Anne Finch came to be considered one of the most influential female figures of the Augustan era because of her free, intimate exploration of nature and gender through poetry as well as her ability to seamlessly blend both classical and modern genres. In this article, Finch's unique style, voice, and perspective are examined in the context of "A Nocturnal Reverie," the final poem in her only published collection in 1713. "A Nocturnal Reverie" best showcases Finch's subtle but subversive style as she revisits scenes from John Milton,  criticizes the idyllic presentation of mankind's relationship with nature, and makes a proto-feminist argument against woman's confinement to the domestic sphere all while operating under the pretext of nature poetry.

PurposeWhile each genre and gender has been revealed as significant moderators for esports gameplay intention, exploring the interaction effects between genre and gender could broaden our understanding of the drivers’ relative effects on esports gameplay intention. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the interaction effects of gender and genre in the relationship between esports gameplay intention and its drivers (i.e. hedonic motivation, habit, price value, effort expectancy, social influence and flow).Design/methodology/approachThe hypothesized model was examined using data from a sample (N = 1,194). For the purposes of data analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used to examine the hypothesized model. Then, a series of structural invariance tests were conducted to compare the interrelationship between the six determinants and esports gameplay for the six-group model.FindingsThe results of the six-group model comparison indicated that the interaction between gender and genre moderates the relationship between drivers and esports gameplay intention. In particular, the following moderation effects were observed: (1) “social influence-esports gameplay intention” between “male-physical enactment” and “female-physical enactment”; (2) “habit-esports gameplay intention” and (3) “effort expectancy-esports gameplay intention” between “female-imagination” and “female-physical enactment”; (4) “hedonic motivation-esports gameplay intention” and (5) “effort expectancy-esports gameplay intention” between “female-physical enactment” and “female-sport simulation.”Originality/valueThe findings of this current study contributed to clarifying the genre and gender effects in esports gameplay intention and thus the extension of the Esports Consumption (ESC) model (Jang et al., 2020a) and the technology adoption literature. Since the ESC model grounded the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), the improvement of the ESC model extended UTAUT2. In consumer behavior research in the esports context, this current study contributed to the extension of UTAUT2 on the new moderating mechanisms by adding the interaction between gender and esports game genre.

AbstractThis essay focuses on the relationship between form and culture. It demonstrates how architectural evidence can be used in the historical reconstruction of social and cultural processes. In this research, the architectural metamorphosis of the kitchen in the Palestinian Arab society in Israel is outlined from the end of the Ottoman rule to the late twentieth century. Beginning in late nineteenth-century rural Palestine, when preparation of food was an integral part of the agricultural way of life, this essay traces the kitchen's departure from the interior space during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel; its return to the house in the sixties; and the subsequent changes in the design of the kitchen during the last quarter of the previous century. This socio-architectural analysis seeks to examine forms of life in a broad historical context of social, economic, and political transformations, and to carefully draw significant insights about the status of women in the domestic sphere from the architectural history of the kitchen.

AbstractIn the past two decades, remembrance has emerged as one of the dominant preoccupations in Irish historical scholarship. There has, however, been little sustained analysis of the relationship between gender and memory in Irish studies, and gender remains under-theorized in memory studies more broadly. Yet one of the striking aspects of nineteenth-century commemorations of the 1798 and 1803 rebellions is the relatively prominent role accorded to women and, in particular, Sarah Curran, Pamela Fitzgerald, and Matilda Tone, the widows of three of the most celebrated United Irish “martyrs.” By analyzing the mnemonic functions these female figures performed in nineteenth-century Irish nationalist discourse, this article offers a case study of the circumstances in which women may be incorporated into, rather than excluded, from national memory cultures. This incorporation, it is argued, had much to do with the fraught political context in which the 1798 rebellion and its leaders were memorialized. As the remembrance of the rebellion in the first half of the nineteenth century assumed a covert character, conventionally gendered distinctions between private grief and public remembrance, intimate histories and heroic reputations, and family genealogy and public biography became blurred so as to foreground women and the female mourner.

This chapter considers table talk at home in order to understand the significance of conversations in the domestic sphere for civility and democracy. It discusses the complicated relations of domesticity and family, with domination and control, on the one hand, and care and connection, on the other. More specifically, it examines kichen talk, family meals, bridging generations, kids cooking, table manners, talking about one's day, training tables, dinner parties, personal expression, and transition tables. It describes domesticity as a domain of contradictions: inegalitarianism and egalitarianism, hierarchy and democracy, domination and care, gender inequality and gender transformation. It also explores the implications of domesticity for children of blended families and shows that domestic tables are places where we learn rules about sharing, participating, and speaking. Finally, it explains how inclusion in domestic table conversation fosters self-esteem, resiliency, and a sense of belonging to something larger than oneself.

