Introduction: Wavefront sensing technology has emerged as a means to advance our understanding of high-order aberrations of the human eye. Purpose: To evaluate the differences in ocular high-order aberrations between males and females and the distribution of high-order aberrations in males and females. Subjects and methods: 3,597 eyes (1,029 female and 2,568 male) of 1,874 patients who obtained wavefront measurements performed using the VISX Wavescan device were included in this study. Mean RMS (root mean square) values of high-order aberrations (HOAs) and the mean of each Zernike polynomial from the second to the sixth order were calculated from multiple scans of each eye. Analysis was performed to assess the association between HOAs and gender, and symmetry of HOAs between eyes in both males and females. Results: Overall HOA did not differ significantly between males and females (p= 0.93). Overall HOA did not differ between left eyes (p=0.852) or right eyes (p=0.76). Individual Zernike polynomials did reveal a significant difference between male and female eyes: Z14 (Tetrafoil x, p=.036); Z16 (Secondary Trefoil y, p=0.015); Z24 (Secondary Spherical, p=0.003); Z25 (Tertiary Astigmatism x, p=0.010); and Z26 (Secondary Tetrafoil x, p=0.004). Conclusion: Overall HOA does not differ between the genders; however, individual HOA Zernike terms do demonstrate statistically significant differences between males and females. This is the first such study to describe these differences. The clinical significance of these differences has yet to be determined. Introduction: The pituitary gland is the master gland of the body. It’s size varies with age and gender. MRI is the safest and effective diagnostic tool for pituitary gland examination. Objectives: This study was aim to determine the anteroposterior, height and transverse dimensions of normal  pituitary gland in different age groups of both sex with MRI. Methodology: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study. It consisted of 567 images of individuals (242 males and 325 females) of various age from 20 to 70 years from the Department of Radio- diagnosis, Dhulikhel Hospital. Results: The mean anteroposterior, height and transverse dimension of pituitary gland is 9.74±1.18 mm, 5.95±1.11 mm and 11.65±2.15 mm respectively in which females have higher value. Independent sample t test showed highly significant differences (p< 0.05) between the mean anteroposterior dimension in males and females. The present study showed the mean value of anteroposterior dimension is maximum at age group 50-59.  The mean value of height, transverse dimension and volume of males and females is maximum at 20-29 age group and minimum at 70-79 age group. One way ANOVA shows that there is significant difference between in height, transverse dimension and volume at different age group (p< 0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that the height and volume of pituitary gland is maximum at second decade of life then it gradually decreases with age. The mean value of anteroposterior, height and transverse dimension showed greater value of females than males.

SummaryThe plasma tissue factor (TF) concentration was correlated to factor VII concentration (FVIIag) and factor VII activity (FVIIc) in 498 healthy volunteers ranging in age from 17 to 64 years. Immunoassays using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were developed for the determination of TF and FVIIag in plasma. The mAbs and the test systems were characterized. The mean value of the TF concentration was 172 ± 135 pg/ml. TF showed no age- and gender-related differences. For the total population, FVIIc, determined by a clotting test, was 110 ± 15% and the factor VIlag was 0.77 ± 0.19 μg/ml. FVII activity was significantly increased with age, whereas the concentration demonstrated no correlation to age in this population. FVII concentration is highly correlated with the activity as measured by clotting assay using rabbit thromboplastin. The ratio between FVIIc and FVIIag was not age-dependent, but demonstrated a significant difference between men and women. Between TF and FVII we could not detect a correlation.

SummaryAlthough factor V Leiden (FVL) is a major determinant of thrombotic risk, the reason why less than 10% of carriers eventually develop venous thromboembolic (VTE) events is unknown. Recent observations suggest that circulating levels of microparticles (MP) may contribute to the thrombogenic profile of FVL carriers. We measured the plasma level of annexin V-MP (AMP) platelet-MP (PMP), endothelial-MP (EMP), leukocyte-MP (LMP) and tissue factor-bearing MP (TF+MP), and the MP procoagulant activity (PPL) in 142 carriers of FVL (of these 30 homozygous and 49 with prior VTE), and in 142 age and gender-matched healthy individuals. The mean (± SD) level of AMP was 2,802 ± 853 MP/ μl in carriers and 1,682 ± 897 in controls (p<0.0001). A statistically significant difference between homozygous and heterozygous carriers of FVL was seen in the level of PMP, EMP and LMP, but not in that of the remaining parameters. When the analysis was confined to carriers with and without a VTE history, the mean level of AMP was 3,110 ± 791 MP/ μl in the former, and 2,615 ± 839 MP/μl in the latter (p<0.005). The mean level of all subtypes of circulating MP showed a similar pattern. The PPL clotting time was 39 ± 9 seconds (sec) in carriers, and 52 ± 15 sec in controls (p=0.003); and was 35 ± 8 sec in carriers with prior thrombosis, and 41 ± 10 sec in thrombosis-free carriers (p<0.005). Our study results suggest that circulating MP may contribute to the development of thrombosis in carriers of FVL mutation.

