Objective: To characterize the scientific production on the application of Orem’s self-care theory in the scope of wounds. Method: Integrative literature review with the available articles that highlight the theme. The following informational resources were used: VHL, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane, PubMed and SciELO. The following descriptors were listed: Self Care, Nursing Theory, Wound and Ulcer, in their English and Portuguese versions. The final sample consisted of 10 publications. Data were collected using a validated tool. Evaluation and data synthesis were produced through description and simple statistical evaluations. Results: The analyzed researches were developed in four countries; English language was predominant; publications began in 2004. The theory was applied in nursing care systematization, as a teaching strategy for self-care and as a theoretical framework. The articles linked the theory to diabetic foot, venous ulcer, leg/lower limb ulcers (no specification of type), burns and pressure injury. Conclusion: Orem’s theory was applied to a variety of individuals and contexts, its applicability within the scope of wounds is something concrete, regardless of the type of injury.

Often school-age children are thought of as dependent on their parents and not necessarily involved in behaviors related to their own self-care. It is important to implement and advance self-care performance early in life to promote healthy lifestyles. This review examined the use of Orem's Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory in relation to children's self-care behaviors. This integrative review followed the Whittemore and Knafl guidelines. A systematic search was conducted using the nursing databases. The sixteen study articles were identified for the review, and five themes were identified. Children can develop skills and actively participate in maintaining health and wellbeing. Self-care programs based on Orem's theory are well suited to assist individuals including children to improve self-care skills that lead better self-care practices. Nurses guided by Orem's SCDNT will be well equipped to promote children's knowledge and self-care skills for maintaining health and preventing negative health outcomes.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the psychometric properties of English and Spanish instruments that measure the nutrition behavior and practices of children and their parents. Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory was used in this methodological study. A convenience sample of 333 children and 262 mothers participated from two schools in Washington, D.C. and two schools in Santiago, Chile. Principal component analysis indicated three component per instrument corresponding to Orem’s Theory of operations demonstrating construct validity of the instrument. The study findings showed evidence for validity and reliability of the English and Spanish versions and indicated that the instruments appropriately represented Orem’s operations. The results have implications for the development of health behavior measurement instruments that are valid, reliable, designed for children, culturally appropriate, and efficient. Measuring the nutrition behavior of children and parents is critical for determining the effectiveness of nutrition intervention programs. Furthermore, instruments are needed so that researchers can compare corresponding child and parent behaviors or compare behaviors across cultures.

Abstract Objectives 1. Determine acceptability and feasibility of a phototherapy kiosk designed as a self-care intervention for low vitamin D; 2. Demonstrate that narrow spectrum ultraviolet (UV) B delivered by the kiosk is equivalent to recommended daily D3 supplementation to raise or maintain serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH)D levels at or above 30 ng/mL; and 3. Examine the relationship of demographic variables, including age, gender, body mass index, physical activity, ethnicity, skin type, season, and sun exposure to serum 25(OH)D levels in both treatment arms. Methods Participants were randomized to either the phototherapy kiosk (PK) for a treatment every other week or 600 IU D3 oral supplement (OS) daily, for 10 weeks. PK exposure was based on response to previous treatment and Fitzpatrick Skin Type category; subjects wore undergarments only and eye protection for treatments of 2–6 minutes duration. OS group received a one-time prescription of 70 capsules, dispensed by a research pharmacist. Primary outcome was serum 25(OH)D level. Results Final sample 88 adults; OS group n = 45 and PK group n = 43. Demographics: median age 35 years, mostly female (66%), no difference observed between groups for age, race/ethnicity, or marital status. No difference seen in skin type, birth location, sun exposure, or use of sunscreen. OS group had higher BMI and %body fat. Baseline 25(OH)D level were similar, P = 0.25. At 12 weeks median OS 25(OH)D 25.5 ng/mL and PK 30 ng/mL; P = .01. At 16 weeks, OS group 25(OH)D level 21 ng/mL and PK 27 ng/mL; P = .04. Adherence: OS 92% vs PK 100%. There were no reportable adverse events. Conclusions Use of PK every other week achieved higher serum levels of 25(OH)D than usual care vitamin D3 600 IU/day for 10 weeks, although both groups returned to baseline levels 30 days post-treatment. At a time when self-care measures are highly valued for health promotion, programmed UVB delivered via PK in the community appears to be a safe, efficacious alternative to oral D3 supplementation but requires recurring use. Results from this study suggest a need for early intervention in preventable health conditions impacting Warfighter performance and readiness, particularly pre-deployment when optimizing long-term wellness for duty in austere environments. Method: this is a descriptive, qualitative study of 12 women diagnosed with HPV in two Basic Health Units from September to October 2017. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview containing the guiding questions, and a questionnaire to characterize this woman in relation to age, marital status and educational level. The Data Analysis method of Strauss and Corbin was used to present the results. Results: it was stated that the majority are young, single and have Elementary School. Two categories emerged: 1 - Woman diagnosed with HPV: knowledge about the pathology and the negative feelings experienced after the discovery; 2 - HPV and the woman's self-care. Knowledge about the pathology and the use of condoms as the only form of prevention was identified. Conclusion: there were conditioning factors for the requirements of self-care due to health diversion, with the support-education system as a conduit to strengthen the relationship between nurses and women. This paper tries to explore that, Action Research is a supplementary source for English Language Teachers to bring out better teaching outcome of the teachers and better learning outcomes of the students. In the current scenario, apart from the syllabus, English Language teachers expect a supplementary source to follow a new strategy in order to satisfy the expectations of the students inside the classroom. They face many challenges in the classroom and one of the important problems is to draw continuous involvement of the students as well as to create good understanding of the subject in the classroom. In this connection, Action Research helps the teachers to explore effective teaching strategy in the classroom. This Action Research is integrated with a new approach called MUSE (Manageable, Urgent, Significant and Engaging), that helps the teachers to plan effectively. Besides, it is an exploratory or activity based classroom research and so it encourages the students to learn effectively and understand clearly with more involvement in the classroom. This study suggests a need for the supplementary source and it also focuses on Action Research to aid the teachers.

AbstractObjective: to analyze and summarize knowledge concerning critical components of interventions that have been proposed and implemented by nurses with the aim of optimizing self-care by heart failure patients. Methods: PubMed and CINAHL were the electronic databases used to search full peer-reviewed papers, presenting descriptions of nursing interventions directed to patients or to patients and their families and designed to optimize self-care. Forty-two studies were included in the final sample (n=4,799 patients). Results: this review pointed to a variety and complexity of nursing interventions. As self-care encompasses several behaviors, interventions targeted an average of 3.6 behaviors. Educational/counselling activities were combined or not with cognitive behavioral strategies, but only about half of the studies used a theoretical background to guide interventions. Clinical assessment and management were frequently associated with self-care interventions, which varied in number of sessions (1 to 30); length of follow-up (2 weeks to 12 months) and endpoints. Conclusions: these findings may be useful to inform nurses about further research in self-care interventions in order to propose the comparison of different modalities of intervention, the use of theoretical background and the establishment of endpoints to evaluate their effectiveness.
