Vietnam is one of the world’s largest annual anise harvest countries. However, products from anise are mainly in the form of dried anise fruit and crude star anise essential oil with low economic value. The main component of the star anise essential oil is trans-anethole which needs to be purified to produce higher-value products. This study focused on building an experimental system for purifying star anise essential oil by a batch distillation column working at vacuum pressure. The products obtained during the purification process were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Analytical results were used to evaluate the ability to separate volatile impurities in the crude star anise essential oil. Results showed that the bottom temperature of the tower below 150oC, corresponding to a vacuum pressure of less than 0.1 bar, can reduce the thermal decomposition of essential oils. The volatile components, such as α-pinene, β-phellandrene, limonene, and linalool, were thoroughly separated at the top of the tower. The purified star anise essential oil was from the bottom of the distillation and had the anethole composition of over 88% of mass fraction (wt.%). Anethole recovery efficiency was 98.5 and 88.8% at a pressure of 0.1 and 0.08 bar, respectively. The bottom product can have a higher anethole composition if increasing the column height, the reflux ratio, and decreasing the pressure and the quality of impurities removed at the top is increased.The experimental results are helpful for the calculation, design, manufacture, and operation of an industrial-scale essential oil purification system.

Rhododendron anthopogon D. Don., a small compact Himalayan shrub growing in Nepal, is a known medicinal plant used to treat sore throat, colds, blood disorders, bone disease, potato allergies, and vomiting, and to relieve liver disorders, headaches and back pain. The present study investigated the chemical composition and bioactivities of the leaf essential oil from R. anthopogon from Dhankuta, Nepal. The essential oil from leaves was obtained by hydrodistillation and a detailed chemical analysis was conducted by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The enantiomeric distribution of monoterpenoid components was determined using chiral gas chromatography and represents the first chiral examination of R. anthopogon essential oil. The essential oil was screened for antimicrobial activity using the microbroth dilution test, and for cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and 5637 using the MTT assay. A total of 70 volatile components were identified from the essential oil. The major components were α-pinene (21.5%), δ-cadinene (13.8%), β-pinene (9.5%), limonene (5.9%), δ-amorphene (4.6%), α-muurolene (4.5%), and ( E)-caryophyllene (3.2%) with other minor constituents (< 3%). The essential oil showed marginal antibacterial and cytotoxic activities, but no antifungal effects.

Essential oil of Chinese medicinal herb,Chenopodium ambrosioidesaerial parts was found to possess nematicidal activity against the root-knot nematodes,Meloidogyne incognita. The essential oil ofC. ambrosioideswas obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 27 components of the essential oil were identified. The principal compounds inC. ambrosioidesessential oil were (Z)-ascaridole (27.27%),ρ-cymene (19.05%), isoascaridole (14.75%),α-pinene (6.33%) andα-terpinene (5.12%). Bioactivity-guided chromatographic separation of the essential oil on repeated silica gel columns led to isolate three volatile components ((Z)-ascaridole,ρ-cymene and isoascaridole) from the essential oil. The essential oil and (Z)-ascaridole exhibited strong nematicidal activity againstM. incognitawith LC50values of 49.55 μg/mL and 32.79 μg/mL, respectively.ρ-Cymene and isoascaridole also possessed nematicidal activity againstM. incognitawith LC50values of 435.89 μg/mL and 1323.51 μg/mL, respectively but weaker than the crude essential oil.

Abstract Foeniculum vulgare Mill. is a medicinal plant, used as a flavouring agent. The essential oil from F. vulgare has potential antimicrobial and insecticidal effects, and can be used in food industry in order to protect the food resources and food products against microbial and pest’s contamination. The aim of the research was to characterize the volatile components of F. vulgare essential oil by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and Gas Chromatography (GC-FID) and to observe the antimicrobial activity by disk diffusion method and in vapour phase. Also, insecticidal activity of the vapour phase of the essential oil of F. vulgare was detected. We found that major components of the essential oil from F. vulgare were trans-anethole (73.6%), fenchone (6.0%), and limonene (5.7%). Antimicrobial activity on gram-positive, gram-negative, and yeasts was weak in liquid phase, but vapour phase showed stronger activity against B. subtilis at the concentration 250 μL.L−1 (98.65% of bacterial growth inhibition). Vapour phase of essential oil was effective against insects, where 25% concentration had 80% lethality.

Essential oil of chinese medicinal herb,Evodia rutaecarpaunripe fruits was found to possess insecticidal activity against maize weevils,Sitophilus zeamais and red flour beetlesTribolium castaneum. The essential oil ofE. rutaecarpawas obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 38 components of the essential oil were identified. The principal compounds inE. rutaecarpaessential oil wereβ-myrcene (17.7%), (Z)-β-ocimene (14.8%),α-phellandrene (14.7%),γ-terpinene (6.4%), linalool (5.7%) andβ-thujene (5.1%). Bioactivity-guided chromatographic separation of the essential oil on repeated silica gel columns led to isolate three volatile components (β-myrcene,β-ocimene andα-phellandrene) from the essential oil.α-Phellandrene was strongest fumigant againstS. zeamaisadults,T. castaneumadults andT. castaneumlarvae with LC50values of 15.61, 19.78 and 47.96 mg/L air, respectively.β-Myrcene andβ-ocimene also possess fumigant activity against the two species of insects but weaker fumigant activity than the crude essential oil.

