Zinc (Ⅱ)-immune pediatric virucidal activities for children with 2019-nCoV prevention and COVID-19 bronchitis and pneumonia are discussed, and these Zn2+-immune pediatric virucidal effects result in the following. Zinc intakes by zinc induced immunity are required 3 mg/day for 7 month to 3 years, 5 mg/day for 4~ 8 years, and 8 mg/day for 9 ~13 years in children. Zinc supplementation have been assessed, from 15 mg to 140 mg/week, with the upper range exceeding the recommended daily infection (RDI) for children of 2 mg/day for children less than one year of age and up to 7 mg/day for children between 1 to 3 years. Zinc induced pediatric preventing respiratory 2019-nCoV is required that supplementation with zinc gluconate 20 mg in Zn deficient children resulted in a nearly twofold reduction of acute lower respiratory infections as well as the time to recovery. Zinc supplementation in children is associated with a reduction in the incidence and prevalence of pneumonia. Preventing 2019-nCoV pneumonia is required that zinc supplementation alone (10 to 20 mg) for more than 3 months significantly reduces in the rate of pneumonia. Prophylactic zinc supplementation for two weeks may reduce the morbidity due to acute lower respiratory infections. Zinc gluconate supplement may result in significant reduction in respiratory morbidity among children with acute lower respiratory infections. In addition. as serum zinc level of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI)-children was very low, higher zinc concentration treatments as low sociodemographic factors, poor nutritional status and male children were prevalently associated with higher incidence of acute respiratory infections. Adjuvant treatment with 20 mg zinc/day accelerates recovery from severe pneumonia in children. Primary outcome was recovery from pneumonia and 30 mg/day of zinc supplementation reduces pneumonia in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Zinc supplementation + Chloroquine (CQ)/hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) may be more effective in reducing COVID-19 morbidity and mortality than CQ or HCQ in monotherapy. The serum zinc level returned to a normal level (median, 53.20 μmol/L) on day 12±2 in the treatment. There was no statistical difference in the pediatric critic illness score, lung injury score, length of hospital stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation between the zinc treatments. The oxidative stress in pediatric diseases causes an oxidative burst that results in a respiratory burst and rapid ROS production. Thus, zinc pediatric intake may be required to be effective range 10~20 mg/d for 2019-CoV prevention, 10~30 mg/d for reduction of COVID-19 bronchitis, and 20~30 mg/d for recovery from COVID-19 pneumonia, in which Zn2+ could bind with viral surface proteins by Zn2+ions-centered tetrahedrally coordination pattern.

Abstract Background: Recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) is one of the most common recurrent infective vesiculoulcerative lesions. Topical and systemic administration of Zinc compounds has been found to have preventive and therapeutic effects. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the serum level of zinc in patients with RHL and healthy individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 43 patients with the history of recurrent herpers labialis and 42 healthy subjects with no history of the lesion. Blood samples were taken and serum zinc level was measured. Chi-Square test was used to compare the qualitative relationships and to compare the quantitative relationships independent T-test was used. To observe the relationship of quantitative factors including serum zinc level, the number of relapses and recovery rates correlation test was taken. Results: The results show that serum zinc level has no significant difference in healthy subjects and patients (p> 0.05). Also, zinc level was not related to age and sex factors and frequency of relapse (P> 0.05). But surprisingly in the patients group, there was a significant relationship between zinc level and recovery period. As the serum zinc level was lower, the duration of recovery was significantly higher (p =0.009). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that zinc deficiency is a risk factor for increasing the duration of herpes labialis lesions. Therefore, the evaluation of serum zinc level in subjects with recurrent herpes labialis and subsequent administration of zinc is recommended in such patients.

