Young children often struggle to accomplish goals without instructions or reminders from adults. Less-structured activities might facilitate children’s emerging self-directed executive functioning, by giving children opportunities to choose what to do and when, and to practice setting and accomplishing goals. In one study, 6-year-old children who spent more time in less-structured activities showed better self-directed switching on a verbal fluency task; conversely, more time in adult-structured activities predicted worse switching (Barker et al., 2014). However, it is unclear from such correlational studies whether children’s activities caused differences in executive functioning, as opposed to differences in executive functioning shaping how children spent time, or a third factor driving both. The current study thus investigated relationships between children’s experiences and self-directed executive function in a genetically-informative longitudinal twin sample (N= 936; 472 female, 464 male) . Twins who lived in more structured homes and participated in more structured activities at ages 3 and 4 showed worse self-directed switching on a verbal fluency task at age 7, controlling for earlier performance and concurrent levels of environmental structure. These relationships persisted controlling for general cognitive ability, vocabulary knowledge, and socioeconomic status. Associations between early time use and self-directed switching were mediated by nonshared environmental rather than genetic factors. These findings are consistent with early structured time causally affecting later self-directed executive function.

Abstract Verbal fluency tasks have been identified as important indicators of executive functioning impairment in patients with frontal lobe dysfunction. Although the usual evaluation of this ability considers phonologic and semantic criteria, there is some evidence that fluency of verbs would be more sensitive in disclosing frontostriatal physiopathology since frontal regions primarily mediate retrieval of verbs. Huntington's disease usually affects these circuitries. Objective: To compare three types of verbal fluency task in the assessment of frontal-striatal dysfunction in HD subjects. Methods: We studied 26 Huntington's disease subjects, divided into two subgroups: mild (11) and moderate (15) along with 26 normal volunteers matched for age, gender and schooling, for three types of verbal fluency: phonologic fluency (F-A-S), semantic fluency and fluency of verbs. Results: Huntington's disease subjects showed a significant reduction in the number of words correctly generated in the three tasks when compared to the normal group. Both controls and Huntington's disease subjects showed a similar pattern of decreasing task performance with the greatest number of words being generated by semantic elicitation followed by verbs and lastly phonologic criteria. We did not find greater production of verbs compared with F-A-S and semantic conditions. Moreover, the fluency of verbs distinguished only the moderate group from controls. Conclusion: Our results indicated that phonologic and semantic fluency can be used to evaluate executive functioning, proving more sensitive than verb fluency. However, it is important to point out that the diverse presentations of Huntington's disease means that an extended sample is necessary for more consistent analysis of this issue.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with postural instability and gait disorder phenotype (PIGD) are at high risk of cognitive deficits compared to those with tremor dominant phenotype (TD). Alterations of white matter (WM) integrity can occur in patients with normal cognitive functions (PD-N). However, the alterations of WM integrity related to cognitive functions in PD-N, especially in these two motor phenotypes, remain unclear. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive neuroimaging method to evaluate WM properties and by applying DTI tractography, one can identify WM tracts connecting functional regions. Here, we 1) compared the executive function (EF) in PIGD phenotype with normal cognitive functions (PIGD-N) and TD phenotype with normal cognitive functions (TD-N) phenotypes; 2) used DTI tractography to evaluated differences in WM alterations between these two phenotypes within a task-based functional network; and 3) examined the WM integrity alterations related to EF in a whole brain network for PD-N patients regardless of phenotypes. Thirty-four idiopathic PD-N patients were classified into two groups based on phenotypes: TD-N and PIGD-N, using an algorithm based on UPDRS part III. Neuropsychological tests were used to evaluate patients' EF, including the Trail making test part A and B, the Stroop color naming, the Stroop word naming, the Stroop color-word interference task, as well as the FAS verbal fluency task and the animal category fluency tasks. DTI measures were calculated among WM regions associated with the verbal fluency network defined from previous task fMRI studies, and compared between PIGD-N and TD-N groups. In addition, the relationship of DTI measures and verbal fluency scores were evaluated for our full cohort of PD-N patients within the whole brain network. These values were also correlated with the scores of the FAS verbal fluency task. Only the FAS verbal fluency test showed significant group differences, having lower scores in PIGD-N when compared to TD-N phenotype (p < 0.05). Compared to the TD-N, PIGD-N group exhibited significantly higher MD and RD in the tracts connecting the left superior temporal gyrus and left insula, and those connecting the right pars opercularis and right insula. Moreover, compared to TD-N, PIGD-N group had significantly higher RD in the tracts connecting right pars opercularis and right pars triangularis, and the tracts connecting right inferior temporal gyrus and right middle temporal gyrus. For the entire PD-N cohort, FAS verbal fluency scores positively correlated with MD in the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF). This study confirmed that PIGD-N phenotype has more deficits in verbal fluency task than TD-N phenotype. Additionally, our findings suggest: (1) PIGD-N shows more microstructural changes related to FAS verbal fluency task when compared to TD-N phenotype; (2) SLF plays an important role in FAS verbal fluency task in PD-N patients regardless of motor phenotypes.

