Doogh is an Iranian drink produced from yoghurt. Swelling is an undesirable change of Doogh, usually caused by Kluyveromyces marxianus. The aim of this study was the investigation of the effect of the thermosonication process on Kluyveromyces marxianus survival as well as the determination of the impact of this process on other quality parameters (viscosity and serum separation). For this reason, Kluyveromyces marxianus (about 105 cells per milliliter) inoculated into Doogh samples, thereafter samples being exposed to various thermosonication process conditions. Results showed that the thermosonication operation resulted in the reduction of the yeast population of Doogh samples (p <0.05). The lowest yeast population was observed in the sample subjected to acoustic density=1w/ml, T= 60°C and t=30min (1.7±0.01CFU/ml). Other operation conditions also had impact on yeast survival (p <0.05). Thermosonication also had significant effects on the viscosity of the Doogh samples. Serum separation of samples was also measured and observation implied changing serum separation magnitude between different samples in comparison with the control sample (p <0.05).

The paper presents the results of research on the environmental impact of sewage ponds serving the city of Kostanay (Kazakhstan). The scope of the research included the determination of basic quality parameters of raw and treated wastewater, an analysis of the chemical composition of groundwater in the vicinity of sewage ponds, and the analysis of the water quality of the Tobol River. The obtained results indicate that sewage from storage ponds, infiltrating into the ground, caused groundwater pollution in the area of about 100 km2 around the reservoirs. Due to the fact that the groundwater aquifer in the vicinity of sewage ponds feeds the Tobol River, it also affects water quality in the river, which does not meet the requirements for most of the analyzed parameters.

Mining activities, in combination with accelerated urbanization growth and climate change, constitutes a major challenge for creating a sustainable development. Thus, the monitoring and assessment of mining effect is mandatory in understanding the impact on the primary physico-chemical characteristics of an environment. In this context, the paper presents the evolution of micro- and macro- nutrients in water, soil and sediment from two industrial areas from Romania (Copșa Mică industrial platform and Baia Sprie mining zone), in order to assess the impact of pollutants on ecosystems. Physico-chemical (pH, NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, TN, TP), base cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K) and micronutrients (Fe, Mn and Zn) have been analyzed in order to evaluate the quality of the environment. For some of the analyzed soils, the concentration of Zn, Mn and Fe exceeded the maximum permissible limits (MPL) imposed by the Romanian legislation, falling within the limit for Alert Thresholds for less sensitive soils. The correlation analysis on water quality parameters revealed that all parameters are more or less correlated with each other Person’s Correlation matrix. Overall, our results demonstrated that the knowledge of the physico-chemical regime of an environment is of great value in the determination of its productivity, usefulness and other characteristics which can facilitate further vegetation restoration and reconstruction and a sustainable development of the ecological environment in a polluted area.

This study evaluated the impact of the level of supplementation of Moringa oleifera leaves on the nutritional (proximate, mineral and vitamin content) as well as on the antioxidant capacities of smoothies made from a blend of pineapple, banana and apple. The beverage (smoothies) were supplemented with Moringa oleifera leaves at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% levels and evaluated for proximate, antioxidant (ferric reducing antioxidant power, FRAP and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picryhydrazy, DPPH), mineral, vitamin, physicochemical and quality acceptability. The results showed that the moisture content of the beverage ranged between 49.24 – 78.62%, total ash: 1.01 – 9.71, crude fiber: 5.14 – 9.39%, crude fat: 0.72 – 1.86%, crude protein: 5.47 – 19.37% and carbohydrate: 3.65 – 16.99%. Calcium (12.03 -15.53) and potassium (17.22 -25.38) were the predominant mineral elements when compared to magnesium (1.51 – 3.05) mg/L. The vitamin contents ranged between 2.5 – 10.8 and 0.15 – 0.93 mg/L for vitamin C and E, respectively. Total phenolic contents ranged between 4.68 – 6.18 mg/ml while the total flavonoid contents ranged between 0.01 – 0.14 mg/ml. The radical scavenging abilities (DPPH) of the samples ranged between 16.05 – 88.77% while the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) ranged between 0.38 – 7.36 mg/ml. The brix values showed high sugar contents (15 – 18%) while the pH results showed that the sample was almost neutral at a range between 6.3 and 6.5. The overall quality (sensory) acceptability of the different quality parameters evaluated indicated that the control sample was more preferred. While supplementation with Moringa oleifera leaves significantly affected the sensory parameters, its addition nevertheless offers a potential avenue to obtain additional nutrients besides its improved antioxidative properties.

In this study, we assessed the content of chlorophyllaandb, β-carotene and lutein in seeds of carrot, celery, dill, parsley and parsnip commercial varieties by spectrophotometric method. It was determined that the content of chlorophyllawas higher than chlorophyllband both differed significantly between plant species and varieties. The highest amounts of chlorophylla, chlorophyllb, β-carotene and lutein were detected in parsley “Olomoucka dlouha”. The lowest amounts of chlorophylla, chlorophyllb, β-carotene and no lutein were detected in celery “Nuget”, however, very low amount of lutein was detected in the parsley cultivars “Atika” and “Orbis”. The content of β-carotene was higher than that of lutein in most varieties. The individual pigment contents were compared to seed quality parameters such as standard laboratory germination and seedling emergence. Negative correlation between energy of germination and pigments and positive correlation between seedling emergence and pigments in the parsnip and parsley varieties was observed. Determination the content of pigments and correlations observed the possibility to use spectrophotometry to evaluate the pigments present in the seeds as an indicator of seed quality.

Assessing of the quality parameters of the blade manufacture, which can affect their operational performance, is an important step in determining the causes of turbine blade destruction. Manufacturing defects, despite their great diversity, tend to be stress concentrators. Apart from the defects listed in the specifications to be avoided upon blade manufacturing, we mean also various kinds of defects identified as concentrators that contribute to the destruction of the blades in operation. Assessment of the blade quality suggests identification and analysis of the defects, as well as determination of the technological stage at which they have been formed. For cooled turbine blades this is the foundry stage of their manufacture. Studies of the blades damaged in operation, revealed that despite the control and rejection of blades in the manufacture, the materials of the turbine blades installed on aircraft engines, contain casting defects. The revealed casting defects are shown to affect the strength characteristics and durability of turbine blades and contribute to their destruction through fatigue fracture in operation. The special features of the quality characteristics of the single-crystal turbine blades, affecting their performance, and defects that contribute to their destruction in operation are highlighted. The necessity of improving the valuation, standardization and quality control both at the stages of design and manufacture of blades is shown.

Abstract Investigations into some unexploited oleaginous seeds is imperative to supplement existing ones and boost supply of vegetable oil (VO). This work determined the impact of pre-treatment on some quality attributes of VO expressed from Pentaclethra macrophylla kernels using an oil expeller. Pre-treatment variables include Moisture Content (Mc), Roasting Temperature (RT), and Roasting Time (Rt) while quality parameters include pH, Iron content (IC), Acid Value (Av), Peroxide Value (Pv) and Saponification value (Sv). Standard procedures were followed in determination of oil quality and values obtained were compared with acceptable levels for VO. Optimum condition (8%db, 11.7 min Rt and 59.3oC RT) gave 5.8 pH, 0.044 mg/kg IC, 2.3 mgKOH/g AV, and 7 ml/g PV. The oil quality attributes conforms to acceptable levels for edible oils and was influenced by pre-treatment. The models developed to predict the relationships between pre-treatment and quality attributes are valid (p < 0.05).
