This first biographical account of M. Aldanov was authored by M. Uralsky, a writer of documentary prose. While not a strict academic publication, the book shows a thorough approach to selection of the material and verification of facts and introduces hitherto unknown documents, thus qualifying as a compelling piece of scholarly research. The book’s three parts are dedicated to key periods of Aldanov’s life: ‘A young Aldanov — happy years’ (1886–1917), ‘A historical novelist of Russian emigration’ (1919–1940), and ‘The twilight of life and work’ (1947–1957). Uralsky uncovered a number of new materials relating to Aldanov’s childhood and adolescence and his work in emigration, completing a reconstruction of the writer’s life. The biographer examines Aldanov’s personality as an artist, a literary critic, a journalist and a scholar. The book’s leitmotif is to actualise Aldanov’s idea of writers dedicating themselves to kalokagathia — the ‘moral beauty.’

Background: Volodymyr Andriyovych Motornyi (1929–2015) is an outstanding Ukrainian Slavist, literary critic, culturologist, university lecturer, translator, diplomat, public figure. The scientific and pedagogical activity of the professor of the Department of Slavonic Philology at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is well known in the Slavic world. One of the most prominent representatives of Lviv Slavic studies, an active organiser of science, Professor Volodymyr Motornyi was a famous representative of Bohemistics. Along with Professor Kostiantyn Trofymovych, he launched the Ukrainian scientific school of Sorbian studies, actively studied and popularised the literature and culture of various Slavic nations. One can hardly overestimate his contribution to the development of Ukrainian science being a talented teacher who educated many generations of young Slavists, was a co-organiser of the Lviv International Slavic Colloquia, as well as numerous scientific and cultural events. Despite the existence of articles and reviews dedicated to Volodymyr Motornyi, the figure of the Professor deserves more detailed coverage and promotion of his creative heritage. Purpose: The article aims to introduce readers to a sort of the portrait of Professor Motornyi as a teacher and scholar; and given the scale of the scholar and the breadth of his interests, the authors have chosen the path of presentation of just a few aspects of his work. A special place is given to the combination of objective and subjective presentation of the Professor: the facts of the biography of the scholar are supplemented by the memories of the colleagues and students. Results: The article outlines the basic touches to the portrait of Professor Volodymyr Andriyovych Motornyi, a remarkable Ukrainian scholar, one of the most prominent representatives of Lviv Slavic studies. The key dates of the biography are given, the main directions of scientific, pedagogical, and creative activity of the Slavist are analysed. Memoirs of the colleagues – well-known scholars, former students and followers of the Professor – are an important element of the article. The article is currently the most complete and comprehensive presentation of the figure of the outstanding Ukrainian scholar, educator, organiser of science, intellectual and Teacher. Gippius that supplement the «Berdiaev» narrative are published as an appendix.

My intention in this, and in my two preceding papers on the same subject, has not been, and is not, to give any thing like a new biographical account of Sir Walter Raleigh, but merely to touch upon some points, which, I think, have not been sufficiently illustrated; to correct and settle a few dates; and to add various matters that have either been unknown to, or have been passed over by those who have professed to write the life of this most deserving, but not less unfortunate, favourite of Elizabeth. I make this statement now, because, as I am informed, my purpose has been a little misunderstood; since it has been thought by some, that I was aiming at more than I pretend to accomplish. I merely furnish additional materials to those who may hereafter be disposed to treat the inquiry in detail and upon system. I recommence where I left off in my last; and beg of those who may think matters of the kind not so apposite to our ordinary inquiries, to remember that Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the founders of our Society, and on that account only, if he had no other claims, would merit the utmost interest we can take regarding him.

Abstract A program to test and evaluate external pipeline coatings is described. When this program was started ten years ago, many methods and procedures then in use did not give all of the information desired. Field burial tests are lengthly and because of the variable conditions which govern results can neither be controlled nor evaluated with any precision. Only laboratory type tests are suitable for a closely controlled system of coating evaluation. Laboratory results must be correlated with field service performance. This test program was in three phases: First, laboratory procedures and apparatus were developed. Second, commonly used coatings were tested ana laboratory results correlated with field performance data. Third, new materials were tested and their performance compared with coatings in common use. Laboratory and field test procedures and apparatus are described. A discussion on the application of test data to selection of pipeline coatings is included. 2.1.2

