Surface modified nano-zeolite (SMNZ) was used as carrier to develop nano-zeolite based nano-sulphur fertilizer. A laboratory study on sulphur nano-fertilizer and conventional sulphur fertilizer were studied with percolation reactor system to evaluate the slow release of sulphur from both fertilizers in ambient temperature. SMNZ and sulphur nano-fertilizer were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Zeta Analyzer, Raman Spectroscopy, XRD and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Raman spectroscopy confirmed the sulphur attachment at 480 cm-1 in the SMNZ. The FTIR spectra at 1030 cm-1 confirmed the sulphate attachments in the SMNZ spectrum. Zeta analyzer showed the surface charge of sulphur nano-fertilizer had (-) 52.6 mV. SEM imaged the sulphur loaded SMNZ in irregular flake like structure. A comparative study of the release of sulphate (SO4 2-) from fertilizer-loaded SMNZ and (NH4)2 SO4 fertilizers were performed using the percolation reactor. The results showed that the SO42- supply from fertilizer-loaded SMNZ was available even after 912 h of continuous percolation, whereas SO42- from (NH4)2 SO4 was exhausted within 384 h. These properties suggest that SMNZ has a great potential as the fertilizer carrier for slow release of SO42-.

In this paper, the presence of calcium oxalate on calcareous stone, is studied. The patina consists mainly of calcium oxalate which exists in three forms: monohydrated whewellite (small, smooth, globular yellow-green to brown crystals radial fibrous) (COM), dehydrated weddelite (small crystals, and spherical clusters of plaques consisting of brown or yellow platelets, which are sharp) (COD) and trihydrate caoxite (rarely observed, as mono or dihydrated precursor forms)(COT). Scanning electron microscope with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy are used for characterization. The oxalate films were found to form a thin compact non-porous shell and penetrate deeply in an intergranular position or along microfractures, with effects on longer stability.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared by combining electrospinning with a high-temperature carbonization technique. And a polyphenol biosensor was fabricated by blending the obtained CNFs with laccase and Nafion. Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) were, respectively, employed to investigate the structures and morphologies of the CNFs and of the mixtures. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to study the electrocatalysis of the catechol biosensor. The results indicated that the sensitivity of the biosensor was 41 µA·mM−1, the detection limit was 0.63 µM, the linear range was 1–1310 µM and the response time was within 2 seconds, which excelled most other laccase-based biosensor reported. Furthermore, the biosensor showed good repeatability, reproducibility, stability and tolerance to interferences. This novel biosensor also demonstrated its promising application in detecting catechol in real water samples.

Modification of bioceramics by ion implantation of magnesium ( Mg ) is of interest as Mg is the fourth abundant cation in the human body. In this work, magnesium was ion-implanted into a ZrO 2 based bioceramic stabilized with Y 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3. Both Mg -implanted and unimplanted samples were soaked in a simulated body fluid (SBF) for a period of time. The deposits on the surface of various samples were characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). We find that the Mg -implanted ZrO 2 shows better bioactivity than the plain bioceramic. These results indicate that Mg -implantation can improve the bioactivity of the ZrO 2 based bioceramic. Mechanisms governing the improvement are discussed in this paper.

AbstractStarch is acryloylated and copolymerised without incorporating any vinyl monomer such as acrylic acid or acrylonitrile monomers to produce a superabsorbent copolymer. Fenton’s initiation system was used to produce polyacryloylated starch ester with varying degree of substitution. The copolymer from starch ester exhibited improved solubility, and an impressive water, saline, and solvents uptake. The superabsorbency of the samples is affected by the number of acryloyl groups on starch backbone. The starch ester with degree of substitution 0.8 had the highest water absorbency (102 g/g) in this experiment. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses were used to characterize the products.

The double-layered hydroxide nano-particles compounds with ciprofloxacin drug were carried out by preparation of the double layered hydroxide (DLH) of M+3/M+2 ions for selective ions. The ciprofloxacin drug was inserted between them. The resulted compounds were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy; the antibacterial studied done by using the gram (+) and gram (-) pigments.