Objectives: Seizure is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the world; it affects all age groups with equal possibility of occurrence in both males and females. Many antiepileptic drugs are available today, but its diagnosis is challenging. The present study attempted to see if seizure activities could be predicted by analyzing the pre-seizure electrical activities. The prediction may help in taking preventive measures appropriately beforehand in the individuals with seizure proneness. Material and Methods: We selected 11 generalized seizure patients and 19 control patients out of total 115 patients referred for electro-diagnostics for various reasons. EEG of the subjects recorded, segmented as per protocol, and analyzed using MATLAB and EEGLAB tools. Results: The mean energy level in alpha and beta band of the study subject was significantly lower (P = 0.04 and 0.004, respectively) as compared to the age matched control subjects. Theta and delta bands did not show any significant difference between the groups. The difference between the pre- and post-electrical seizure energy and entropy was statistically insignificant. Conclusion: The study shows that the energy level remains low in the seizure patients in the alpha and beta bands. This further goes down when electrophysiological seizure activities starts. The randomness or entropy does not alter significantly among the seizure subjects in comparison to non-seizure subjects.

Obtaining good scores in IELTS has become a concern for many foreign language learners throughout the world. Therefore, any relevant research to pave the way of applicants' achievement may be considered significant. This study deals with an indispensable element of IELTS writing tasks as teaching cohesive devices and it verifies the effect on writing performance of IELTS task 2. To this end, 30 participants at intermediate level took an IELTS test writing task 2 as the pretest. Then, they went under a 10 session treatment program to learn cohesive devices. At the end, they took a parallel form of IELTS task 2. The scores were obtained. The inter-rater reliability was met. The results of the paired Samples T-test showed that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of pre and post- tests of the participants after being exposed to cohesive devices treatment.

AimsIn this study, we tested the hypothesis that intraocular pressure (IOP) parameters measured by dynamic contour tonometry (DCT) would be more relevant in progression of glaucoma when there is a history of laser refractive surgery (LRS) than the IOP parameters measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) or calculated by correction formulae.MethodsNinety-eight eyes in 54 patients with open-angle glaucoma and a history of LRS were included in this retrospective study. IOP was measured by both GAT and DCT during follow-up. Baseline, mean, and peak IOP, IOP fluctuation, and IOP reduction were measured by each tonometry method. Corrected IOP parameters using central corneal thickness and mean keratometry values were also analysed. Clustered logistic regression was used to identify variables correlated with progression of glaucoma. Areas under the curve (AUCs) for correlated variables were also compared.ResultsThe mean DCT value (OR 1.36, p=0.024), peak DCT value (OR 1.19, p=0.02) and pattern SD (OR 1.10, p=0.016) were significant risk factors for progression. There was a significant difference in the predictive ability of the mean DCT and GAT values (AUC 0.63 and 0.514, respectively; p=0.01) and of the peak DCT and GAT values (0.646 and 0.503, respectively, p=0.009). The AUCs for corrected IOP did not exceed those of DCT.ConclusionsIOP measurements were more associated with progression of glaucoma when measurements were obtained by DCT than by GAT or correction formulae in eyes with a history of LRS.

