AbstractThe Harvard political science professor Samuel P. Huntington (1927–2008) made visits to Brazil in 1972 and 1974 to advise the government about ‘decompression’ or regime liberalisation. The literature on Brazil's dictatorship references these visits as having had a major causal impact. This article argues that his influence on Brazilian regime change is greatly exaggerated. It also argues that Huntington, who became a leading theorist of democratisation, had an interest in and commitment to democracy that was more recent and circumstantial than is often thought. This helps to explain the current period of democratic ‘deconsolidation’ associated with the rise of authoritarian national populism in Brazil.

David E. Cox, a veteran pastoral minister specializing in interim ministry and who is now a library leader, and Carisse M. Berryhill, a library science professor, explore how skills used by interim pastors can be applied by interim leaders or new directors to successfully lead libraries making the transition to new leadership. Cox recommends using a system-based strategy that moves through five steps: coming to terms with history, discovering a new identity, allowing for needed leadership change, reaffirming community with stakeholders, and commitment to new directions in programs and services.

This year, the 1150th anniversary of the great scientist Abu Nasir al-Farabi is widely celebrated. In this regard, it is necessary to especially note the merits of the outstanding researcher of the history and pedagogy of Muslim East science, Professor Audanbek Kubessov, who restored the true image of the great scientist as a thinker-mathematician, naturalist and teacher. His special contribution to science as a scientist is directly related to the study of the research works of the great scientist Abu Nasir al-Farabi. A. Kubesov researched the rich scientific heritage of al-Farabi and published more than two hundred scientific, popular and science and other works, translations from the Arabic language of the great scientist. Our current duty is to use and promote the rich heritage of our ancestor al-Farabi in teaching and educating the youth.

The article presents a historical development path of the Laboratory of biochemistry of adaptation and ontogenesis of animals which began with the founding of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry of Farm Animals in 1960. At the beginning of its existence laboratory was called “The laboratory of higher nervous activity” and was headed by associate professor Dr. I. A. Medyanyk. Since 1962 it was called “The laboratory of neurohumoral regulation” and was headed by Dr. of science, Professor E. M. Berkovych. Since 1963 the laboratory was headed by Dr. of science, Professor Z. P. Skorodynsky. Since 1972 the laboratory was headed by Dr. M. D Hanin, since 1980 — Professor V. M. Holovach, since 1988 — academician of NAAS, Professor V. V. Snitynsky. In 1994 the laboratory was renamed into the laboratory of endocrine regulation. Since 2011 until now the laboratory is called “The laboratory of biochemistry of adaptation and ontogenesis of animals”. From 2011 to 2013 duties of the laboratory head were performed by Dr. O. M. Buchko. From 2013 until now the head of the laboratory is Dr. of science, senior researcher R. Ya. Iskra.

We investigated how Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms could automatically grade answers to open-ended inference questions in web-based eBooks. This is a component of research on making reading more motivating to children and to increasing their comprehension. We obtained and graded a set of answers to open-ended questions embedded in a fiction novel written in English. Computer science students used a subset of the graded answers to develop algorithms designed to grade new answers to the questions. The algorithms utilized the story text, existing graded answers for a given question and publicly accessible databases in grading new responses. A computer science professor used another subset of the graded answers to evaluate the students’ NLP algorithms and to select the best algorithm. The results showed that the best algorithm correctly graded approximately 85% of the real-world answers as correct, partly correct, or wrong. The best NLP algorithm was trained with questions and graded answers from a series of new text narratives in another language, Slovenian. The resulting NLP algorithm model was successfully used in fourth-grade language arts classes for providing feedback to student answers on open-ended questions in eBooks.
