The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the role Rousseau’s doctrine of general will played in the thought and writings of Gilbert Keith Chesterton. The article begins with the characterization of the doctrine of general will as understood by Rousseau. Then, an overview of the existing critique of Chesterton’s heritage and what it had (or did not have to) to say about the matter in question is conducted. Next, the fact that Chesterton accepted the doctrine of general will is demonstrated by means of textual analysis. The paper ends with a section devoted to drawing some practical conclusions from the results of the analysis, with special stress laid on the fact that acknowledging the role the doctrine of general will played in Chesterton’s thought might not only serve as a “hermeneutical key” to the more controversial of his ideas (his democratism and his alleged anti-Semitism taken as examples), but also serve as the means to change the overall perception of him as a political thinker from a Catholic integrist to a Catholic pluralist.

The interactivity element in video games allows the process of delivering narration through words and actions taken by the game player. The diversity of game design in delivering stories leads to a debate between ludology (game-centered) and narratology (narrative-centered). Ludology perceives game as ‘sets of rules’ because game itself is a medium that is made up of rules. On the other hand, narratology views game in terms of the narrative resulted from the rules. Narratology tends to reduce the peculiarity of the medium because it does not take game rules into account, while ludology ignores the narrative elements. However, in recent times, games combine aspects of gameplay and narration to form an interactive narrative. One video game that uses such combination is Bioshock (2007). The interactivity elements in this game are not only for conveying the story, but also for allowing players’ participation to determine the resolution of the story through the player’s interaction with the character named Little Sister. Gameplay-wise, Little Sister acts as one of the main resources that helps players complete the game. Narrative-wise, Little Sister who is a chimera (a combination between animal and human) is a representation of technological advancement. Positioned as resource both in the gameplay and the narration, the game player’s treatment toward Little Sister implies ethical and moral consequences. For these reasons, this article implements textual analysis to discuss the characterization of Little Sisters displayed in the gameplay and the narration that leads to the ethical and morality issues lies in biotechnology.

This paper explores John Commons’s views toward Jews in order to assess whether his published writings contain assertions that today would be stigmatized as anti-Semitic. The evidence we provide shows that Commons’s racial characterization of Jews was framed within a broad and indiscriminate xenophobic framework. With other leading Progressive Era social scientists, in fact, Commons shared the idea that the new immigration from eastern and southern Europe would increase competition in the labor market, drive down wages, and lead Anglo-Saxon men and women to have fewer children, since they would not want them to compete with those who survive on less. Within this general xenophobic context, Commons developed assertions regarding immigrant Jews that show traces of explicit anti-Semitic accusations.

Abstract Motivated by works on extension sets in standard domains, we introduce a notion of the Carathéodory set that seems better suited for the methods used in proofs of results on characterization of extension sets. A special stress is put on a class of two-dimensional submanifolds in the tridisc that not only turns out to be Carathéodory but also provides examples of two-dimensional domains for which the celebrated Lempert Theorem holds. Additionally, a recently introduced notion of universal sets for the Carathéodory extremal problem is studied and new results on domains admitting (no) finite universal sets are given.

The present study pursues the primaeval customs of patriarchy and its tormenting effects happening in the lives of women in Pakistan. The purpose of this research is to explore how patriarchal traditions, class differences, and their triple marginalization in the novel played chaos in the lives of females. Though the existing status of women is traditionally much better than that of women in the West but still they are not empowered and are deprived of basic rights. GC Spivak provides the theoretical foundations for this research through her theory, can the subaltern speak (1988). This research is based on qualitative textual analysis. The present study explores the status of women in Pakistan through the characterization of various female characters in the novel. This study concludes that they are portrayed as compliant and deserted beings deprived of every kind of individualism.

In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed the Ifugao epic hudhud as one of the 19 masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. This study aims to promote greater understanding and of appreciation, and interest in the epics, highest form of oral literature. The analysis is anchored on E. Arsenio Manuel’s theory of the Philippine ethno-epic. A descriptive-qualitative method was used in this study. Immersion, observation and random informal interviews in Ifugao (Kiangan, Asipulo and Lagawe) were employed in gathering and validating data. The narrative structure and characterization of the epic heroes were determined through textual analysis. A contextualist approach in the analysis of the text was utilized to validate the identified Ifugao culture that is still practiced today. The epic reveals the beauty and legacy of the great ancestors of the highland that need to be protected and preserved. This study helps in the preservation of the sacredness of the tradition. Likewise, it also proves that the hudhud is not just used as mere tourist attraction of the local government units and Department of Tourism for economic growth in the hudhud areas. It will also attract more scholars, local and international, to understand and preserve the rich and dying tradition. Keywords – Literature, hudhud, Ifugao socio-political culture, descriptive-qualitative method/textual analysis, Philippines

Palabras clave: revistas-derecho-interdisciplina The law in law reviews: renovation and conjunctions of “Law and” in No Hay Derecho (1990-1995) Abstract: Although journals and magazines have become a productive object of study in the humanities and social sciences, in the field of law they remain under explored. This paper analyses an independent journal of law edited and published in Buenos Aires between 1990 and 1995: revista "No Hay Derecho”. In the first section, I propose a characterization of the journal’s project as one of critical renovation, fundamentally through a textual analysis. Then, I focus on one of the most salient dimensions of that renovation: the impulse towards thinking the law in conjunction with other objects and disciplines. Key Words: journals-law-interdiscipline

Mycobacteriophage R1 was originally isolated from a lysogenic culture of M. butyricum. The virus was propagated on a leucine-requiring derivative of M. smegmatis, 607 leu−, isolated by nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis of typestrain ATCC 607. Growth was accomplished in a minimal medium containing glycerol and glucose as carbon source and enriched by the addition of 80 μg/ ml L-leucine. Bacteria in early logarithmic growth phase were infected with virus at a multiplicity of 5, and incubated with aeration for 8 hours. The partially lysed suspension was diluted 1:10 in growth medium and incubated for a further 8 hours. This permitted stationary phase cells to re-enter logarithmic growth and resulted in complete lysis of the culture.

Amorphous materials are of current interest due to their desirable mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties. Furthermore, crystallizing amorphous alloys provides an avenue for discerning sequential and competitive phases thus allowing access to otherwise inaccessible crystalline structures. Previous studies have shown the benefits of using AEM to determine crystal structures and compositions of partially crystallized alloys. The present paper will discuss the AEM characterization of crystallized Cu-Ti and Ni-Ti amorphous films.Cu60Ti40: The amorphous alloy Cu60Ti40, when continuously heated, forms a simple intermediate, macrocrystalline phase which then transforms to the ordered, equilibrium Cu3Ti2 phase. However, contrary to what one would expect from kinetic considerations, isothermal annealing below the isochronal crystallization temperature results in direct nucleation and growth of Cu3Ti2 from the amorphous matrix.