We compared the performance of 31 non-demented Parkinson´s disease (PD) patients to 61 healthy controls in an action verbal fluency task. Semantic and phonemic fluencies, cognitive impairment and behavioural dysfunction were also assessed. The mean disease duration of PD was 9.8 years (standard deviation (SD) = 6.13). There were no age (U = 899.5, p = 0.616), gender(chi-square = 0.00, p = 1.00) or literacy (U = 956, p = 0.96) differences between the two groups. A significant difference was observed between the two groups in the action verbal fluency task (U = 406.5, p < 0.01) that was not found in the other fluency tasks. The education level was the only biographical variable that influenced the action (verb) fluency outcomes, irrespective of disease duration. Our findings suggest a correlation between the disease mechanisms in PD and a specific verb deficit, support the validity of the action (verb) fluency as an executive function measure and suggest that this task provides unique information not captured with traditional executive function tasks.

There is a general agreement that speaking requires attention at least for conceptual and lexical processes of utterance production. However, conflicting results have been obtained with dual-task paradigms using either repetition tasks or more generally tasks involving limited loading of lexical selection. This study aimed to investigate whether post-lexical processes recruit attentional resources. We used a new dual-task paradigm in a set of experiments where a continuous verbal production task involved either high or low demand on lexical selection processes. Experiment 1 evaluates lexical and post-lexical processes with a semantic verbal fluency task, whereas experiments 2 and 3 focus on post-lexical processes with a non-propositional speech task. In each experiment, two types of non-verbal secondary tasks were used: processing speed (simple manual reaction times) or inhibition (Go/No-go). In Experiment 1, a dual-task cost was observed on the semantic verbal fluency task and each non-verbal task. In Experiment 2, a dual-task cost appeared on the non-verbal tasks but not on the speech task. The same paradigm was used with older adults (Experiment 3), as increased effort in post-lexical processes has been associated with ageing. For older adults, a dual-task cost was also observed on the non-propositional verbal task when speech was produced with the inhibition non-verbal task. The results suggest an attentional cost on post-lexical processes and strategic effects in the resolution of the dual-task.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes loss of automaticity and impairment in dual task (DT) performance. AIM: To investigate the performance and pattern of prioritization of individuals with PD in motor and cognitive DT. METHOD: An observational, transversal, comparative study assessed 20 individuals with PD between stages 1.5 to 3 of the modified Hoehn and Yahr scale. Performance was assessed during the execution of manual dexterity and sit-to-stand tasks, in a single task or in association with a verbal fluency task. RESULTS: There was a loss of performance in both dual task conditions. The cost of verbal fluency was higher than the cost of manual dexterity function. CONCLUSION: Individuals with PD showed worse DT performance and prioritized the manual dexterity task. There was no prioritization between sit-to-stand and verbal fluency. These findings suggest that the nature of tasks can influence the prioritization of dual tasks.

Action (verb) fluency is a newly developed verbal fluency task that requires the examinee to rapidly generate as many verbs (i.e., “things that people do”) as possible within 1 min. Existing literature indicates that action fluency may be more sensitive to frontal–basal ganglia loop pathophysiology than traditional noun fluency tasks (e.g., animal fluency), which is consistent with the hypothesized neural dissociation between noun and verb retrieval. In the current study, a series of analyses were undertaken to examine the psychometric properties of action fluency in a sample of 174 younger healthy participants. The first set of analyses describes the development of demographically adjusted normative data for action fluency. Next, a group of hypothesis-driven correlational analyses reveals significant associations between action fluency and putative tests of executive functions, verbal working memory, verbal fluency, and information processing speed, but not between action fluency and tests of learning or constructional praxis. The final set of analyses demonstrates the test–retest stability of the action fluency test and provides standards for determining statistically reliable changes in performance. In sum, this study enhances the potential clinical applicability of action fluency by providing demographically adjusted normative data and demonstrating evidence for its reliability and construct validity. The bilingual advantage is a heavily debated topic in research on bilingualism. The current study further investigated one specific aspect of bilingualism proposed to be a determining factor for the bilingual advantage, namely language switching behaviour. We investigated whether a bilingual advantage can be detected in the executive functions of inhibition and shifting by comparing monolingual and bilingual participants on a Simon task and a colour–shape switching task. Furthermore, we examined the relation between these executive functions and language switching proficiency, as measured by a semantic verbal fluency task. In addition, the current study set out to investigate the convergence of self-reported language switching estimates and actual language switching proficiency. Results revealed a bilingual advantage for shifting, but not for inhibition. However, this bilingual advantage for shifting was not related to language switching behaviour. Additionally, we were unable to identify a relation between objective and subjective measures of switching abilities. These findings seem to confirm the existence of a bilingual advantage, but also once again validate its elusiveness, as demonstrated by the absence of bilingual benefits on our measure of inhibition. It furthermore questions the validity of switching measures employed in previous studies.
