Dentistry, the field of medicine where the communication sets standards for success. A continuous patient and dentist as well multidisciplinary dental communication leads to accuracy in diagnosis, increased efficiency as well as better patient satisfaction and long term positive outcomes. However the COVID-19 has brought a hindrance in the regular dental practice. The dental work demands a close proximity between the dentists with the patient which pitches them at a higher risk of being affected by the virus. Hence, international as well as national policy making associations and organizations have suggested only emergency and minimal aerosols generating treatment procedures. The dentists have almost been in hibernation, along with the waves of the pandemic and the constant lockdowns, carrying out free consultations for regular patients of their practices, through the phone and even chats. Can this be an opportunity to include tele-communication tools in routine dental practice?

This article presents a long-term explanation of port evolution in Africa. It focuses on the economic, political and social characteristics that influenced the development of maritime infrastructures and their interaction with inland transport systems. This article demonstrates how seaport evolution in Africa has been heavily affected by path-dependence patterns. In addition, this study provides evidence of the insertion of the African economy into the waves of globalization through the modernization of seaports and the necessary institutional and technological flexibility.

We present the first assessment of atmospheric pollution by mercury (Hg) in an industrialized area located in the Ossola Valley (Italian Central Alps), in close proximity to the Toce River. The study area suffers from a level of Hg contamination due to a Hg cell chlor-alkali plant operating from 1915 to the end of 2017. We measured gaseous elemental Hg (GEM) levels by means of a portable Hg analyzer during car surveys between autumn 2018 and summer 2020. Moreover, we assessed the long-term dispersion pattern of atmospheric Hg by analyzing the total Hg concentration in samples of lichens collected in the Ossola Valley. High values of GEM concentrations (1112 ng m−3) up to three orders of magnitude higher than the typical terrestrial background concentration in the northern hemisphere were measured in the proximity of the chlor-alkali plant. Hg concentrations in lichens ranged from 142 ng g−1 at sampling sites located north of the chlor-alkali plant to 624 ng g−1 in lichens collected south of the chlor-alkali plant. A north-south gradient of Hg accumulation in lichens along the Ossola Valley channel was observed, highlighting that the area located south of the chlor-alkali plant is more exposed to the dispersion of Hg emitted into the atmosphere from the industrial site. Long-term studies on Hg emission and dispersion in the Ossola Valley are needed to better assess potential impact on ecosystems and human health.

Abstract Direct hepatic veins-to-hemiazygos connection offers the balanced distribution of hepatic venous blood to both lungs, not requiring anticoagulation. We report a 13-year follow-up after this type of off-pump Fontan completion. Patient’s hepatic veins-to-hemiazygos confluence increased with growth to allow for unobstructed flow. This unique technique can be recommended in heterotaxy patients, if atrial hepatic venous drainage and hemiazygos vein are in close proximity.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the structure of the economic space of the Russian Arctic within the framework of determining the prospects for the economic development of the Arctic regions. The unevenness of the economic space of the Russian Arctic and the focus on the extraction and export of natural resources are determined. It is revealed that vertically integrated structures play a key role in the Russian Arctic. It is determined that the specific feature of this region is the ethnoeconomics, the long-term development of which is the dominant direction of the national policy in the field of agriculture of the Russian Arctic.

Eight cats with stable impaction fractures of the maxilla, sufficient to cause malocclusion, were treated by mandibular symphyseal realignment. The mandibular symphyseal realignment allowed occlusion to be restored with a minimal amount of dental work (e.g., enameloplasty, endodontics, or tooth extraction) in a majority of the cases. Enameloplasties were performed in two cats, one of which had a vital pulpotomy. Tooth extractions (range, two to five teeth; mean, 3.3 teeth) were performed in four cats. All cats were doing well at the time of in-hospital follow-up at one month to four years (mean, 2.1 yrs) postoperatively. Further telephone follow-up was obtained, from 1.5 to five years (mean, 3.4 yrs) after surgery, from all but one owner, with no change from the in-hospital evaluations. All owners contacted were pleased with the long-term outcome.

