Introduction: Maxillofacial injuries are one of the most common injuries seen in trauma patients. Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the most common cause of maxillofacial injuries all over the world. RTA are supposed to decrease due to lockdown which has become a usual phenomenon during the COVID- 19 pandemic. Changes in the etiology of maxillofacial injuries are supposed to dictate their pattern as well. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the pattern of maxillofacial injuries during the COVID-19 Pandemic at Birat Medical College and Teaching Hospital. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the patients attending Birat Medical College and Teaching Hospital for the treatment of maxillofacial injuries from 1 May to 31 July 2020. Consecutive sampling was used to collect data from 52 study participants. Results: A total of 52 patients with maxillofacial injuries were studied. The age of patients ranged from 1 year to 73 years with a median age of 26 years. There were 69.2% (n=36) males with a male to female ratio of 2.25:1. The most common etiology was Road Traffic Accidents (50%, n=26). Laceration (70.7%, n=29) was the most common soft tissue injury. Parasymphysis fracture (23.8%, n=5) was the most common site of mandible fracture. The most common midface fracture was the zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture (40.9%, n=9). Conclusion: RTA still remains the most common etiology of maxillofacial injuries in spite of COVID-19 and the pattern of maxillofacial injuries has not changed much either.

Background: Road traffic accidents are the major public health problem. The objective of the study was to analyze road traffic accidents presenting in Kathmandu Medical College Emergency Department.Methods: The data from all consecutive road traffic accident cases brought to Emergency Department Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital were collected from 2018 Jan-2018 June. Factors like age of the patients, time of the accident, influence of illicit substances and type of injury were documented.Results: Males (74) were common victims than the females (26). Eldest patient was 65 years of the age while youngest patient was 4 years. Most common type of injury was fracture in male 28 (37%)and laceration in females8 (38%). Alcohol intoxication was evident by positive alcohol smell test in 10 (13.6%) males and 6(23%) females. Conclusions: Road traffic accidents are major health concern in Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital and preventive measures should be considered to reduce such health burden. Accidents are not due to external factors all the time but often they occur due to failure of control of self-conscience and free thoughts. Road Traffic Accidents is still the major cause of death worldwide including India. A retrospective study has been conducted in Dr. S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur (Raj.), in the year 2019 to study the pattern and distribution of Head Injuries of fatal road traffic accidents and to prepare the demographic profile of it. Out of total 901 cases, male to female ratio was 9:1, and commonest age group affected was 21-30 years (39.8%). Among total victims, Hindus were 748 (83%) and rests were Muslims 103 (11.4%) and other religions. Head injury was the most common injury, present alone in 509 cases (56.4%) and in 392 (43.6) cases along with other injuries. Skull fractures were found in 451 (50.5), in which linear/fissure fracture (32.9%) was most common. Most common bone fractured was temporal bone. The commonest variety of intracranial hemorrhage was subdural hemorrhage and craniotomy was done in 29 (3.2%) cases. Keywords: Accidents, Road traffic, Head injury, Fractures.

The specter of road traffic injuries takes a greater toll on human life every dayon our roads. Objectives: To analyze the demographic and injury profile of autopsy caseswith an alleged history of RTA (Road traffic accidents). Design: Retrospective study. Setting:Forensic Medicine Department of Nishtar Medical College, Multan. Period: January 2010 toDecember 2013. Material and Methods: 116 autopsy cases with an alleged history of RTA.Data collected pertaining to history, epidemiology, details of injuries and cause of death etc.was statistically analyzed on SPSS version17. Results: Out of 116 autopsies on RTA victims,46.55% victims were between 21-40 years with male: female ratio of 1.9:1. Maximum numberof accidents occurred during day time between 6 am and 5:59 pm (62.06%). 79.31% died atthe site of accidents. Pedestrians were the commonest victims (81.89%). Four wheelers causedmost of RTA 51(43.96%). The cause of death was opined to be head injury in 45.68% of cases.Conclusion: Addressing road safety in a comprehensive manner necessitates the involvementof multiple sectors, such as health, transport and police.

