Transformation to Room Service Food Delivery In a Pediatric Health Care Facility

Patient food service is an important component in the nutritional management of hospitalized children. The previous meal delivery system at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto was a cold-plating re-thermalized system. Issues related to this model included order lead time, the reheating process, menu selection, and service style. Research into other systems led us toward room service, an innovative and flexible mode of meal delivery. Transformation to room service occurred over one year, and included implementation of a new computer system, kitchen renovation, redesign of menus and a new meal delivery system called Meal Train, and changes to human resource allocations. Throughout the transformation, consultations were held with key stakeholders, including the children’s council, the family advisory, the nursing council, and a multidisciplinary committee involving nursing staff, dietitians, patient service aides, infection control personnel, occupational health employees, patient representatives, and food services staff. Now, Meal Train is running smoothly, and meal days and food costs have been reduced. Others considering a project like this must know their clients’ needs and be willing to think outside the box. They should familiarize themselves with current information on systems and equipment, consult with key stakeholders within their organization, and then create the system that will work for them.

The food delivery service industry is growing up and has a good potential rate in Malaysia and globally now. With social distancing the new norm, consumers are demanding to have takeout food delivered in parallel with government standard procedure in the Covid-19 pandemic. This research was conducted to examine the satisfaction of customers by using online food delivery services in Malaysia using a quantitative method. It will deal with consumer behaviour, needs, and user requirement elements in analysing their perceptions and satisfaction that will give the best-indicated system to understand consumer stability. For the accomplishment of this research, the survey was distributed to the public via online. The development of instruments based on the guideline of System Usability Scale (SUS), the reliable tools for measuring and evaluate a wide variety of products and services. Some modification in basic instruments was done to meet the requirement study. A full-fledged questionnaire was distributed among the 150 to 200 respondents to know their feedback on the food service delivery system in Malaysia. After the process of data cleaning, only 153 respondents included and considered for discussion and debate in this paper. The behaviour and user satisfaction level by using the online food services system will discuss further and some comparisons will be the main output of this research. Overall, most of the respondents satisfied with the service provided by Food Panda Service and Grab Food Service because the system easy to use and delivery time is equitable.

Family meals provide a unique opportunity for families to eat well and engage positively with each other. In response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, a new initiative to support health care staff to share healthy meals with their families was developed. At a hospital in Queensland, Australia, dietetic staff collaborated with the on-site food service retailer to develop and offer a range of hot meals that staff could take home for their families at the end of their day. The meals were nutritious, reasonably priced, and designed to feed a family of four. The dietetic staff worked with the hospital marketing department and staff health and wellness program to promote the initiative. Over the 3 months that it has been running, nearly 300 meals have been purchased. Anecdotal comments from the food service retailer highlighted that the initiative was a good thing to do for staff to maintain a positive reputation of the business. The staff evening meal initiative is a healthy, affordable, educational, and socially engaging alternative to takeaway meals and food delivery by app, and it is mutually beneficial for health care staff and the on-site food retailer. The initiative also offers a unique opportunity for promoting nutrition and social engagement during stressful times.

The improvement of patients’ food satisfaction and acceptance in the hospitals is primarily needed in the food service  system.  Room service is a new concept in the food service area. This study aims to compare the effects of two different types of food service systems; room service and conventional service system. The study with quasi-experimental design is conducted to the subject of 66 inpatients who were taken using a quota sampling method. Subjects were divided into different groups, the treatment groups (room service) and control groups (conventional). Leftover food between groups was compared for 9 large meals to determine acceptability. Food satisfaction is measured on the last day with using questionnaire. The study was conducted in April-June 2014. Chi-Square test and logistic regression were used for analysis of research data. There were significant differences food satisfaction (RR=4.6; p=0.0001) and food acceptance (RR=1.94; p=0.0488) between control and treatment group. The logistic regression test showed that room service group had higher food satisfaction and food acceptance level than control group after controlling confounding factors, which were 12,11 times (95% CI 3,593 – 37,219) and 2,38 times (95% CI 0,68-8,31), respectively. The room service increases food satisfaction and food acceptance of patients compared with conventional systems.

Getting food through online food apps has gained momentum in recent times. Online tools have shown a new perspective on the food industry. Online allows consumers to choose the food of their choice anytime, anywhere. Facilities like net banking and digital wallet payments, cash on delivery and minimum order value attract the customer well. Distances between City and Village have been reduced due to the widespread use of smart phones. Companies are making their services available online according to the convenience and preference of the customer to keep pace with the changing times. Due to the present Covid-19 pandemic situation, the online food delivery system is gaining momentum. In this research, we will specifically look at the growth and significance of digital apps in food delivery systems operated by food companies in India in specific and some of the approaches they can accept for maintainable business in the coming days and challenges faced by the company.

Purpose: Links between food service characteristics and residents’ risk of malnutrition were examined. Methods: Cognitively intact residents meeting inclusion criteria and living in one of 38 participating nursing homes were randomly sampled. The final sample consisted of 132 residents, who were screened for risk of malnutrition and completed a face-to-face interview questionnaire about dining experiences. Additional data came from participants’ medical charts, and each institution's food service manager completed a written questionnaire. Frequencies and logistic regressions were used to describe the sample and to examine relationships between risk of malnutrition and food service characteristics. Results: Overall, 37.4% of participants were at risk of malnutrition. Food service factors, including food packages, lids, and dishes that were difficult to manipulate (β=0.285, p=0.009), bulk food-delivery systems (β=1.329, p=0.036), overall food satisfaction (β=0.253, p=0.044), menu cycle length (β=-2.162, p=0.003), and porcelain dishes (β=-0.345, p=0.052), all were significantly associated with risk of malnutrition. Conclusions: Our findings clearly show a need for nursing homes to modify certain aspects of food service that may increase the risk of malnutrition among cognitively intact residents.