This paper presents a numerical study of seakeeping in regular waves for two vessels in close proximity using commercial seakeeping software HydroStar and an in-house code MOTSIM. The objective was to study the possible sheltering effect of the larger vessel (FPSO) on the smaller one (OSV) during personnel transfer between the two vessels, where one vessel was at some angle relative to the other vessel and there was no connection line between them. The study mainly focused on the OSV motion resulting from the interaction of the FPSO when the OSV was at different headings and wave directions. Initially the OSV motions close to the FPSO (and parallel) were compared with those for the OSV alone. For an un-parallel position of the two vessels, an objective function based on the OSV RAOs motion in roll, pitch and heave directions was used to optimize the OSV position. Finally comparisons between HydroStar and MOTSIM results are provided. The main conclusions are: 1) When the FPSO and OSV are located in parallel, the OSV motions in sway, roll and yaw are larger than the single OSV motions in head waves while surge, heave and pitch are almost the same. The OSV motions in most of the six degrees of freedom are smaller than the single OSV motions when the waves are from other directions (always on the port side of the FPSO), which means that there is a sheltering effect. 2) The simulation results from different OSV rotation angles show that the hydrodynamic interaction between the FPSO and OSV e.g. the sheltering effect is related to the OSV angle and the wave heading. The objective function in roll, pitch and heave RAOs indicates that the OSV should maintain a close to parallel position with the FPSO to minimize motion when the waves come from the port side of the FPSO from 180 to 240 degrees. When the wave direction is around 240 degrees the OSV should have relatively small motion in waves for any OSV rotation angle. 3) A comparison of HydroStar and MOTSIM results shows that the MOTSIM results of a single vessel seakeeping simulation is in a good agreement with HydroStar. In two vessels situation more validation work needs to be done.

Abstract Persons living with a recent diagnosis of dementia experience great uncertainty and stress as they and their families try to adjust to the new reality of their lives and futures. One fruitful strategy for intervening with these families is to include both the person living with dementia and their family care partner in the program. Although dyadic approaches are rare among early-stage programs, promising examples exist. The SHARE Program (Support, Health, Activities, Resources, and Education) is one exception where dyadic materials address: 1) current and long- term needs of care partners, and 2) how the family can develop a realistic plan of care based on their care values and preferences. This symposium describes the development and positive outcomes of the original SHARE intervention and the promising adaptations that expand how and to whom the intervention is delivered. Presentations explore: 1) the original SHARE for Dementia program and strategies for expanding its reach into chronic conditions populations (Orsulic-Jeras & Whitlatch), 2) a group version translated into Spanish (“EPIC: Early-stage Partners in Care,” Dr. Coon), and 3) the development of a remote needs assessment and unobtrusive in-home monitoring technology platform that guides care planning and helps to maintain independence (“SHARE-sense,” Dr. Miller). Discussion will focus on the challenges, unique solutions, and positive outcomes when adapting SHARE to different settings and populations (Dr. Zarit).

Some gut microbes have cospeciated with hominids, but whether they further codiversified with human populations is unclear. Here, we identify predominant gut microbial species sharing a parallel evolutionary history with human populations. Patterns of strain transfer between populations are generally consistent with an African origin, and suggest long-term vertical transmission over thousands of generations. We show the same strains also faithfully transmit between mothers and their children. Consistent with the development of intimate symbiosis, species with strongest patterns of codiversification have the smallest genomes. This study reveals long-term fidelity of gut microbiota with human populations through transmission among individuals living in close proximity. Dominance of specific strains in different populations is based in part on vertical transmission and they may provide population-specific health benefits.

Abstract A case report of post-traumatic exogenous endophthalmitis caused by Nocardia farcinica, including treatment procedures, microbiology examination, and systemic medications. A 23-year-old male suffered a penetrating corneal injury that was treated with sutures. The sutures were individually removed during the 4th and 5th months after surgery. On the thirteenth day after the final suture was removed, an anterior uveitis developed and progressed to whitish, plump, nodular, and tufted exudates within the anterior chamber over the next 10 days; this led to an indication for intraocular surgery. Anterior chamber lavage and resection of solid fibrinous exudates (using a vitrectomy knife) for a complete microbiological examination were performed. Nocardia farcinica was identified. Systemic medications were chosen according to sensitivity, and a fixed combination of sulfamethoxazole 400 mg/trimethoprim 80 mg was administered long-term (months). After a complicated course, the final visual acuity was 0.5. In this case, accurate, early detection of an atypical infectious agent and determination of its sensitivity to antibiotic treatment enabled effective treatment that achieved the best functional and anatomical results under the circumstances.