Background Short stature/stunting is common in developing countries, and has been used as an indicator of a nation’s general health condition. Short stature increases the risk of metabolic disease, disturbances in cognitive development, infection prevalence, physical as well as functional deficits, and even death. Nutritional factors that frequently cause stunting are low intake of energy, protein, or micronutrients such as iron, vitamin A, and zinc. The role of zinc supplementation in children with short stature has not been well defined. In addition, zinc supplementation should be evaluated in the setting of specific conditions and regions.Objective To assess the association between low serum zinc level and short stature in children.Methods This cross-sectional study was done in a primary health care center at Klungkung I, Klungkung District, from August to September 2013. Children with short and normal stature (as reference group) were enrolled and their serum zinc level was measured, Other risk factors were inquired by questionnaire. Association between low serum zinc level (<65 µg/dL) and short stature was analyzed by stepwise multivariable regression analysis; degree of association was presented as odds ratio (OR) and its corresponding confidence interval.Results The prevalence of low serum zinc level in our subjects was 71%. Low serum zinc level was significantly associated with short stature [adjusted OR 16.1; 95%CI 3.1 to 84.0; (P=0.001)]. In addition, the occurrence of low serum zinc was higher in the short stature group (88.5%) compared to the normal stature group (53.8%). We also found that low calorie intake was associated with short stature [adjusted OR 29.4; 95%CI 2.76 to 314.7; (P=0.001)].Conclusion Low serum zinc level appears to be associated with short stature. <p><strong>Background:</strong> Inferile males have been shown to have lower levels of seminal plasma zinc which have been associated with reduced levels of zinc in their blood. Supplementation improve semen parameters by improving zinc level in blood. </p><p><strong>Objective:</strong> To fnd out whether zinc supplementation is effective in improving semen parameters in oligo­asthenozoospermic patients.</p><p><strong>Method:</strong> The study was carried out in the Infertility unit of the Dept of Obs &amp; Gynae, BSMMU during the period of March 2011 to February 2012. Seventy five oligo-asthenozoospermic patients having no history of medical treatment were recruited for the study. The patients were divided into two groups by odd and even numbers. Odd numbers received tablet zinc 20 mg twice daily (Group A) and even numbers received placebo (Group B).Serum zinc level and seminal zinc level estimation were done by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectropho­tometry and semen analysis was done according to WHO guidelines (1999). Data analysis was done using software SPSS (version 16) by applying ANOVA (PostHock) and Paired Student's 't' test.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Serum zinc level was low in oligo­zoospermic patients which showed significant improvement with zinc supplementation (A+ 197.83 mmol/1, P&lt;0.01). Mean (±SD) seminal plasma zinc level showed significant improvement in group A following zinc supplementation (+942.39 mmol/L, P&lt;0.001). The mean increase in sperm count, sperm motility, sperm rapid linear motility, sperm morphology in group A following zinc supplementation for 12 weeks was 14.83 million/ml (P&lt;0.01), 16.30% (P&lt;0.01), 11.96% (P&lt;0.01), 4.26% (P&lt;0.001) respectively, which was statistically significant.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The study shows zinc deficiency affects sperm count, sperm motility, rapid linear motility and sperm morphology and with zinc supplementa­tion there can be significant improvement in semen parameters.</p>

This study examined the effect of zinc supplementation on the sleep quality (SQ) of intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 54 ICU nurses were randomly assigned to the intervention group ( n = 27) that received 220 mg zinc sulfate capsules every 72 hours for 1 month and the control group ( n = 26) that received placebo. Sleep quality of ICU nurses was measured by calculating the total quality sleep score using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The serum zinc level was a secondary outcome. All measurements were calculated at both baseline and 1 month after intervention. The total PSQI, subjective SQ, and sleep latency scores for the intervention group were significantly lower than the control group, which means that the SQ of ICU nurses in the intervention group improved from baseline. The serum zinc level of the intervention group at the end of the study was significantly higher than the control group, which means that zinc supplementation improved participants’ serum zinc level. Based on these findings, the researcher suggested that zinc supplementation could be associated with better SQ, subjective SQ, and sleep latency in this group of workers.

