The sex ratio, Gonado Somatic Index and fecundity of the Copper Mahseer, Neolissochilus hexagonolepis were investigated. The sex ratio was 1:1.2 (Male to female). The gonado-somatic index ranged from 0.084 % to 16.47 % for female fish and 0.086% to 5.81 % for male fish. The highest mean GSI 9.037 % was recorded in July for female fishes and the highest 2.838 % was recorded in September for male fishes.  The total weight and total length of the fishes had strong positive correlation. Also, the correlation between the weight of gonad and GSI was positively correlated.  Absolute fecundity ranged from to 11424. Fecundity had strong positive correlation with total length (r = 0.98), total weight (r= 0.9) and total length (r= 0.88).

Some aspects of the reproductive biology viz. sex-ratio gonadal length index (G.L.I.), gonado somatic index (G.S.I.) and sex-ratio of Cirrhina reba were studied during September 2004 to July 2005. In present study the highest values of GLI (33.76) and GSI (0.63) were in the month of July. Total length (TL) and gonadal length (GL), total weight (TW) and gonadal weight ( GW ), standard length (SL) and gonadal length ( GL ) and gonadal weight relationships were found to be positive; and the relationships were: GL = -3.873 + 0.219 TL (r = 0.992), GW = 0.01511+0.000815 TL (r = 0.979), GL = -2.6030+0.253 SL (r = 0.990), GL = 0.01997+0.000938 SL (r= 0.976), GW = 13.2952+0.6064 TW (r = 0.958), GW = 0.0772+0.00233 TW (r = 0.979). The sex- ratio of C. reba were 1:1.62 for male and female respectively. Foi realizado o estudo do comprimento total, peso total e peso das gônadas; dos índices gonadais e do fator de condição (K), em relação à variação da densidade populacional em três diferentes tratamentos do experimento com Trichogaster trichopterus e, além dos estudos citados, também foi realizada no experimento com Hemichromis bimaculatus, a análise dos estádios de maturação gonadal encontrados, em relação à quantidade de alimento ofertado em quatro diferentes tratamentos. O estudo do fator de condição em relação à quantidade de alimento ofertado em três diferentes tratamentos dos experimentos com Hyphessobrycon callistus e Trichogaster trichopterus também foi realizado. O comprimento total, peso total e peso das gônadas revelaram a tendência de serem inversamente proporcionais à densidade populacional. Porém o comprimento total e o peso total, de H. bimaculatus, revelaram a tendência de serem diretamente proporcionais à quantidade de alimento ofertado. Tanto o índice gonadal como o índice gônado-somático foram mais elevados no tratamento de densidade populacional intermediária, em T. trichopterus. Os menores valores destes índices, em H. bimaculatus, foram registrados no tratamento 3 e os maiores valores nos tratamentos 1 e 2, respectivamente. Em T. trichopterus, experimento quanto à variação da densidade populacional, observaram-se valores muito semelhantes do fator de condição entre os tratamentos 1 e 2. O maior e o menor valor do fator de condição em H. bimaculatus foram observados nos tratamentos 1 e 4, respectivamente. Em H. callistus, o maior e o menor valor do fator de condição foram encontrados, respectivamente, nos tratamentos de maior oferta alimentar e de oferta alimentar intermediária. Em T. trichopterus, o fator de condição revelou a tendência de ser diretamente proporcional à quantidade de alimento ofertado. A espécie H. bimaculatus não evidenciou apresentar tendência à correlação positiva entre maturação gonadal e quantidade de alimento ofertado. Abstract Studies on the Trichogaster trichopterus gonadal development in regard to the variation of the population density were carried out. The following parameters were studied: the total length, total weight and gonads weight; the gonads indexes and the condition factor (K). In the experiment with Hemichromis bimaculatus was concomitantly analysed the maturity stages of the gonads in relation to the quantity of nourishment offered. The nourishment influence in the condition factor (K) of Hyphessobrycon callistus and Trichogaster trichopterus has been analysed. The total length, total weight and gonads weight were estimated to be inversely proportional to the population density. However, the total length and total weight in H. bimaculatus were estimated to be directly proportional to the amount of nourishment offered. The gonadal index and the gonadosomatic index were higher in the treatment of the intermediate population density, in T. trichopterus. The smallest values of these gonads indexes, in H. bimaculatus, were recorded in treatment 3 and the biggest values in treatment 1 and 2, respectively. In T. trichopterus, an experiment about the variation of the population density, similar values were observed between treatment 1 and 2, in relation to the conditional factor. The biggest and smallest values about the conditional factor, in H. bimaculatus, were observed in treatment 1 and 4, respectively. In H. callistus, the highest and the lowest values of the conditional factor were observed, respectively, in the treatment of the highest level of nourishment offered and in the treatment of the intermediate nourishment offered. In T. trichopterus, the conditional factor tended to be directly proportional to the amount of nourishment offered. In the species H. bimaculatus the tendency on the positive correlation between gonadal maturation and amount of nourishment offered is not evident.

