This paper introduces the tonal system of the amagaun dialect of Nubri. We first present an introduction to linguistic tone, with a focus on tone as it is found in Tibetan languages, before moving on to describe the tones in Samagaun Nubri monosyllables and disyllabic expressions. We conclude that the tonal system in Nubri cannot be accounted for by exclusive reference to Tibetan languages. The implication is that contact with a non-Tibetan language has played a significant role in the history of the language.

The paper written in the light of 125th birth anniversary of L. Trotsky analyzes the life and ideas of one of the most prominent figures in the Russian history of the 20th century. He was one of the leaders of the Russian revolution in its Bolshevik period, worked with V. Lenin and played a significant role in the Civil War. Rejected by the party bureaucracy L. Trotsky led uncompromising struggle against Stalinism, defending his own understanding of the revolutionary ideals. The authors try to explain these events in historical perspective, avoiding biases of both Stalinism and anticommunism.

Contributions to the History of the Society of Friends of the Polish LanguageTowarzystwo Miłośników Języka Polskiego (‘Society of Friends of the Polish Language’) is the oldest such society and greatly distinguished for the popularization of knowledge about the language, and also for the knowledge about Polish itself. The few publications devoted to it, written mostly on the occasion of anniversaries, tend to overlook the figure of Andrzej Gawroński (1885–1927), an outstanding expert in Sanskrit, a linguist, and a professor of the Lviv University, despite the fact that archive materials show that he played a very significant role in the creation of the Society, and even penned the preliminary version of its charter. This paper presents Gawroński’s part in the forming of TMJP; it is based on extant letters from A. Gawroński to Kazimierz Nitsch from years 1919–1921 (Archive of Science of PAN and PAU in Cracow), letters from K. Nitsch to linguists Henryk Ułaszyn and Antonina Obrębska-Jabłońska, and also on the few printed materials from years 1918–1927.

First in a series of chapters devoted to the religious-political context of Naṣīḥat al-mulūk, this chapter explores the confessional composition of the Samanid domains and the varied discourses related to religious cultures and the communities associated with them. Noting the region’s history of religious multiplicity, the chapter traces the inclusive approach to religious diversity evident in tenth-century encyclopaedic writings, as well as the contemporaneous production of a literature of refutation, directed against Muslim and non-Muslim groups. His mentality shaped by these factors, Pseudo-Māwardī emphasises the king’s need to develop skill in religious argumentation, particularly against heretics, whom he depicts as agents of political as well as religious dissent. After discussing paradigms of heterodoxy, the chapter ends with an account of the Ismāʿīlī mission active in the Samanid domains and its success in winning the support of the Amir Naṣr b. Aḥmad, during whose reign Naṣīḥat al-mulūk is likely to have been written, and whose conversion to Ismāʿīlism perhaps played a significant role in occasioning its composition.

In the twelfth century the Spiro site emerged as a substantial northern Caddoan ritual center. The Craig Mound at Spiro reveals a long history of ritual regalia inputs from the east, especially the Mississippian urban center at Cahokia. The ritual paraphernalia indicate that the Cahokian belief system played a significant role in the religious activities associated with the great mortuary and later with the spirit lodge. Inalienable goods that reached Spiro include copper plates, flint clay sculptures, shell cups and gorgets, and symbolic weaponry. The contemporaneity of Cahokia and Spiro suggests an intrinsic ritual connection and sustained interaction over several centuries through the agency of ritual sodalities and social houses.

AbstractThe International Review of the Red Cross (formerly the Bulletin Internationale des Sociétés de Secours aux Militaires Blessés) is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, making it the oldest of the general publications produced by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Originally created as a communication tool for the entire International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the Review rapidly changed its course to become first the primary mouthpiece of the ICRC for many years, and finally an academic journal. This article will retrace the history of this evolution, during which, under cover of humanitarianism, political factors played a significant role.

The qipao ceased to be worn for everyday occasions afer the 1950s in the PRC and the late 1960s in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. But it has powerfully re-emerged in the last few years. This is puzzling considering the swiftness and broad scale of the re-emergence, and the qipao's recent history of being marginalized. Are the political and cultural elites responsible and what motivated them? Besides political and cultural nationalism, are there other reasons that have led a large number of people to resume wearing the qipao? This study finds that the state did not play a significant role in the qipao's re-emergence, that cultural producers and celebrities contributed much to it, and that the symbolic meanings of the modern historical qipao have been repackaged and now cater to a variety of consumers for very different reasons.

The chariot wheel carrying the red Machhindranath from Kamarukamaksha is considered to be the ancestor of Lalit Jyapu. However, in Machhindranath's procession, it is customary for the Tandukars to be the first to start the procession by pulling a chariot. They seem to be attracted to classical music because of their culture and music. As a result, they have succeeded in maintaining a dignified family. According to the information received from Virbhimsen Tandukar. From the study of five to six generations up to Narayan Prasad Tandukar, it is understood that Tandukar has contributed not only in the country but also abroad. Even today, materials that have been scientifically and systematically analyzed on the contribution of this family have not been available. There seems to be no in-depth study and research on this subject. This is the biggest problem of this region. This article titled Tandukar Gharana and Nepali Classical Music has been prepared with the main objective of studying the area, identifying it and addressing the problems.]

The author of the article assumes that the interstate relations between Russia and Great Britain in the late 18th — early 19th centuries largely determined the area of private contacts between Russians and the British. English-Russian marriages have a special place in the history of English-Russian relations. Attention is paid to one of such unions — the marriage of the outstanding statesman M. M. Speransky with an Englishwoman Elizabeth Stephens. It is claimed that a significant role in Speransky’s fate was played by A. A. Samborsky, also married to an Englishwoman, in whose house Speransky’s fateful meeting with his future wife took place. It is reported that the Speransky Fund of the Russian national library preserved letters of Elizabeth Stephens to Speransky, previously not widely attracted by researchers, but not all of these letters actually belong to Elizabeth, some of them belong to her sister — Marianne. This study provides the first translation of these letters for the analysis of Speransky’s private life. The author concludes that the preserved correspondence meets the standards and methods of expression of feelings in the era of “sentimentalism.” The problem of how much Speransky was immersed in the cultural context of British reality due to this marriage is also considered. Despite the fact that the marriage was quite short, Speransky’s relations with the Stephens family were quite strong.
