Workforce demand for neurosurgeons in the United States of America: a 13-year retrospective study

Object. The workforce demand for neurosurgeons was quantified by a review and an analysis of journal recruitment advertisements published over the past 13 years.Methods. A retrospective analysis of recruitment advertisements from July 1985 through June 1998 was performed by examining issues of the Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery. Advertisement information that appeared in each journal during the last 3 years was collected from alternating months (July to May); information that appeared prior to that time was collected from alternating recruitment years back to 1985. The authors examined the following workforce parameters: practice venue, subspecialization, and practice size.They found no significant decrease in neurosurgical recruitment advertisements. There was an average of 102.7 ± 22.4 (standard deviation) advertised positions per year during the most recent 3 years compared with 92.6 ± 17.9 advertised positions per year during the preceding decade. Similarly, there has been no decline in advertised positions either in academic (33 ± 6.1/year for the most recent 3 years compared with 32.8 ± 5.9/year for 1985–1995) or private practice (69.7 ± 21.6/year for the most recent 3 years compared with 59.8 ± 13.4/year for 1985–1995). A shift in demand toward subspecialty neurosurgery was observed. During the past 3 years, 31.2 ± 5.9% of advertised positions called for subspecialty expertise, compared with 18.5 ± 2.8% for the preceding decade (p < 0.05). The largest number of subspecialty advertisements designated positions for spine and pediatric neurosurgeons. Private practice advertisements increasingly sought to add neurosurgeons to group practices.Conclusions. Contrary to previous reports and a prevailing myth, our data show no decrease in workforce demand for neurosurgeons in the United States over the past 3 years compared with the prior decade. A shift toward subspecialist recruitment, particularly for spine neurosurgeons, has been demonstrated in both academic and private practice venues.

There were significant increases in resistance to older drugs, including ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline, which were most common inSalmonella entericaserotype Typhimurium. An increase in multidrug resistance was observed for each decade since the 1950s. These data help show howSalmonellaevolved over the past 6 decades, after the introduction of new antimicrobial agents.

Object. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the US neurosurgery workforce by reviewing journal recruitment advertisements published during the past 10 years. Methods. The number of available academic and private neurosurgical staff positions was determined based on recruitment advertisements in the Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery for the 10-year period from 1994 to 2003. Advertisements were evaluated for practice venue, subspecialization, and location. The numbers of active neurosurgeons and graduating residents also were reviewed. The number of advertised neurosurgical positions increased from 141.6 ± 38.2 per year from 1994 through 1998 to 282.4 ± 13.6 per year from 1999 through 2003 (mean ± standard deviation, p < 0.05). The mean number of academic positions increased from 50.6 ± 11.1 to 95 ± 17.5 (p <0.05), and the mean number of private positions rose from 91 ± 30.4 to 187.4 ± 6.8 (p <0.05). Subspecialty positions represented a mean of only 15.6 ± 5% per year during the first time period and 18.8 ± 3% per year in the second period (p = 0.22), and therefore the majority of positions advertised continued to be those for generalists. The number of practicing neurosurgeons declined after 1998, and by 2002 it was less than it had been in 1991. The numbers of incoming and matriculating residents during the study period were static. Conclusions. The number of recruitment advertisements for neurosurgeons during the last 5 years has increased significantly, concomitant with a severe decline in the number of active neurosurgeons and a static supply of residents.

PurposeAs an industry, sport business (SB) has seen significant growth since the early 2000s. Concurrently, the number of postsecondary sport management programs has also expanded dramatically. However, there remain concerns about whether these programs are meeting the demands of both employers and graduates. To address these concerns, this study examines the credential and competency demands of the SB labor market in the United States.Design/methodology/approachResearchers conducted an analysis using a broad sample of employment postings (N = 613) for SB positions from two different years, 2008 and 2018.FindingsResults support that a complex set of SB qualifications exist, and the credentials and competencies included in SB employment postings have evolved over the past decade.Originality/valueA noteworthy finding is that meta-skills are found to be particularly important for employability, including items such as communication, emotional intelligence and analytical thinking and adaptability.

PurposeThis article details a qualitative descriptive case study of affective factors of effective decision-making of one local government organization in the United States of America. The specific problem was that many elected American local government representatives lack effective decision-making strategies. This research focus indicated a lack of qualitative research on the real-world experience of factors that were taken into consideration during decision-making within American local government organizations.Design/methodology/approachUsing a local government organization in southwest Illinois, elected representatives were interviewed and observed. The interviews and observations surfaced how the representatives made decisions. Data were analyzed using manual coding and theming to determine themes and patterns.FindingsThe results produced six themes about factors, including emotional intelligence, which impacted decision-making. They are: (1) remembering the past, (2) communication and respect, (3) spurring economic growth and development, (4) fairness, (5) recognizing and removing emotions and bias and (6) accountability.Research limitations/implicationsBeing a single case study, this research is limited in generalization. The research was limited to the identification of current, real-world experience of elected local government representatives.Practical implicationsThe findings of this research can be used to create more effective decision-making practices for local government organizations of similar size.Originality/valueThis is the first study to review, in-depth, the decision-making and emotional intelligence factors of local government organizations in the United States of America. The conceptual background, discussion, implications to local government organizations, limitations and recommendations for future studies are discussed.

The past session of Parliament has witnessed the passing of an Act for the regulation of Life Assurance Companies in the United Kingdom, which, while introducing great changes in the law, still stops very far short of the system of legislation which has been for several years in operation in a few of the United States of America, and which is warmly approved of and urgently recommended for adoption by some persons in this country. The present may therefore be considered a fitting time for reviewing what has been done and considering whether any further legislation is desirable, and if any, of what nature it should be.
