Buddhism has a distinctive self-concept. Through Buddhist Song Lyrics, the Venerable Girirakkhito expressly and implicitly gives signs and signifiers to declare and interpret the Buddhist self-concept. This study aims to describe: signature and self-concept found in the song lyrics created by Bhikkhu Girirakkhito in the album Senandung Sanubari as well as interpret the thoughts of the creator of the song in understanding the self-concept. This article is arranged using interpretive methods of language style with semiotic studies based on Saussure, Barthes, and Pierce's theories. Data validity using data source triangulation techniques, and Rahcmat Kriyantono's theory. Technique of data collecting is technique of recalled and recorded with interview (tech skill with informant). The result can be concluded: (1) the self-concept marker in this research is a word, sentence, or verse of the song; (2) the hallmark of the self-concept is the thought of the self-consciousness that undergoes change, unsatisfactory, and without the core of the self; (3) the creator of the song defines itself in the effort of self-awareness toward the ideal self-concept of attaining Buddhahood.

24 prison inmates who participated in a psychotherapy program were compared on a self-concept inventory with 19 inmates who did not participate. Self-esteem was defined in terms of the discrepancy between actual-self and ideal-self measures. The greater the discrepancy, the lower the self-esteem. A significant number of Ss in the therapeutic program showed reduction in the discrepancy score after 1 yr. in the program, while the non-therapy Ss showed a slight, but nonsignificant, increase.

Four self-regard measures referring to specific traits and to over-all self-regard, and four defensiveness measures referring to corresponding dimensions were applied to a male and/or a female sample. Major findings are: (a) A strong self-favorability bias occurred, plausibly indicative of denial influencing the self concept. (b) Personally stated ideal-self ratings (PSI) correlated across Ss with self ratings (SRs), and, to a limited extent, with a rationalization measure, suggesting that PSI has psychodynamic significance. (c) Defense measures having face validity and satisfactory reliability failed to intercorrelate even when purporting to index the same defense regarding the same trait. This suggests that defensiveness is not a unitary construct, and more work on defense measures is needed. (d) High self-regard tended to be associated with less rationalizing and projecting than did low self-regard.

Purpose This research aims to explore the way companies can use social network sites, in particular Facebook, to understand the elements of the actual and ideal-selves of their target market. An important issue is whether the brand’s personality should match consumers’ actual or ideal-self; this complex decision depends on specific characteristics of target markets and products. Design/methodology/approach Photo-elicitation and in-depth interviews were carried out and applied to 15 interviewees. This exploratory phase seeks to broaden the understanding of the phenomenon clarifying important concepts through the users’ rich descriptions and explanations. A primary exploratory qualitative research is conducted, as there is only little information available to answer the research question. Secondary data have also been used to support or contrast the findings with those made by other authors Findings The results indicate that Facebook users construct their virtual identity with elements from both the actual and the ideal-self, although they predominantly stress those aspects, which make them look more socially desirable. Each Facebook feature is used with different intentions, and that is why different elements of the self can be extracted from each. Practical implications Companies can enhance emotional connections with consumers by applying “self-congruence”, which refers to the correspondence between the consumer’s self-concept and the brand’s personality. Originality/value To analyse the empirical findings, the paper draws on the self-concept, brand personality and self-congruence theory. More particularly, on Facebook representations and its relationship with the way people think about them and the manner in which they are expressed.

Abstract The present study investigated incarceration as a possible triggering factor of self-concept transformations. Self-concept consists of a set of multiple dimensions organized hierarchically functioning as cognitive schemas. It is a structural complex product of reflective activity, and it is susceptible to changes as the individual encounters new situations, life transitions, and social roles. To investigate the transformations in the self-concept structure, 150 incarcerated women responded to the Feminine Inventory of the Self-Concept's Gender Schemas, Self-Concept Clarity Scale and Situational Self-Awareness Scale. The results showed dynamic and multidimensional organization of self-concept in the women investigated, including various categories of the self. The elements analyzed indicate that prison, an undesirable life event in adulthood, is a driver of transformations in the dynamics of self-concept.

The monograph presents the generalized results of the author's scientific activity related to the diagnosis and phenomenological description of the state of self-consciousness and the Self-concept of persons with developmental disorders, in particular with mild mental retardation. The variants of self-awareness diagnostics and a comprehensive assessment of the personal adaptive potential of subjects of different ages with intellectual disabilities are presented and methodologically justified. The presented methods allow us to form an individual adaptive profile based on a quantitative assessment of qualitative indicators of adaptability/maladaptivity. The content aspects of the formation of the antisocial potential of a person with mild mental retardation, in particular, the problems of suggestibility, indoctrination and the participation of persons with intellectual disabilities in criminal communities, are separately identified. It will be useful for students, postgraduates, researchers and practitioners in the field of pedagogy, psychology, law.

AbstractBody experience can be seen as the basis for the formation of the self-concept. The relation between body experience and self-concept is fundamental for human existence and is especially in focus in the fields of psychotherapy (Gendlin, 1981) and movement activities (Stelter, 1996, 1998). But body experience is a "data source" which is difficult to handle scientifically. Body experiences are based on "internal physical sensations" - which Gendlin also describes as the felt meaning or the felt sense, and is not in opposition to phenomenology. To bridge the gap between internal sensations - which are the foundation of the creation of meaning - and language as the medium in both everyday and scientific communication, a form of visualisation technique is introduced to help to evoke descriptions and metaphors that are able to transform body experiences as the pre-reflective mode of information into language as the digital mode of information. Metaphors are the source domain for the target domain body experience (see: Lakoff, 1987). Through the presentation of an empirical project in the field of movement and sport, the theoretical reflections on the process of transforming body experience into language will be exemplified.

One of the most psychic elements plays a role in the development
of individual personality is the self concept, which is an overall self-concept
self image that includes a person’s perception of himself, feelings, beliefs,
and values associated with him. The self concept is an important aspect in a
person, in which the self concept is a frame of reference to interact with the
environment. When people perceive themselves, give meaning and shape
abstraction assessment of him means he showed self-awareness and the ability
to get out of myself to see him as he did to the world outside himself.
The process of development of self-concept often experience problems when
should collide with the physical and psychological conditions that do not
support. This is as it occurs in the disability children. Barriers that often arise
in the process of development for disability children often result in low quality
of their self-concept. Negative self-concept in disability children are often
influenced by various factors such as the refusal of parents, teachers, friends
and society. Then the required education and put more stress on approaches
that are emotional in educational services for disability children that can be
played by educators, psychologists, and community that contribute to the
formation of a positive self-concept. The success of disability children in the
form of positive self concept will bring opportunities for disability children to
be more independent and confident that they are capable of self-actualization
is better in their lives.