This research aims to examine adolescents’ world assumptions, personal attributes and gender roles. The research has attempted to examine the thoughts of adolescents about the world and the ways in which they define themselves as a man or a woman by considering the fact that their lives are affected not only by "traumatic" events but also by several family and environmental dynamics affecting their quality of life. Data was obtained from randomly selected 407 high school students from Kadıköy district in Istanbul province, by applying “World Assumptions Scale (WAS)”, “Extended Personal Attributes Questionnaire (EPAQ)”, “Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS)”, and “Data Collection Form”. Our results showed that there was a significant difference in the scales and sub-dimensions used in the research with respect to gender, grade, family characteristics as well as life standards, balance of standards, adequacy of/change in family income, living with the family without problems, level of satisfaction with the environment, and the desire to change the living environment. In addition to a positive relationship between world assumptions and personal attributes, various correlations in different directions were also found between the sub-dimensions of the scales. Our research has shown that adolescents’ life dynamics can make a difference in their perception of the world and their assumptions about perceiving themselves as moral and valuable individuals, as well as their personal attributes and perceptions about gender roles.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The bacterium Helicobacter pylori is strongly associated with the development of gastric adenocarcinoma. Currently, the prevalence in developed countries is 40%, but this value increases considerably in developing countries, which can reach rates bigger than 90%. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the mean and annual prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients from Itajaí during the period from July 1992 to April 2016, as well as the gender and age groups most affected. METHODS: After consent of the clinical director of the Gastroclinica Itajaí and confidentiality commitment about the research, the database of the Endoscopy Service of the clinic was evaluated. All the patients who underwent their first upper digestive endoscopy with urease test and/or histological analysis were included. The data were submitted to statistical analysis of prevalence by gender, age group and years of study, with subsequent correction through the confidence interval. RESULTS: The mean prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection thru all years of study was 50.07%. With the calculation of the annual prevalences, it was evident the gradual reduction of infection in the population of Itajaí, that was 81.3% in 1992, declining to 33% in the year of 2016. When classifying the prevalence of infection by gender, it was higher in males (53.59%), and gender distribution by age group showed no statistically significant difference among genders between the ages of 40 and 80 years. In relation to the age group, the highest prevalence was in the group between 40 and 49 years. CONCLUSION: Although this study is retrospective and based on endoscopic database analysis, without access to clinical data of patients such as prior use of proton pump inhibitor and antibiotics to endoscopy, its results are important because they may reflect the current panorama of Helicobacter pylori infection in the city under study, where it has been presenting a gradual reduction of prevalence over the years, with current rates similar to that of developed countries (33%). Future studies are needed to confirm our data.

Abstract Introduction With regular and long-term exercises, the heart undergoes changes that are called the adaptation of the heart in response to exercise or physiological changes, which contrasts with the pathological changes caused by hypertension and aortic valve stenosis. However, the exact effects of exercise on the structure and function of the heart depend on the type, intensity and duration of exercise, the amount of physical fitness, inheritance, and gender. Materials and Methods In this prospective clinical trial study, 40 subjects, including 20 in the endurance exercise group and 20 in the exercise group, were evaluated. Echocardiography was performed for all of these subjects before and after the exercises that was performed professionally for 8 weeks under the supervision of the trainer and the changes were recorded. The data were analyzed statistically by SPSS20 software. A significant level of 0.05 was considered. Results The mean ± standard deviation of the age was 20/80 ± 1/42 years. Significant decrease in mean RVSM was observed only in the strength group (P = 0.008). There was no significant difference in the endurance group . There was no significant difference between the two groups before the test in the mean TAPSE (P = 0.46). The mean of TAPSE in the endurance group was 0.22 ± 1.99 and in the strength group was 0.31 ± 1.95. There was no significant difference between the two groups (P 0.46). There was no significant difference between the two groups before the test in the mean E / e (P = 0.51). The mean E / e "in the endurance group was 0.47 ± 4.75 and in the strength group was 0.54 ± 5.50, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P &lt;0.001). The mean SWDT in the endurance group was 0.12 ± 0.95 and in the strength group was 0.11 ± 1.06, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.002). There was a significant increase in mean SWDT in the strength group after the test (P &lt;0.001) .There was a significant increase in mean PAP in the strength group (P = 0.007) . There was a significant increase in mean LV mass index in the strength group (P &lt;0.001),with no significant difference between the two groups in mean FAC. Conclusion It seems that any kind of strength and endurance exercise affects the performance status, however, strength exercises have more effects which causes RV dysfunction. All indexes measured changed within normal level except for PAP that had abnormal changes after endurance exercise .

Objective: Fiji is a Pacific nation with roughly equal numbers of indigenous Fijians and Indians. Previous studies, using police and medical records, have suggested significant racial, regional, age and gender differences in suicidal behaviour. The objective of the present study is to use a unique data set (autopsy reports) in the evaluation of earlier reports and to identify groups at greater risk. Method: Hanging and poisoning autopsy reports from two distinct regions were examined. Results: The rate of autopsy (per 100 000 population per year) among Indians (19.5) is significantly greater (p<0.0001) than among Fijians (1.53). In the north, among the Indians, there are more autopsies in females (21.2) than males (16.8), and hanging constitutes 85% of total suicides, while in the Central and Eastern Divisions hanging constitutes only 58% of the total. These are regional influences. Among Fijians, the rates of hanging autopsy are significantly greater (p<0.001) in males (1.98) than females (0.40); however, among Indians there is no significant difference. This is a racial difference. Hanging remains the preferred option for all groups. The mean age at autopsy is 31.7. There is no significant difference between the mean ages of the races, the sexes or the regions. There is no significant difference between the mean age of poisoning (31.5) and hanging (31.8). Conclusion: There is a significant racial difference in rates of suicide but the influences of region, age and method are relatively slight.