BACKGROUND Road traffic accidents (RTA) account for most of the injury patients encountered in the department of emergency resulting in significant death and morbidity. The current research was conducted to analyse the demographic, clinical and radiological profile of patients presenting with RTA to a tertiary care teaching hospital (Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute). METHODS This cross-sectional observational study was done among 68 subjects presenting with RTA to the department of emergency medicine. Detailed history taking, clinical & radiological investigations including plain radiographs, ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) were done. Site of injury was considered as primary outcome of the study. The data was analysed statistically by deriving mean and standard deviation. International Business Machines Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS) version 22 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Among the study population, the mean age was 36.18 ± 13.73 years. 83.82 % were males. Individuals aged less than 40 years of age were greatly involved in RTA. Majority (77.9 %) had abdominal injuries followed by 36.7 % with craniofacial trauma, 25 % had thoracic trauma, 17.6 % had spinal trauma, and 10.2 % had extremity and pelvic bone injuries. In abdominal trauma, spleen (26.4 %) was the commonly affected organ. Liver (25 %) and renal injuries (16.17 %) were next commonly observed. A significant difference (P-value < 0.05) was found in abdominal injuries due to different types of vehicles. CONCLUSIONS RTIs are common in the younger population. The predominance of the male population was seen. The most common organ to be injured was spleen. Proper understanding of the pattern of trauma may help in improving the outcome. Early diagnosis, aggressive resuscitation and timely surgical intervention were essential in improving the outcome in trauma patients. Background: Mandibular fracture is one of the most common fractures of the maxillofacial region. The pattern of mandibular fractures varies from country to country and these variations can be due to social, cultural, and environmental factors. Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the etiology, incidence and pattern of mandibular fractures in western region of Nepal, reported at Nepalgunj Medical College Teaching Hospital.Methodology: A prospective study of 130 patients with mandibular  fractures  was  conducted  in  Department  of  Dentistry,  Nepalgunj  Medical  College  Teaching  Hospital  from  November  2013  to November 2014. These patients were examined both using clinical and radiographic parameters for mandibular fracture. Data concerning age, gender, causes of fracture and sites of fracture were analyzed.Result: Out of 130 patients, 104(80%) were male patients and 26(20%) were female patients. Most common age group was between 21-30 years. Most common cause of mandibular fracture was road traffic accidents accounting for 66(50.77%) cases followed by fall injury in 30(23.08%) cases. Most common site involved was parasymphysis 46(30.47%) followed by angle 27(17.89%).  Road traffic  accidents due to alcohol  consumption 40(68.97%) was the leading cause followed by assault 10(17.24%) and fall 8(13.79%).Conclusion: Mandibular fractures are more frequent  in  male  than  female  with  higher  frequency  in  21-30  years  age  group.  The most commonly fractured site was the parasymphysis. Road traffic accidents were the most common etiology and significantly associated with alcoholism. JNGMC Vol. 13 No. 2 December 2015

This study was conducted at the M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, between October 2007 and September 2009 to analyse the age and sex distribution of unnatural deaths in children, patterns and manner of death. Detailed information regarding the circumstances of death was sought from the relatives, friends and police. The scene of occurrence was visited, and photographs of the scene of occurrence were examined in relevant cases. Unnatural deaths in children constituted 6.62% of the total autopsies conducted. The majority of childhood deaths were in the age group of 15–18 years of both sexes constituting 46.88%. Males constituted 55.22% of cases. Suicide accounted for 40.63% of the cases. Most children committed suicide by hanging (82.05%). The main reason was academic failure and some of the cases were accidental (48.96%). Road traffic accidents accounted for 26.04% of the cases, where most children were pedestrians (56%). Drowning accounted for 15.63% of the cases. Most of the children drowned while playing near ponds (83.33%). Homicide accounted for 9.36% of the cases – either killed by their mother as part of a pedicide–suicide event or by the father, and in two cases the children were sexually abused before being killed.

Road traffic accidents in Bangladesh have been rapidly increasing with huge mortality through road accidents each year. There are many causes of road accidents in recent years; one important cause is running of locally made improvised three wheelers (flat bed tricycle) in the urban areas and also on the highways, popularly known as 'Nasimon' and 'Karimon'. This prospective study was carried out in Faridpur Medical College Hospital from January through June 2011, to study the accident patients caused by 'Nasimon' and 'Karimon'. Fifty six (12%) patients were of RTA by 'Nasimon' and 'Karimon' out of a total of 468 patients admitted into our hospital during this period. Most patients (41, 73.21%) were male, highest accidents (24, 42.86%) were observed among 21-30 years age group and most victims (33, 58.93%) were belonged to low socioeconomic status. Commonest (31, 55.36%) victims were passengers of 'Nasimon' and 'Karimon' while maximum number of accidents (46, 82.14%) took place in the urban areas and on the highways. Injury pattern of victims were similar to that found in any other road accident patients. These three wheelers 'Nasimon' and 'Karimon' are run in violating of Bangladesh Motor Vehicles Act (1983) as they are totally unfit for plying on the highways. Strict surveillance against these illegal and risky vehicles on the highways and in the urban areas by law enforcing agencies is required as a measure to reduce the burden of road accidents in our country.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/fmcj.v7i1.10289Faridpur Med.
