifaceted area, studies conducted have focused on different aspects such as hemodynamics, cellular interactions and mechanisms, scaffold designs, and mechanical characteristics in the form of both in vitro and in vivo investigations. This review concentrates on the advancements of scaffold materials and manufacturing processes, and on cell–scaffold interactions. Aside from the commonly used materials, polyglycolic acid and polylactic acid, novel polymers such as hydrogels and trimethylene carbonate-based polymers are being developed to simulate the natural mechanical characteristics of heart valves. Electrospinning has been examined as a new manufacturing technique that has the potential to facilitate tissue formation via increased surface area. The type of cells utilized for seeding onto the scaffolds is another factor to take into consideration; currently, stem cells are of great interest because of their potential to differentiate into various types of cells. Although extensive studies have been conducted, the creation of a fully functional heart valve that is clinically applicable still requires further investigation due to the complexity and intricacies of the heart valve.

AbstractThe European Biomedicine Convention was opened for signature in April 1997. It has now been signed by 24 member states of the Council of Europe and ratified by three. To come into force it needs to be ratified by five countries of which four must be member states. Article 18 of the Convention addresses research on embryos in vitro. It forbids the creation of embryos for research and, where the law allows research, requires the adequate protection of the embryo. The term 'adequate protection' is ambiguous and is not defined. Only signatories who have law in force at the time of signature which is not in conformity with the Convention may have a reservation against this article. The creation of embryos for research is still necessary for the advancement of assisted reproduction techniques, for the understanding of human embryological development and for the development of preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Less than half of the countries of the European Union have relevant legislation and there is little consistency of approach. Of the signatories to the Convention, only three have legislation which may permit the creation of embryos for research, only six have any relevant legislation. This begs the question of how assisted reproduction techniques are to advance in those countries which prohibit research, or have signed the convention prior to legislation, without turning infertile couples themselves into the unwitting subjects of research or experimental therapy.
