The investigation results of surface roughness parameters in billets obtained by the method of additive technology (laser sintering) are presented. There are obtained dependences of roughness parameter Ra upon a surface tilt angle regarding a plane of billet formation and an angle of a surface turn with regard to a cutter motion.

Frequently, on the drawings of mechanical parts, only indications concerning the surface roughness parameter Ra and, relatively rarely, the surface roughness parameter Rz are included. However, the study of the machined surface roughness highlights the necessity to use yet other surface roughness parameters, in order to have a clearer image on the state of the machined surface. Some other surface roughness parameters possible to be used and presenting importance, without the parameters Ra and Rz, were highlighted. One took into consideration the possibility of measuring parameters Rsk and Rmr by means of the available surface roughness testers. Experimental researches of turning by applying the method of full factorial experiment were developed. As input factors in turning process, the cutting speed, the feed rate and the tool nose radius were used. The experimental results were mathematically processed, being determined empirical mathematical models that highlight the influence of certain input factors of turning process on the values of some surface roughness parameters characterized by a more restricted use

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether and to what extent the technological parameters of turning (feed, cutting speed) affect selected surface roughness parameters of aluminum alloy EN-AW 7075 (AlZn5.5MgCu). The principal findings indicate a significant impact of feed and show on the surface roughness and simultaneously show that cutting speed has no effect on the value of surface roughness parameters under investigation. An artificial neural network was employed to evaluate the prediction of surface roughness parameter Rz in turning.

The calculated dependences for determining the surface roughness parameters of a part made by selective laser fusion from materials that are certified and widely used in the aircraft engine industry are presented. A comparison of the values of the height parameters of the roughness obtained by calculation and on the basis of the experiment is presented. On the basis of the presented dependencies, a calculation algorithm is developed, which is the basis of the software for calculating on a computer.

This work deals with the effect of surface roughness parameters on the frictional properties of nanowire-based lubrication systems (NBLS) across Cu surfaces with various topographies. The friction coefficient was discussed in the context of surface roughness parameters including the rms height, inter-island separation and a combined roughness parameter related to the pressure experienced by each nanowire. It was concluded that the rms height of asperity should not be lower than the radius of nanoparticles for effective lubrication. In addition, when the inter-island separation is an integer multiple of the nanowire length, nanowires perform as effective lubricants. Furthermore, the friction coefficient increased when the mean pressure experienced by the nanowires increased. The results obtained in this original study offer some interesting insights into the frictional properties of NBLS as a function of surface roughness parameters. This could lead to a great impact on the selection of nanoparticle-based lubricant aimed at reducing wear and energy losses for various applications.

This article presents selected issues related to the workpiece surface quality after machining by the laser sintering of AlSi10MG alloy powder. The surfaces of the workpiece were prepared and machined by longitudinal turning with tools made of sintered carbides. The occurrence of breaches on the machined material surface was found, which negatively influence the values of 3D surface roughness parameters. The occurring phenomena were analyzed and proposals for their explanation were made. Guidelines for the machining of workpieces achieved by the laser sintering of powders were developed. The lowest value of the 3D roughness parameters was obtained for f = 0.06 mm/rev, ap = 0.5–1.0 mm, and for the nose radius of cutting insert rε = 0.8 mm. The results of research on the effect of cutting parameters on the values of parameters describing the surface quality are presented. Topography measurements and 3D surface roughness parameters are presented, as well as the results of a microscopic 3D surface analysis. Taguchi’s method was used in the research methodology.

A laser polishing method applied on metallic surfaces is presented in this work. One of the most important applications of this technique is the small-medium injection mould polishing manufactured by rapid manufacturing processes (RM) such as selective laser sintering. The polishing method has been applied to different surfaces including a laser-sintered part. Topography and roughness parameters measurements show that laser polishing can achieve surface improvements up to three times in mean roughness parameter with no macro-geometric deviations.