In Italy the history of modern equipment design has shifted between ‘mass production and one-off’, as architects Gio Ponti and Antonio Fornaroli wrote in an article in the magazine Domus (1948). Starting from this important reflection by the two Italian architects, the article takes into consideration the case study of office furniture.The aim of the article is to identify the cultural landscape of Italian design during the twentieth century, taking into consideration the example of the office desk as fil rouge of the history of design in Italy.The methodology adopted is deductive: starting from the selection of some case studies (desks designed for some elitist furnishings or, vice versa, for serial reproduction) and in relation to the architectural and cultural context in which they were created, some key concepts are deduced in order to understand the progressive adherence of Italian architects to the idea of modernity, and then to the massification of industrial design. New materials and ancient ‘know-how’ have merged into projects that have distinguished the history of design in Italy as original.The conclusion highlights how in the history of Italian office furniture as a multi-faceted history, where elite furniture can become a democratic product, until it becomes part of the contemporary office.

Despite the fact that the construction industry in Brazil is traditionally recognized for the use of craft construction techniques, in the last few years, there has been a growth in the search for new materials, processes, and technologies for this segment.  This is mainly due to the great environmental impact that this sector causes. Based on this context, this article aimed to map the constructive processes of existing roofs in the literature, to raise its advantages, disadvantages and previous cases. To achieve this aim, the systematic review method based on three phases –  research questions, selection of documents and classification of selected documents, and the 5W2H quality tool were used. Thus, this research could contribute to the literature on this topic, as well as encourage the idealization of new ideas of roof construction processes.

Abstract Ethylene—styrene copolymers are new materials developed within the last decade using the new homogeneous olefin polymerization catalysts (generally referred to as “metallocene catalysts”). By proper selection of the catalytic system and the reaction conditions, a variety of copolymers with different compositions, structures, and properties can be obtained. Thus, copolymers containing a very low amount of styrene (or p-methylstyrene) on a substantially polyethylenic backbone are crystalline thermoplastics, which could be used to produce functionalized PEs. Increasing the styrene content leads to a rapid decrease in the crystallinity, affording materials which show good thermoelastomeric properties. Copolymers containing around 20 mol % styrene are effective compatibilizers for polyethylene—polystyrene blends. The molecular structure of these copolymers has been defined being “pseudorandom,” since EEE, EES, ESE, and SES sequences are observed, and no SS sequences are present, thus the styrene content cannot exceed 50 mol %. Very recently, however, a random copolymer containing SS sequences in a stereoregular arrangement has been reported. Also, truly alternating E-S copolymers have been obtained with suitable catalysts. These poly(ethylene-alt-styrenes) can be either atactic (and thus amorphous) or stereoregular, depending on the particular catalyst used. Interestingly, isotactic poly(ethylene-alt-styrene) is a new crystalline material with a melting point of 145 °C, whose crystal structure has recently been determined. In conclusion, further research on ethylene—styrene copolymerization promises to afford a variety of new interesting materials starting from two widespread, easily available and inexpensive monomers.

The use of a new material is a hopeful strategy for breaking through the barrier of improving the product performance and/or the lowering of the product manufacturing cost. However, if the definite decision making method for selection of materials has not been established, use of a new material may not result in enhancement of the product performance and/or reduction of the product manufacturing cost. This paper proposes a methodology for decision making of a material used in machine structures from the standpoint of structural dynamics. First, purposes for use of new materials and evaluative parameters for decision making of material choice are described, and fundamental knowledge and theorems for decision making are established. Then, general decision making procedures for material choice are constructed. Finally, for model cases of purposes for use of new materials, detailed decision procedures are explained using also some numerical examples.

This manuscript presents important material challenges regarding innovative Gen-II/III nuclear systems and research reactors. The challenges are discussed alongside the key achievements so far realised within the framework of 4 EU-funded projects: H2020 IL TROVATORE, FP7 MULTIMETAL, FP7 MATTER and FP7 SCWR-FQT. All the four Projects deal with innovative researches on materials to enhance the safety of nuclear reactors. IL TROVATORE proposes new materials for fuel cladding of PWR reactors and tests in order to really find out an “Accident Tolerant Fuel” (ATF). MULTIMETAL focused on optimization of dissimilar welds fabrication having considered the field performances and dedicated experiments. MATTER carried on methodological and experimental studies on the use of grade 91 steel in the harsh environment of liquid metal cooled EU fast reactors. SCWR-FQT focused on fuel qualification of Supercritical Water Reactor including the selection of the better material to resist the associated high thermal flux.