Results The results show that, serum zinc level has no significant difference between healthy subjects and the patients (p > 0.05). Also, zinc level was not related to age and sex factors and frequency of relapse (p > 0.05). However surprisingly, there was a significant relationship between zinc level and recovery period in the RHL patients. The lower the serum zinc level, the higher the duration of recovery (p = 0.009). Conclusion The results of this study indicate that, zinc deficiency can be considered as a risk factor for increasing the duration of herpes labialis lesions. Therefore, the evaluation of serum zinc level in the subjects with RHL and subsequent administration of zinc are recommended in these kind of patients.

Abstract Background Zinc is an essential micronutrient for maintaining biological activity. The level of zinc in the blood is known to decrease with age, especially in those over 75 years of age. In older adults patients with impaired functional status, aspiration pneumonia based on dysphagia often becomes problematic. However, the relationship between zinc deficiency and swallowing function has not been studied before. Methods A total of 52 older adults subjects (15 males and 37 females) living in a nursing home were enrolled for this study. At the time of enrollment, data of gender, age, body weight, serum zinc levels, serum albumin levels, and the time in a simple 2-step swallowing provocation test (S-SPT) were collected. In patients with serum zinc levels < 60 μg/dL, we initiated 2 months of oral zinc supplementation therapy with a 34 mg/day zinc load. Those who underwent zinc supplementation were re-evaluated after the treatment period and serum zinc levels and S-SPT time were measured. Results At the time of enrollment, serum zinc level was significantly correlated with serum albumin levels (Pearson’s R = 0.58, p < 0.0001) and time in the S-SPT (Spearman’s rho = − 0.32, p = 0.0219). Twenty-five of the 52 patients had zinc deficiency with a serum zinc level < 60 μg/dL. After 2 months of oral zinc supplementation, both serum zinc levels (p < 0.0001) and time in the S-SPT (p = 0.04) significantly improved. Meanwhile, serum albumin level (p = 0.48) or body weight (p = 0.07) did not significantly change following zinc supplementation. Zinc supplementation significantly improved swallowing function, especially in the older adults who had comorbid dysphagia and zinc deficiency. Conclusions Zinc deficiency is associated with compromised swallowing function in older adults patients with impaired general functions. Oral zinc supplementation can alleviate dysphagia in older adults patients with zinc deficiency even though this is a retrospective study. Further study will be needed to confirm this positive effect.

Cirrhosis of liver is one of the common medical problem in daily clinical practice and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Zinc is an essential trace elements for human and plays in many biological roles in the body. Among them, zinc deficiency is thought to be involved in metabolism of ammonia and causes hyperammonia that worsen hepatic encephalopathy. This study aimed to find out the severity of cirrhosis of liver was by Child Turcotte Pugh score and to investigate the associations between serum zinc level and severity of cirrhosis. A hospital-based cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 78 patients with different underlying causes of cirrhosis of liver at the Medical Units of Yangon General Hospital and Yangon Specialty Hospital. Among the study population, Child grade A was found to be 28.21%, Child grade B was 30.77% and Child grade C was 41.03%. Regarding result of serum zinc level, 62.8% were low level, 28.2% were within normal level and 8.9% were high level. Mean value of serum zinc level in grade A was 0.68 mg/l, grade B was 0.54 mg/l and grade C was 0.48 mg/l (p=0.00). It was found out that there was a high prevalence of zinc deficiency in severe cirrhotic patients. The zinc level was significantly lowest among patients with Child-Pugh C as compare to those with Child-Pugh B and C. Severity of zinc deficiency should be requested for supplementation therapy in cirrhotic patients as to prevent complications such as hepatic encephalopathy, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure. Screening for zinc deficiency may need in these patients with more advanced cirrhosis because it seems to be a marker of advanced liver disease and it can be deducted that awareness of serum zinc level among cirrhotic patients is very important in clinical practice.
