Marcel Reich-Ranicki, the German literary critic, recalls in hisrecent memoirs that at age ten, when he set out from his small townin Poland, his teacher said with tears in her eyes, “Mein Sohn, Dufährst in das Land der Kultur.” Elias Canetti recalled in the first volumeof his memoir—The Tongue Set Free—how when he was age eight,his mother, recently widowed, found fulfillment at the Burgtheaterand left Manchester to take up residence in Vienna. Was it just themagic of the German language that transported these Jews and madeliterary overachievers of their children? A vision of metropolitan cultureand assimilation? Culture was “the way ‘in,’” as Louis Spitzerputs it in his book on marginality, Lives in Between.

One of the most fascinating memoirs to appear in recent years is that of Elias Canetti, recipient of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Literature. his three-volume spiritual and intellectual autobiography is a complex and insightful rendering of his personal background and his creative development as a novelist, philosopher, and social critic. However, Canetti's autobiography is much more than a compelling account of the development of a great artist – it is a portrait of the tragic character of an entire era that witnessed the destruction of cultures and the way of life o many Jewish communities throughout Europe.

Introduction. The article discusses the poetic innovations, formal and stylistic peculiarities in the work of the talented poet Usmon Kuchkor. The poet's “muqarnas” are analyzed. The second half of the twentieth century and the period of independence have a special significance with Uzbek poetry, its charm, new tones and visual features. Methodological and formal research, the renewal of artistic thinking, the human heart and spiritual experiences, the vivid depiction of emotions form the basis of this poetry. In this, the importance of artistic thinking in particular is immeasurable. As the literary critic N. Rakhmonov noted: "The multifaceted and multilayered phenomenon - the concept of artistic thinking is a specific product of philosophical, ethical and political views, manifested in the way of thinking of the artist" [7,4]. The paper explores the genre of scarcely studied play by Russian minor writer Alexei V. Timofeev (1812-1883) Rome and Carthage (1837). Timofeev’s contemporary literary critic Osip Senkovskii treated like poet’s failure his use of romantic techniques in the play on ancient plot. Taking into account this opinion the paper analyzes the paratextual elements in the play, the way of describing characters, the division of the play into acts, the connection of the plot events with historical facts. The paper argues that the play approaches the kind of romantic drama, which the author suggests to call “historical fantasy” Its main feature is the coexisting in the plot mythology and religious tradition, on the one hand, and historical events, on the other, the heroes of historical chronicles and the heroes of folk legends, belief in miracles and rationalism. The goal of historical fantasy is to produce a generalized image of the time, to convey the spirit of the epoch while the dramatic action takes a secondary place. Samples of the genre were given in the works of Alexander A. Shakhovskoi, Alexander I. Gertsen, Apollon N. Maikov. Timofeev’s play was just in the way to this kind of drama.

Abstract This article presents the results of a case study conducted in Bó’áo, a small town on Hǎinán Island currently undergoing rapid transformation. Triggered by the founding of the Boao Forum for Asia, an unknown fishing village has turned into an important location for conferences and tourism. On the basis of Grounded Theory this case study focuses on migrant workers from mainland China, using qualitative semi-structured interviews in order to explore the causes behind this migration influx to Bó’áo. In addition, this paper investigates the way these migrants organise their lives in this small town by raising the question of social integration within the local society—a topic largely neglected in the general academic discourse in and on China. The results of this study show that the level of education determines both reasons for migration as well as the way the migrant workers organise their everyday lives and the way in which they interact with locals. This paper also scrutinises common concepts of integration, e.g. the need to acquire the language spoken by the majority.

The article is devoted to the book Letters from the War, 1941-1945 [Pis’ma s voyny. 1941-1945], which comprises 139 letters written by A. Tvardovsky to his wife while he was on the front lines. The letters offer a sequence of insights into the poet’s soul affected by the violence of yet another whirlwind of history. They reveal a lot about the poet’s personality and creative method. These 139 letters are a testimony of a great love as well as creativity in times of war. The paper has a very straightforward plot: the author examines the letters in chronological order, starting with the first one, written in 1941, all the way to the last one, dated 1945. The research cites other resources, including ancient Indian poetry, Homer’s Odyssey, a story by a contemporary journalist about the life of evacuees (famous writers) in the small town of Chistopol, A. Kondratovich’ book Aleksandr Tvardovsky, Three Soldiers by J. Dos Passos, A. Bek’s reminiscences, and V. Akatkin’s article A. T. Tvardovsky’s Finnish Sketches in the Dialogue of Epochs [Finskie zapisi A. T. Tvardovskogo v dialoge vremen]. What sets this paper apart from other studies is the use of personal observations and insights collected by the author during his service in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Chapter 2 will continue to chart the changes observed in Chapter 1, using examples of a variety of mushā‘irahs, including relatively small ones held in provincial towns and larger ones held in cities in conjunction with political rallies and conferences. The second chapter will look at the way in which the space changed in the twentieth century by looking at a mushā‘irah in a small town in north India and then larger political mushā‘irahs in the 1930s.

The threads binding the poetry of Vladimir Vysotsky with Russian and foreign literature have a diverse character – some convergences, similarities of his works to those of other authors can be identifi ed in the content, the subject, and the metre of the poems. Some of the literary associations are easily detectable for any recipient, others are more diffi cult to fi nd. The article focuses on the identifi ed links between the works of Vysotsky and those of foreign authors such as Pierre-Jean de Béranger, Robert Burns, and Bertolt Brecht. The convergences observed between Vysotsky’s and de Béranger’s poems, in the subject, form, and metre, indicate the affi nity of the way of thinking and ideals, as well as both poets’ love of freedom, despite the 150 year gap between their birth dates. The presented links with literature of the 18th, 19th, and 20th century widen the opportunities for interpreting the works of Vladimir Vysotsky.

In this issue we are starting to publish the research paper presented by V.I. Dubinskiy. The author aims at demonstrating non-verbal means of communi- cation in the German language as well as showing the way they are used in everyday life and the specifics of teaching them further cross-cultural communication with Germans. Knowing non-verbal means of communication typical of native speakers means broadening the general knowledge of the student of the language and developing an active communicative approach to speech interaction.

We may reflect on language in different ways. There is the way familiar to analytical philosophers. That may take different forms, but most of them are strikingly different from the way of someone like Elias Canetti or F. R. Leavis, whose thought is shaped by their concern with literature. In the latter case language appears as an essentially human phenomenon, not because it is limited to the species Homo sapiens, but because it is essentially connected with the culture and histories of peoples, whose plurality is underdetermined by any elaboration on the nature and environmental conditions of Homo sapiens. It is rare to find analytical philosophers of language for whom that is important or who have tried even to sketch the kind of importance it may have. That is because they assume that it is not important to language as such (to what makes something language) but only to the sophisticated use of language in poetry or literature. They have tended to misunderstand the sense in which a language such as English is a natural language.
