The effect of severe plastic deformation at ambient temperature on microstructures and mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 2519 was investigated by means of tensile test, micro-hardness test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that tensile strength of as-queched 2519 alloy was greatly enhanced to nearly 550MPa (ultimate tensile strength, UTS) and 520MPa (yield strength, YS) by severe cold rolling or equal channel angular processing (ECAP) while the elongation decreased to 5%. The 2519 alloy could obtain quite well mechanical properties as much as 80 % and 12 passes cold rolling deformation. This indicated that pre-deformation by ECAP is effective in improving the mechanical properties of 2519 alloy by grain refinement, strain aging and high density dislocations.

Specialists of metallurgy and mechanical engineering are intensively working at materials with controlled properties. In fact, at this stage we are already talking about the design of new materials for the specific tasks of the industry. One of the ways to achieve the regulated mechanical properties of metal products is to use the influence of plastic deformation with its different parameters in individual sections of the deformable material. In this study, we studied the effect of cold rolling on the properties of a strip of aluminum alloy EN AW-1050 with artificially created differences in the deformation parameters in different parts of the cross section of the profile. For this, a pre-shaped sample was prepared by conducting joint cold rolling of a strip of the specified material 420 mm long, 180 mm wide and 2.9 mm thick with a steel profiling tape 80 mm wide and 2 mm thick superimposed on it (length of an aluminum strip and steel profiling tape are the same). As a result of joint deformation, the steel strip rolled into the base metal and changed the geometry of the cross section and the properties of the obtained strip. Next, the obtained strip was subjected to heat treatment and rolled in a duo mill. After rolling, thin samples were made from fabricated flat strips to assess mechanical properties, in particular tensile tests were performed according to ISO 6892-1: 2009 and Brinell hardness tests were performed according to ISO 6506-1: 2014. Experimental studies of cold rolling of strips with profiled cross section of aluminum alloy EN AW-1050 were carried out. The possibility of forming heterogeneous properties in a flat aluminum strip by cold plastic deformation is shown and the maximum average values of the increase in the main indicators of mechanical properties on individual elements of the strip are determined. The maximum difference between the mechanical properties of the thick and thin elements of the profiled strip is observed in the hardness index and reaches 37.5%. The maximum obtained average value of the increase in yield strength and tensile strength is 26% and 18%, which is achieved with true deformation of the thick element of the profiled strip 0.165 and 0.234.

Abstract Sever plastic deformation (SPD) with high strain rate can increase the material dislocation density, reduce the grain size and improve the mechanical properties. In this paper, ultrasonic compound cutting (UCC) was proposed to improve the efficiency of preparing ultra-fine grained (UFG) pure copper by sever plastic deformation methods. The motion characteristics and strain rate model of UCC were analyzed, and it was concluded that ultrasonic vibration can increase the strain rate in the primary shear zone. According to the 3D FEM equivalent model of UCC, the UCC and traditional compound cutting (TCC) were compared and analyzed from the perspective of strain rate. The simulation results show that ultrasonic vibration can significantly increase the strain rate of chip. The microstructure and mechanical properties of pure copper chip were studied by using a self-developed machining device. The experiment results show that the grain refinement, dislocation density and micro-hardness of pure copper chip were significantly improved in UCC. When the ultrasonic amplitude is 3 µm, the UCC chip grains are about 2.66 µm and the hardness reaches 124 HV, which is about 8% higher than the hardness of TCC chip. The findings of this research provide an important reference for machining UFG pure copper with enhanced mechanical properties.

Effect of cold rolling prior to ageing on a dispersion of secondary phases and mechanical properties at room temperature for an Al-5.6Cu-0.72Mg-0.5Ag-0.32Mn-0.17Sc-0.12Zr (wt. %) alloy, which was solution treated and water quenched initially, was examined. It was shown that cold working leads to significant increase in density of lattice dislocations that induces the formation discrete agglomerates of the θ′-phase on the {100} planes. Strain of 7% provided increased aspect ratio (length to thickness) of plates that leads to moderate increase of strength. Imposing of higher strains leads to increased lattice dislocation density and the formation of deformation-induced boundaries. Precipitation of the coarse particles of secondary phases on these boundaries takes place. The high yield stress (YS) of 535 MPa and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 570 MPa, were attained after cold rolling with a reduction of 80% followed by ageing at 190°C for 2 h. The effect of plastic deformation prior to ageing on the precipitation behavior and strengthening of Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy is discussed.

Effect of cold plastic deformation prior to ageing at 180°C on a microstructure and mechanical properties at room temperature for an AA2519 alloy was examined subjected to solution treatment and water quenching initially. It was found that cold rolling with a reduction of 15% or equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to a true strain of ~1 leads to acceleration of age-hardening response of this alloy. Peak hardness values of 127, 175 and 169 HV0.2were achieved by ageing following quenching, cold rolling and ECAP, respectively. The highest values of yield stress (YS) of 475 MPa and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 520 MPa, were attained after ECAP followed by ageing. The effect of cold plastic deformation prior to ageing on the precipitation behavior and its relation with mechanical properties of the AA2519 is discussed.