Wedge clam, Donax scortum occurrence was studied from February 2009 to January 2010 in Padukere sandy beach, Karnataka (India). The following biological parameters were measured in 2367 individuals of the wedge clam, Donax scortum: length, breadth, width, total weight, shell weight, wet meat weight, dry meat weight and number of clams. The calculated linear equation of length-breadth and length-width relationships were B = 3.5968 + 0.5421L and W = 0.8191 + 0.4345L respectively. The length-total weight, length-wet meat weight, length-dry meat weight and length-shell weight relationships were 0.0001414L3.0224, W = 0.0000037L3.5204, W = 0.0000011L3.4513 and 0.0000852L2.9912 respectively. The values of correlation coefficient for different shell dimensional relationships were very close to unity. It was clear from the study that the most ideal period for clam harvest was April, June and December, especially when condition index was maximum. Length showed a strong correlation with silt and clay. Dry meat weight was negatively correlated with air temperature. Shell weight showed positive correlation with length, breadth, width and dry meat weight, and abiotic parameters, silt and clay. Condition index was positively correlated with electrical conductivity, whereas it was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen. It showed a strong positive correlation with salinity. Seasonal fluctuation of condition index in D. scortum was probably related to reproductive activity. The harvesting of wedge clam could be carried out considering the maximum sustainable yield without over-exploitation

AbstractEuropean chub Leuciscus cephalus collected from five localities in the lowland and subalpine regions of Austria were analysed for oestrogenic effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals and the presence of the plerocercoid of the tapeworm Ligula intestinalis. Of 1494 chub analysed, only seven (six males, one female) were found to be infected with single, but large plerocercoids up to 15 cm in length. Ligula-infected fish showed comparatively immature gonads, as demonstrated by the gonadosomatic index and gamete developmental stages. Plasma levels of the egg precursor protein vitellogenin also showed concentrations ranging below the detection limit. The present results indicate that chub infected with L. intestinalis and exposed to exogenous oestrogenic compounds can result in reduced gonadal maturation and produce false oestrogen-positive diagnoses in male fish. For plasma vitellogenin levels, L. intestinalis infections can result in false oestrogen-negative diagnoses in male and female fish.

The study was conducted for a period of twelve months from January to December 2006 to determine the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and fecundity of Mystus gulio. Total 370 of Mystus gulio were examined during the study period. The sex ratio (male:female) of the investigated fish was 1:1.22 and generally female was larger than male. The fish was found to have a wide spawning season (March to November) with a single spawning peak in July as indicated by the gonadosomatic index and ova diameter. Fecundity of the fish was ranged from 3,891 to 1,68,358 with an average of 32,909.49 during the period of study and was found to increase with the increase of body length and weight. The relationships between fecundity and total-length, body-weight, gonad-length and gonad-weight were found linear and statistically highly significant (p<0.05).DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v19i2.16957 Progress. The minimum and maximum standard length of females caught was 8.0cm (14.5g body weight) and 14.6cm (53.4g body weight) respectively while the males were 10.1cm (19.8g) and 17.1cm (68.6g). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) for females ranged between 6.55 and 25.57 while males ranged between 5.68 and 16.55. Significant (P<0.05) relationships were observed between standard length, body weight, gonad weight and fecundity. There was significant (P<0.05) relationship between body weight and fecundity. Body weight and GSI had no significant (P>0.05) relationship with condition factor in C. nigrodigitatus in Yewa Lagoon. The condition factor (K) ranged between 1.58 and 2.92 for the females while males ranged between 1.08 and 2.79. The condition of female fish was slightly better than that of male fish of the same length.