The volatile components of essential oils of fresh aerial parts from horseweed (Conyza canadensis) collected in October with hydrodistillation and steam distillation, respectively, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that limonene, β-pinene, trans-α-bergamotene, cis-β-ocimene, β-myrcene, germacrene D, 1,3,8-p-menthatriene, caryophyllene, (E)-β-farnesene, (Z)-β-farnesene, α-curcumene, caryophyllene oxide were the common volatile components in the essential oils between hydrodistillation and steam distillation. High limonene content (68.87%) was in the essential oil with hydrodistillation. Limonene or other terpenoids has the potential to develop as the biomimetic synthesis template for environmentally-friendly herbicide.

The Casearia sylvestris Sw. dried leaf essential oil (EO) contains sesquiterpenes as the main components. However, the volatile components in the in natura leaves remain unknown. This study compares the volatile chemicals in the in natura leaves and dried leaf EO of two C. sylvestris populations from Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. The volatile compounds were directly analysed by thermal desorption (TD) coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS); the dried leaf EO composition was determined by GC-MS. All the identified compounds were sesquiterpenes, and the major components were (E)-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene, ?-elemene, spathulenol, and caryophyllene oxide. In both populations, the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon content and the oxygenated sesquiterpene content respectively decreased and increased on going from the in natura leaves to the dried leaf essential oil, indicating that drying and/or hydrodistillation modified the volatile chemical composition by generating oxidation artifacts. Results suggested that (E)-caryophyllene and bicyclogermacrene may be oxidized during the process to yield caryophyllene oxide and spathulenol, respectively. The two C. sylvestris populations also differed in terms of volatile chemical composition.

Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is recognized as one of the most important crude drugs in ancient Chinese medicine. Numerous pharmacological studies investigated P. ginseng; however, these studies were limited to ginsenosides, which are typical constituents in P. ginseng. We focused on the essential oil (EO) from P. ginseng as it has a typical aroma. Herein, we report the inhibitory activities of EO against β-secretase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), which were investigated in order to demonstrate the potential of EO as a preventative and therapeutic agent against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Essential oil (250 µg/mL) showed 41.4% inhibition against β-secretase, 77.4% inhibition against AChE, and 94.1% inhibition against BChE. In addition, spathulenol (8.82%, content % in EO), bicyclogermacrene (6.23%), β-elemene (3.94%), and α-humulene (3.69%) were identified as high content by Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. Furthermore, β-elemene and α-humulene showed high activity among 3 compounds with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 77.2 and 137.3 µM for AChE, and 298.2 and >2000 µM for BChE, respectively. In this report, we showed the inhibitory activity of EO from P. ginseng against β-secretase, AChE, and BChE, and demonstrated that EO could be a candidate to treat AD. This is the first research to report the anti-AD effect of EO and determination of its volatile components. Especially, β-elemene and α-humulene are expected to be highly bio-available compounds due to their small molecular size and lipophilicity. From these results, EO from P. ginseng may be a promising candidate for AD treatment.

Murrayae Folium et Cacumen (MFC) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived from the leaves and twigs of two aromatic species of Rutaceae: Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack and M. exotica L. It has long been used as a folk medicine in South China for the treatment of a variety of disorders, particularly for inflammatory lesions and pains. In the present study, a detailed chemical examination as well as a comparative analysis of the essential oil composition of M. paniculata and M exotica was conducted by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 141 volatile components were identified from the essential oil of these two plants. Sesquiterpenes were found to be the predominant constituents, accounting for 92.8% of the oil from M paniculata and 87.9% of that from M. exotica. A comparative analysis of the essential oil composition of these two plants revealed a high level of similarity in their main constituents, such as the co-occurrence of E-caryophyllene, spathulenol and δ-elemene, which gave the chemical evidence for their equal medicinal application as MFC in TCMs. Moreover, in combination with literature reports, E-caryophyllene was theoretically deduced as one of the pharmacologically effective components of MFC that is responsible for treating inflammatory lesions and for local anaesthesia.

This article is the first to study the chemical composition of the essential oils of the vegetative organs of the plant Phlomoidies nuda, distributed in Yangikurgan district of Namangan region of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The essential oils of the plant are separated by hydro-distillation, the chemical composition of which is studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. According to the data, the volatile components of the surface during the flowering period of Ph nuda are 1-Butanol (5.3%), 3-Carene (6.7%), D-Limonene (8.7%),1,8-Cineole (11.1%), m-Cymene (5.7%) was detected.
