In the context of cross-cultural mediation in translation the problem of switching between different conceptual and linguistic worldviews is of particular interest. The present paper suggests that this switching should be seen as switching between different linguacultural roles, i.e. the roles of members of the source and target cultures. The aim of this article is to identify and describe the psychological resources, processes and mechanisms involved in taking the role of a member of a different culture. Based on the analysis of relevant literature the following psychological resources required for taking a different linguacultural role have been identified: a) empathy; b) agency; c) creativity; d) reflection; e) willingness to invest in taking a new role. The practical value of the present paper is determined by the fact that a better understanding of the above-mentioned psychological resources, processes and mechanisms can enable improvements in teaching translation and foreign languages to trainee translators by making students’ learning activity more conscious, purposeful and professionally-oriented. Practical recommendations for implementing the proposed ideas are provided.

The article presents the overview of the ways in which cross-cultural communication was carried out during the lend-lease supplies via the Arctic convoys. It reflects on the importance of non-professional translation and cross-cultural mediation in such spheres as medicine, hospitality, transport, customs, etc. The skills of a professional translator are viewed in contrast to those necessary for successful linguistic mediation. The authors emphasise the role of international seamen's clubs in the establishment of contacts between the represantatives of different nationalites. Much of the information provided in the article has never been published before as it was obtained in the state archives of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk, some of which have been open for research in recent years. A number of documents concerning details of cross-cultural mediation during the period of the Arctic convoys were lost or destroyed during the Great Patriotic War, so some information can be obtained only from the participants of the events of that period who are not numerous nowadays.

The article deals with the issues related to the content of one of the higher linguistic functions of a linguistic personality — the argumentative function of language, without which it is impossible for a cognizing person to find an adequate information picture of the world. Besides, the argumentative function of language serves the purposes of forming a number of meta-disciplinary competences of a personality from the block of cognitive universal educational actions: the ability to argue own opinion, to establish cause-and-effect relations, to build logical chains of reasoning, to find contradictions, to draw conclusions of different degree of generalization, etc., directly connected with the development of a person’s ability to critical perception of the surrounding reality — an important component of the personal information security system. As a result of an updated view of the concept of a language personality, as well as an analysis of the content and place assigned to the argumentative function of language in the hierarchy of language functions, the conclusion was made about its increasing role in the life of modern man and about the need to restructure the learning process in order to increase the authority and role of the native language in the education of modern language personality. Practical recommendations have been proposed to create conditions to intellectualize the native and foreign languages in school education by strengthening the argumentative component while developing students’ language competence.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how translation activities influence knowledge transfer across cultures in Chinese multinational enterprises (MNEs). Although translation is recognized as a critical instrument for MNEs to enhance cross-national knowledge flow, scholars have not put much emphasis on the importance of translation in international business research. Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes a novel hierarchical framework to delineate the five major boundary-spanning functions regarding translation for knowledge transfer in China (i.e. exchanging, linking, manipulating, facilitating and intervening). Due to the paucity of relevant literature, the authors used exploratory case studies investigating two large Chinese MNEs to illustrate how individuals as boundary spanners handle the translation requirements associated with cross-cultural knowledge transmission within a MNE’s business network. The data coding approach was used to examine the assumed model. Findings – The findings demonstrate that translators indeed play a vital role in cross-border knowledge exchanging, linking people with crucial knowledge, manipulating the flow of knowledge for protecting confidentiality, facilitating the cross-cultural interaction of various knowledge sources and intervening to prevent the occurrence of misunderstanding in MNE contexts. The authors also reveal how translators overcome the three constraints of language interpretation concerning knowledge transfer (i.e. lack of equivalence, cultural interference and ambiguity). The proposed research framework was fully supported. Research limitations/implications – The results provide insightful implications for MNEs to treat translation as a significant “re-codification” rather than a mundane task. Knowledge transfer within MNEs involves not only knowledge regarding products, technology and operations but also involves “whole organizations” including business models, organizational visions, missions and strategies. Originality/value – The main value of this paper is to propose a novel model regarding the role of translation in cross-cultural knowledge transfer in China. Language is a container of contexts; the translation procedure in MNEs is actually dynamic and contingent in nature and can be seen as an act of knowledge creation per se.

This empirical case study has two objectives. First, it reports on the pedagogical applicability and practicability of proverbs in teaching Arabic language and culture at the novice level and up according to guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Second, it examines how the use of proverbs in teaching inspires active learning and stimulates students’ intercultural perception. The empirical activities presented in this article demonstrate that the constructive integration of Arabic proverbs in language teaching helps improve learners’ linguistic competency, intercultural awareness, and cross-cultural communication. The article also shows that proverbs constitute an important repository of authentic materials that can provide educators with new instructional ideas and strategies in teaching Arabic as a foreign or second language. The study’s findings also mirror ongoing pedagogical discussions about teaching Arabic as a foreign and strategic language. Such is the case with approaches and theories, textbooks, the role of culture in learning, the use of authentic materials, and Arabic diglossic disposition.

Abstract. The current study investigated the associations of psychological resources, social comparisons, and temporal comparisons with general wellbeing. The sample included 142 community participants (47.9% men; age range 23–83 years), who compared themselves with others, and with their younger selves, on eight dimensions (e.g., physical health, resilience). They also completed questionnaires assessing psychological resources of mastery and self-esteem, and three components of subjective wellbeing: life satisfaction and negative and positive affect. The main results showed that high levels of psychological resources contributed to wellbeing, with self-enhancing social and temporal comparisons moderating the effects of resources on certain wellbeing components. Specifically, under low levels of mastery or self-esteem self-enhancing social or temporal comparisons were related to either higher life satisfaction or positive affect. The results highlight the role of resources and comparisons in promoting people’s wellbeing, and suggest that self-enhancing comparisons function as cognitive coping mechanisms when psychological resources are low.