Abstract This article explores the television adaptation of Sonallah Ibrahim’s novel Zaat, arguing that the series provides us with an interesting representation of the various ways in which national projects in Egypt are gendered. It adds to feminist debates around nationalism, capitalism, and gender. In particular, the focus on the intimate in Zaat reveals how political projects are depicted in the domestic sphere through the lens of women’s work. The article explores two themes: one, the increasing financial pressure and its effects on constructs of masculinity and femininity, and two, the steady decay of infrastructure and social services and how it renders middle-class life an impossibility. The article argues that by focusing on the intimate, Ibrahim’s novel and the TV adaptation both reveal the various forms of work women perform and make use of women’s work to critique or celebrate national projects.

This study aims to describe the image of Adonara women and the types of gender injustice experienced by female characters in the novel "Ikhtiar Cinta dari Adonara" by J. S. Maulana. This study uses a literary approach based on literary studies of feminism and gender. The object of research is the description of Adonara women and gender injustice found in the novel "Ikhtiar Cinta dari Adonara" by J. S. Maulana. The source of data in this study is the novel “Ikhtiar Cinta Adonara’ by J. S Maulana. The novel written by J. S. Maulana consists of 320 pages. Published by Kaysa Media (Puspa Swara Group) in 2014. The data analysis technique was done by reducing data, presenting data analysis and interpreting the data and summarizing the results of research in order to obtain a picture of the image of women in the novel "Ikhtiar Cinta dari Adonara" by J. S. Maulana. In this study, researchers analyzed two female figures to describe the image of women in the novel. The results obtained are (a) The image of a woman, namely the figure of Syarifah, is a Muslim who is devout in worship and always submits to God, a woman who is educated, tough, has positive thoughts, is courageous and principled, is humble, and a woman who loves sincerely. (b) Fatimah's self-image, namely women who are willing to sacrifice, are brave and have principles, (c) gender injustice is found, namely marginalization, subordination, stereotypes, violence, and workload.

This essay is about the relationship between comic form and domestic politics—about how Shakespeare makes comedy out of household encounters, and how his plays might have intervened in current political thinking about family life and gender relations. Bringing the plays into dialogue with a range of contemporary prescriptive literature about household practice, it argues that the relationship between comedy as a genre and the patriarchal ideals of domestic organization which structured early modern society was a turbulent one, and that this adds to the plays’ political purchase and their theatrical power. The essay looks in detail at relationships between household heads, children and parents, and servants and their masters, focusing on the qualities of submission and authority which Shakespeare develops in his verse and staging—it aims to answer the question, just how does he put domestic encounters on the early modern stage?

Eliana's novel emphasizes Islamic moral values and gender equality, where these values are inserted through dialogues and activities carried out by the characters. Starting from the first chapter, Eliana has been depicted as a girl who has an awareness that society treats boys and girls differently solely based on their sex. So she tried to show that her abilities were commensurate with boys deserving of awards. This characteristic is considered strange and unusual for the society in the village. The moral values of Islam contained in Eliana's novels include tauhid, honesty, courage, cooperation, qana'ah, discipline, love, birrul walidain, responsibility, keeping promises, harmony, love of nature, forgiveness and earnest . The value of gender equality in Eliana's novel is seen from three things, namely the views of male and female figures and vice versa, the image of male and female leaders, and the roles of male and female leaders.

AbstractGyörgyi Vajdovich’s article aims to describe the representation of female roles in Hungarian feature films of the period 1931 to 1944. The study is based on the analysis of the database that was created within the framework of the research project The Social History of Hungarian Cinema. Concentrating on the representation of female protagonists, this article first analyses the presence and prevalence of female figures in all Hungarian sound films (up until 2015). Then it narrows the scope of analysis to films produced between 1931 and 1944, and describes the typical professions and social and financial positions of female protagonists, as compared to those of male protagonists. The second half of the text examines the representation of female upward mobility in comedies – showing that according to the popular myths of the era, female upward mobility is principally realized through good marriage, with the narratives of the films rarely presenting the professional success of female protagonists and their possibilities of emancipation. Analysing the narrative patterns and gender roles in the films of the time, the text concludes that the narratives of female ascension, which mostly took form in comedies, reflected the desire of middle-class people to transgress the social and financial boundaries in society. As such, the films served to maintain and strengthen the patriarchal order of the era.

This chapter deals with the legal responses to various forms of personal behaviour within the domestic sphere which may amount to physical or emotional abuse. It begins with discussions of the definition of domestic violence and abuse; the scale of domestic abuse; government strategy; and gender-based abuse as a breach of human rights. It then turns to the protection afforded by the criminal law; civil law remedies; and remedies through housing law. It concludes by considering whether the legal response to domestic violence should primarily be the use of the criminal law or through the civil law.