 AbstrakAdsorpsi zat warna basic red 18 dan direct black 38 dengan adsorben dari serat pinang telah diteliti. Morfologi dan gugus fungsi permukaan serat pinang dianalisa dengan Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) dan scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Penelitian ini fokus pada mekanisme adsorpsi dan pengaruh dosis adsorben. Koefisien korelasi (R2) dianalisis dengan menggunakan regresi linier. Mekanisme adsorpsi dilakukan dengan menggunakan dua model isoterm, yaitu isoterm Langmuir dan Freundlich. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa model Freundlich adalah yang paling sesuai diaplikasikan untuk adsorpsi zat warna basic red 18 dan direct black 38. Karena model Freundlich mampu menginterpretasikan proses adsorpsi zat warna basic red 18 dan direct black 38 dengan baik, maka sistem adsorpsi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah heterogen. Kapasitas adsorpsi untuk basic red 18 pada berbagai berat adsorben (seperti: 1, 2, dan 3 g) menggunakan model Freundlich adalah 0,234 L/g; 0,101 L/g dan 0,093 L/g.  Sementara kapasitas untuk direct black 38 adalah 0,360 L/g; 0,374 L/g dan 0,141 L/g.

An investigation on modification of natural zeolite with ZnO for the degradation of tartrazine. In this study, ZnO as a semiconductor is modified into a natural zeolite as support to form ZnO/zeolite that can increase the efficiency degradation of tartrazine. Further, the formed catalyst was added to tartrazine by determining the variation in ozonolysis time, the amount of addition of the catalyst, and the addition of a catalyst time. The results of degradation were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 424 nm. The result showed that the percentage of degradation obtained on each catalyst in the degradation. The resulted percent degradation of 20 ml of tartrazine at concentration of 15 mg/L using 20 mg ZnO/zeolite was 56.80%, while using 0.77 mg ZnO was 42.25%, and with the addition of 19.23 mg of Zeolite was 31.18%, all of that condition was proceeded by 40 minutes of ozonolysis. Thus, the result indicates that the ZnO/zeolite catalyst can increase percentages of tartrazine degradation by ozonolysis. It is known that the catalyst ZnO/zeolite is very effective in increasing the degradation of tartrazine. Analysis of tartrazine compounds using fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) after degradation changes in wavenumber indicates that there is a breaking of the bonds of tartrazine compounds. Characterization of ZnO/zeolite catalyst using FTIR, X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), in each spectrum there was no shift, indicating that there is no change in ZnO/zeolite structure

Poliester mempunyai beberapa keunggulan seperti tahan kusut, mudah pemeliharaannya dan relatif awet, namun kurang nyaman dipakai terutama pada kondisi tropis karena daya serapnya rendah dengan moisture regain (MR) 0,4%. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah merubah sifat hidrofob kain poliester menjadi hidrofil untuk meningkatkan daya serapnya. Proses dilakukan dengan cara melapisi selulosa bakterial melalui proses perendaman kain dalam bakteri selulosa (Acetobacter xylinum) dalam medium air kelapa, selama 3 hari, 6 hari, 9 hari dan 12 hari. Selanjutnya dilakukan proses fiksasi dan pemurnian dengan NaOH 3%. Produk yang dihasilkan kemudian dilakukan pencucian berulang dengan mesin lounder O-meter sebanyak 1, 2 dan 3 kali atau setara dengan 5, 10 dan 15 kali pencucian dengan mesin cuci rumah tangga. Dari beberapa pengujian diketahui bahwa semakin lama waktu perendaman, MR dan daya serapnya semakin meningkat, namun kekuatan tarik mengalami sedikit penurunan. Dari analisa morfologi dengan Scanning Electron Microscope terlihat bahwa  dengan perendaman selama 6 hari sudah jelas terlihat lapisan selulosa bakterial yang menyelubungi serat dengan rata yang juga dibuktikan pada serapan gugus fungsinya pada Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) dan hasil pencelupan dengan zat warna reaktif. Kondisi optimum diperoleh pada perendaman 6 hari dan setelah pencucian berulang 2 kali dengan mesin lounder O-meter (setara dengan10 kali pencucian rumah tangga), yaitu MR meningkat dari 0,4 % menjadi 1,02 % dan waktu penyerapan  dari 96,64 detik menjadi 4,22 detik.