This study was conducted to evaluate some aspects of the reproductive biology of the African Bonytongue Heterotis niloticus from the Great Kwa River, Cross River State Nigeria with the view to encourage conservation and rational measures for sustainable management of the species. A total of 62 matured H. niloticus were sampled and their gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), condition factor, fecundity and egg diameter (mm) were studied in other to determine the spawning season of the fish. Gonadosomatic index and hepatosomatic index showed an inverse relationship during spawning seasons. Total length (TL-cm) ranged between 47.1 cm – 76.2 cm and total weight (TW – g) ranged between 4300g - 1169g with sex ratio of 1:1.2 (male: female) revealing a dominant female population. Fecundity ranged from 511 oocytes (48.4cm TL; 1.69 kg wt, 5.9g gonad weight) to 7822 oocytes (69.3cm TL, 3.11kg wt. 14.9g gonad weight). The regression equation derived from the scattered diagram in the relationship between fecundity and total weight, total length gonadosomatic index and length-weight is; F= 6.6231TW0.837, R2= 0.2456; F= 5.1112TL1.6367,  R2= 0.1606; F= 10680GSI0.9276, R2= 0.6567; TW= 0.4072TL2.0987, R2= 0.7533, the relationship were significant (p < 0.05). Fecundity and ovary weight relationship showed a positive correlation coefficient of 1. The highest egg diameter (0.92±0.01) was recorded in May and other months with corresponding high gonadosomatic index performance to confirm spawning period. In view to encourage conservation by investigating measures for sustainable management of the species, this study observed that H. niloticus spawns throughout the year. Ikot, N. Marosatherina ladigesi is one of endemic fishes in South Sulawesi and also as ornamental fish. Anthropogenic activities such as destructive fishing and degradation caused by the dredging of sand carried M. ladigesi to the red list of threatened IUCN category as vulnerable species. Accordingly, conservation efforts are needed to maintenance fish population in its habitat. The biologic information for conservation is reproduction of fishes. This research aimed to described reproduction of Celebes rainbow fish including sex ratio, gonad maturity, gonado-somatic index, fecundity, and distribution of egg diameter in Pattunuang and Batu Puteh Rivers, South Sulawesi. This research was conducted from May 2018 to April 2019. The result showed that the sex ratio in Pattunuang and Batu Puteh rivers were 1,00:1,60 and 1,00:1,08, respectively. This species spawned from the end of dry season to the early rainy season. Fecundity of fish in Pattunuang and Batu Puteh rivers were 22-795 eggs and 69-571 eggs, respectively. Based on distribution of egg diameter, Celebes rainbowfish categorized as total spawner. For the conservation of this species is recommended to catch restrictions in the spawning season and for male fish, and needs to be proposed the conservation in situ to determine both of rivers as reservoir area because these habitats are a source of germplasm.

A total of 1183 Botia Dario (Hamilton) samples were collected from Rajshahi (Shaheb Bazar, Binodpur Bazar, Talaimari Bazar, Kazla Bazar and Godagari) during the period from January, 2002 to August, 2003 to study the fecundity, sex-ratio, relationship between fecundity and total length, standard length, body weight, ovary length as well as ovary weight. The mean fecundity was calculated as 31833.50±10313.42 with a range of 5245 to 53754 in fishes ranging in total length from 96 mm to 135 mm (mean 115.50±12.11 mm) and in body weight from 14.51 g to 43.29 g (mean 29.71±6.91 g). The relationship between the fecundity (F) and total length (TL), standard length (SL), body weight (BW), ovary length (OL) and ovary weight (OW) were found to be linear with the ‘r’ values 0.94, 0.94, 0.95, 0.92 and 0.98, respectively. The ovum diameter ranged from 0.3 to 0.72 mm and the mean diameter was calculated as 0.518±0.06 mm. The male to female ratio was 1:0.61. Key words: Botia dario, fecundity, sex-ratio. Univ. j. zool. Abstract Catfish are an important component of demersal fisheries in the Persian Gulf. This study describes reproductive aspects in the four common species of catfish, namely Netuma thalassina (Rüppell, 1837), Netuma bilineata (Valenciennes, 1840), Plicofollis dussumieri (Valenciennes, 1840), and Plicofollis layardi (Günther, 1866) collected from coastal areas of the Persian Gulf during spring and winter 2017. A total of 495 fishes were collected, including 151 N. thalassina, 12 N. bilineata, 212 P. dussumieri, and 120 P. layardi. The four species showed significant differences in total length as a measure of body size. Total length of these four species also differed significantly between the four seasons and between the sexes. Three species, i.e., N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, and P. layardi showed an overall female-biased sex ratio, while the sex ratio of N. bilineata did not differ from the expected equal proportions. The patterns of gonad development, gonadosomatic index, and hepatosomatic index of the four species showed that the breeding season of N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, and P. layardi was probably during winter. N. bilineata showed a different pattern; its breeding season is therefore expected to be spring. The size at first maturity of N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, N. bilineata, and P. layardi, was 44.99, 30.55, 29.60, and 27.01 cm, respectively. This study provides essential information for correct management during the reproductive cycle to maintain a healthy stock of these fishes.
