Effect of Extended Aging on Asphalt Materials Containing Re-Refined Engine Oil Bottoms

The use of re-refined engine oil bottoms (REOBs) in asphalt pavements is a topic of much debate because the aging susceptibility and quantity of the additive in the binder may affect field performance. In this study, four mixtures with varying REOB contents (up to 15%) were long-term oven aged by using a high-temperature, short-duration method (135°C, 24 h) and compared with existing data on mixtures aged with more conventional short-term and long-term oven-aging procedures. The recovered binders underwent Superpave® grading, double-edge notched tension, and extended bending beam rheometer testing, and the binders were subjected to dynamic modulus, cyclic fatigue testing in the asphalt mixture performance tester, and thermal stress restrained specimen testing. Results showed a general insensitivity when short-term oven-aged (135°C, 4 h) materials were compared with long-term oven-aged (85°C, 5 days) materials, whereas the aging process at 135°C over 24 h resulted in substantial changes to the stiffness and relaxation properties across high-, intermediate-, and low-temperature modes. The difference between the stiffness-based and slope-based low-temperature performance grades appears to be an indicator for REOB modification, with the test for physical hardening of the binder being more sensitive than standard bending beam rheometer testing. The details in this paper provide information for the asphalt pavement community to consider as specifications. Standard practices are developed to address REOB modification.

This article studies the low-temperature anti-cracking properties of plain asphalt mixtures and rubber-modified asphalt mixtures at different aging condition. Laboratory flexural test was conducted on the beam specimens of plain asphalt mixtures and rubber-modified asphalt mixtures. Experiment results indicate that rubber-modified asphalt mixtures have superior low-temperature anti-cracking performance than that of plain asphalt mixtures. Compared with the short term oven aging test, the long term oven aging test has more significant effect on the low-temperature anti-cracking of the mixture. In order to better represent the low-temperature anti-cracking of in-service aging asphalt pavement, the long term oven aging test should be used to appraise the low-temperature anti-cracking of asphalt pavements in china.

Abstract In order to study the influence of different aging conditions on the low-temperature crack resistance and water stability of polyester fiber asphalt mixture. Prepare standard Marshall specimens of asphalt mixture with 0.4 % polyester fiber doping, and carry out water immersion Marshall test and low temperature splitting test through indoor asphalt mortar aging, asphalt mixture short-term aging and long-term aging. The results show that: under the three aging conditions, when the water immersion and low temperature time are fixed, with the increase of the aging degree, the water stability and low temperature crack resistance of the asphalt mixture decrease. When the immersion time is 2 h, the stability of asphalt mortar aging and short-term aging decreases by 6.0% and 11.8%, respectively, compared with unaging, but the long-term aging is only 3.6% lower than the short-term aging. When the temperature is -5℃, the split tensile strength of asphalt mortar aged and short-term aged increases by 4.24% and 14.35%, respectively, compared with unaging, while long-term aging only increases 4.18% compared with short-term aging. This indicates that the short-term aging condition has the most significant effect on the water stability and low-temperature crack resistance of polyester fiber asphalt mixes. At the same time, this study established a regression equation between the test temperature and the low temperature evaluation index through quadratic fitting (the correlation coefficient is 0.960-0.998), and the regression relationship can be used to estimate the low temperature evaluation index at different test temperatures.

This research aims to explore the high-temperature and low-temperature performances of lignin–waste engine oil-modified asphalt binder and its mixture. For this research, the lignin with two contents (4%, 6%) and waste engine oil with two contents (3%, 5%) were adopted to modify the control asphalt binder (PG 58-28). The high-temperature rheological properties of the lignin–waste engine oil-modified asphalt binder were investigated by the viscosity obtained by the Brookfield viscometer and the temperature sweep test by the dynamic shear rheometer. The low-temperature rheological property of the lignin–waste engine oil-modified asphalt binder was evaluated by the stiffness and m-value at two different temperatures (−18 °C, −12 °C) obtained by the bending beam rheometer. The high-temperature and the low-temperature performances of the lignin–waste engine oil-modified asphalt mixture were explored by the rutting test and low-temperature bending beam test. The results displayed that the rotational viscosity and rutting factor improved with the addition of lignin and decreased with the incorporation of waste engine oil. Adding the lignin into the control asphalt binder enhanced the elastic component while adding the waste engine oil lowered the elastic component of the asphalt binder. The stiffness of asphalt binder LO60 could not meet the requirement in the specification, but the waste engine oil made it reach the requirement based on the bending beam rheometer test. The waste engine oil could enhance the low-temperature performance. The dynamic stabilities of LO40- and LO60-modified asphalt mixture increased by about 9.05% and 17.41%, compared to the control mixture, respectively. The maximum tensile strain of LO45 and LO65 increased by 16.39% and 25.28% compared to that of LO40 and LO60, respectively. The high- and low-temperature performances of the lignin–waste engine oil-modified asphalt LO65 was higher than that of the control asphalt. The dynamic stability had a good linear relationship with viscosity, the rutting factor of the unaged at 58 °C, and the rutting factor of the aged at 58 °C, while the maximum tensile strain had a good linear relationship with m-value at −18 °C. This research provides a theoretical basis for the further applications of lignin–waste engine oil-modified asphalt.

