Text data mining and analysis has emerged as a viable research method for scholars, following the growth of mass digitization, digital publishing, and scholarly interest in data re-use. Yet the texts that comprise datasets for analysis are frequently protected by copyright or other intellectual property rights that limit their access and use. This article discusses the role of libraries at the intersection of data mining and intellectual property, asserting that academic libraries are vital partners in enabling scholars to effectively incorporate text data mining into their research. We report on activities leading up to an IMLS-funded National Forum of stakeholders and discuss preliminary findings from a systematic literature review, as well as initial results of interviews with forum stakeholders. Emerging themes suggest the need for a multi-pronged distributed approach that includes a public campaign for building awareness and advocacy, development of best practice guides for library support services and training, and international efforts toward data standardization and copyright harmonization.

Digital watermarking techniques have been developed to protect the copyright of media signals. This chapter aims to provide a universal review and background about the watermarking definition, concept and the main contributions in this field. The chapter starts with a general view of digital data, the Internet and the products of these two, namely, the multimedia and the e-commerce. Then, it provides the reader with some initial background and history of digital watermarking. The chapter presents an extensive and deep literature review of the field of digital watermarking and watermarking algorithms. It also highlights the future prospective of the digital watermarking.

Open innovation has gained popularity in recent years. But is the concept new or does it express old realities? The literature review of this case study found that the term “open innovation” is recent and that its development has been facilitated by technological innovations. The case study collected data over a period of eight months from an agrifood SME in Quebec, Canada. The aim was to go beyond the basic model of open innovation and integrate dynamic, absorptive and appropriative capacities into a new working open innovation model. Initial results show that components associated with the basic open innovation model such as intellectual property, joint R&D and co-product development are present as well as certain organizational capacities. The difficulty of applying the concept is due to its interactions rather than its components taken individually. The study concludes that further work is needed to extend the applicability and the foundations of open innovation.

Despite the fact that Open Innovation (OI) has rapidly become one of the hottest topics in innovation management, comprehensive reviews of the state of the research field and its managerial implications are scarce. This could be one of the reasons why OI still represents a big challenge for innovation managers. This paper, based on a literature review covering the period from 2003 up until June 2009, identifies managerial implications of OI under four major categories: namely organizing for openness, co-creating value, leadership for diversity and intellectual property (IP) management. The contribution of this paper is both practical and theoretical. On the one hand, innovation managers can find useful suggestions for dealing with the challenge of openness in their organization. On the other hand, gaps and omissions in the practical aspects of OI management are identified in order to guide further research on the field.

The amount of patent applications filed each year in the world’s leading patent offices has increasedsignificantly over the past few decades. One of the factors identified as motivating this increase is the government’spolicies to encourage patenting. This paper aims to review some incentive policies adopted around the worldand, mainly, review the history of these policies in Brazil. In this context, the article addressed the Bayh-DoleAct of 1980 in the United States; the reform of Intellectual Property (IP) rights in German Universities in 2002;the financial incentives policy to the national depositor initiated in the 90’s by the Chinese government; and the2004 Innovation Law in Brazil.

This study is intended to determine the cybercrime challenges faced by the fintech industry as well as anticipatory actions in the form of cybersecurity to overcome these challenges. This study employs a systematic literature review method from various articles discussing cybercrime and cybersecurity in fintech that were published in reputable online databases. The findings indicate that cybercrime problems in fintech consist of cybercrime regulations that are not strict, data and information theft, and intellectual property theft in which impacting on the reputation of fintech. Cybersecurity as an attempt to tackle cybercrime in fintech can be performed through proactive action, strengthening regulations, and establishing a reliable cybersecurity framework or procedure. The implications of this research are as an additional reference for academics, practitioners, regulators, and fintech actors related to the fast pace development of cybercrime and cybersecurity in fintech. The limitation of this study is that it only provides an overview and elaborate the results of prior studies instead of provide a further analysis of the relationship between the articles discussed. Recommendations for further research are to increase the scope of the articles studied or apply other literature review methods or conduct empirical research to confirm the results of this study.

Patenting software is a discussion not addressed in scientific academy regarding its context: aligning registers as copyright or as a patent, provoking standardisation and better understandings for improving production chains in economic sectors. This article analyses how patenting software is discussed in a scientific academy, reviewing article profiles in academic productions about this theme. Considering patenting software is an intellectual property, the article restricted the research to only software rights. The systematic literature review methodology was adapted from other authors' analysis process in the information technology areas. The results were shown via quantitative and qualitative study, analysing economic sectors innovation issues, regarding patenting software were discussed.