Various agencies have begun to research and introduce performance-related specifications (PRS) for the design of modern asphalt paving mixtures. The focus of most recent studies has been directed toward simplified cracking test development and evaluation. In some cases, development and validation of PRS has been performed, building on these new tests, often by comparison of test values to accelerated pavement test studies and/or to limited field data. This study describes the findings of a comprehensive research project conducted at Illinois Tollway, leading to a PRS for the design of mainline and shoulder asphalt mixtures. A novel approach was developed, involving the systematic establishment of specification requirements based on: 1) selection of baseline values based on minimally acceptable field performance thresholds; 2) elevation of thresholds to account for differences between short-term lab aging and expected long-term field aging; 3) further elevation of thresholds to account for variability in lab testing, plus variability in the testing of field cores; and 4) final adjustment and rounding of thresholds based on a consensus process. After a thorough evaluation of different candidate cracking tests in the course of the project, the Disk-shaped Compact Tension—DC(T)—test was chosen to be retained in the Illinois Tollway PRS and to be presented in this study for the design of crack-resistant mixtures. The DC(T) test was selected because of its high degree of correlation with field results and its excellent repeatability. Tailored Hamburg rut depth and stripping inflection point thresholds were also established for mainline and shoulder mixes.

In the asphalt materials community, the most critical research need is centered around a paradigm shift in mixture design from the volumetric process of the previous 20-plus years to an optimization procedure based on laboratory-measured mechanical properties that should lead to an increase in long-term pavement performance. This study is focused on advancing the state of understanding with respect to the value of intermediate temperature cracking tests, which may be included in a balanced mix design. The materials included are plant-mixed, laboratory-compacted specimens reheated from the 2013 Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) study on reclaimed asphalt pavement/reclaimed asphalt shingle (RAP/RAS) materials. Six commonly discussed intermediate temperature (cracking and durability) performance testing (i.e., Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester [AMPT] Cyclic Fatigue, Cantabro, Illinois Flexibility Index Test [I-FIT], Indirect Tensile Cracking [ITC, also known as IDEAL-CT], Indirect Tensile Nflex, and Texas Overlay Test) were selected for use in this study based on input from stakeholders. Test results were analyzed to compare differences between the cracking tests. In addition, statistical analyses were conducted to assess the separation among materials (lanes) for each performance test. Cyclic fatigue and IDEAL-CT tests showed the most promising results. The ranking from these two tests’ index parameters matched closely with ALF field performance. Furthermore, both showed reasonable variability of test data and they were successful in differentiating between different materials.

A comparative analysis of the low temperature resistance for a nanocarbon bitumen and other 30 neat and modified bitumens has been performed in the work. The stiffness at the temperatures of -24°С, -30°С and -36°С under technical system Superpave has been accepted as an indicator of low temperature resistance of the bitumens. The stiffness of the bitumens has been determined on a bending beam rheometer (standard ASTM D 6648-08). Before testing the bitumens have been subjected to the double artificial aging: short-term aging – under standard AASHTO Т 240-13 and long-term aging – under standard ASTM D 6521-08. The nanocarbon bitumen has been prepared in the laboratory of the Kazakhstan Highway Research Institute (KazdorNII) with the use of a road bitumen of the grade BND 70/100 produced by the Pavlodar petrochemical plant (PNHZ) and a nanocarbon powder (2% by weight) manufactured from a coal rock of the deposit “Saryadyr” “Corporation “ON-Olzha” LLP, Akmola region, Kazakhstan). The nanocarbon powder (150-200 nm) has been manufactured by three-stage size reduction of the coal rock: I – a mechanical dispergator (up to 2-3 mm), II – an aerodynamic mill (up to 20 mcm), III – a reactor with a rotating electromagnetic field. The neat bitumens of the grades BND 50/70, BND 70/100, BND 100/130 have been produced by the plants of Kazakhstan and Russia; they satisfy the requirements of the standard ST RK 1373-2013. The modified bitumens have been prepared in the laboratory of KazdorNII with the use of the neat bitumens, 7 types of the polymers, crumb rubber and polyphosphoric acid and they satisfy the requirements of the standard ST RK 2534-2014. It has been determined that the nanocarbon bitumen is one of the most resistant at the low temperatures: -24°С, -30°С and -36°С.

There were no liabilities since long-term debts had been forbidden by the stat­ utes since 1702. The Company relied only on the funds contrib­ uted by its partners or on profits. After 1785, short-term debts were separated from each corresponding item of receipts. It was not until 1820 when the use of double entry bookkeeping showed liabilities as they are shown at the present time. The 18th item of the statutes of Plastrier’s Company3 men­ tions that profit is the difference between receipts and payments, and that "they were quarterly calculated after the constitution of a 15000£ (livres toumois) reserve." This was the only means the Company had of knowing how much could be paid to the owners. Such a simplified system was entirely in line with the desire to keep this information confidential. According to Sellon, an important Genevese shareholder of the Company, the simplified accounting system allowed any director, ignorant of accounting, to hold the Ledger sans confidens, that is without the help of a qualified accountant, so that secrets of the business could be preserved. The term "capital" was not used. The statutes only say fonds or effets, which correspond to the inventory value of all the assets of the Company at a fixed date. The owners' contributions to capital were made either in-kind (Venetian glass from Pocquelin in 1667) or in cash after 1702. They were considered an advance to the company, rewarded at a 10% rate. In general, the techniques to predict drought include statistical regression, time series, stochastic (or probabilistic), and, lately, pattern recognition techniques. All of these techniques require that a quantitative variable be identified to define drought, with which to begin the process of prediction. In the case of agricultural drought, such a variable can be the yield (production per unit area) of the major crop in a region (Kumar, 1998; Boken, 2000). The crop yield in a year can be compared with its long-term average, and drought intensity can be classified as nil, mild, moderate, severe, or disastrous, based on the difference between the current yield and the average yield. Regression techniques estimate crop yields using yield-affecting variables. A comprehensive list of possible variables that affect yield is provided in chapter 1. Usually, the weather variables routinely available for a historical period that significantly affect the yield are included in a regression analysis. Regression techniques using weather data during a growing season produce short-term estimates (e.g., Sakamoto, 1978; Idso et al., 1979; Slabbers and Dunin, 1981; Diaz et al., 1983; Cordery and Graham, 1989; Walker, 1989; Toure et al., 1995; Kumar, 1998). Various researchers in different parts of the world (see other chapters) have developed drought indices that can also be included along with the weather variables to estimate crop yield. For example, Boken and Shaykewich (2002) modifed the Western Canada Wheat Yield Model (Walker, 1989) drought index using daily temperature and precipitation data and advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) satellite data. The modified model improved the predictive power of the wheat yield model significantly. Some satellite data-based variables that can be used to predict crop yield are described in chapters 5, 6, 9, 13, 19, and 28. The short-term estimates are available just before or around harvest time. But many times long-term estimates are required to predict drought for next year, so that long-term planning for dealing with the effects of drought can be initiated in time.

Background:Data pertaining to changes in weight during long-term treatment with quetiapine (QTP) have been published previously (1).Methods:Pooled data are presented from 26 short-term clinical studies (up to 12 weeks) of QTP or quetiapine extended-release (QTP XR)-as monotherapy or adjunct therapy-conducted by AstraZeneca up to November 2007. Studies were conducted in adult patients (18-65 years) across a number of psychiatric diagnoses. Variables were analyzed irrespective of fasting status with similar analyses planned in the fasting subset. LSM changes from baseline for the difference between QTP and placebo are presented.Results:Approximately 10000 patients were included in the analyses, 70% of whom were treated with QTP or QTP XR. Across the entire short-term dataset, the difference in LSM change in weight for QTP vs. placebo was 1.07 kg. Corresponding differences in glucose regulation parameters were 1.39 mg/dL for glucose and 0.04% units for HbA1C. the overall difference in total cholesterol was 5.48 mg/dL, with differences in HDL and LDL cholesterol of -0.62 mg/dL and 1.69 mg/dL. the difference in LSM change in triglycerides was 22.62 mg/dL.Discussion:Within the context of balancing potential risks against the acknowledged benefits of atypical antipsychotics, the degree and significance of variations in metabolic parameters is an area of continued interest. This analysis helps clinicians to better understand changes in important metabolic parameters across trials with QTP and QTP XR, and the size and uniqueness of the dataset permits further analyses within this important area.Supported by funding from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP.
