This article aims to introduce the Extended Case Method (ECM) as an approach to qualitative social research. As an approach, the ECM rooted in the ethnography approach in the anthropological tradition and developed in the sociological tradition research. With reference to Michael Buroway (1998) as a developer of ECM and some articles that used ECM as a method, this paper outlines the basic concepts of ECM, their advantages and infirmity, and the application of theories in social research by using ECM. As an extended case, there are four aspects that extend on ECM, namely intervention, processes, structuration, and reconstruction (theory). The advantage of ECM is their four extending. Rather than the infirmity of ECM rooted from their advantage, namely domination, silencing, objectification, and normalization. The use of theory in ECM was carried out from the beginning to the end of the study. Base on their characteristics, ECM very feasible to use to understanding borderless society and ambiguity of case study on research of social science in general, and ethnography especially.

Case study researchers use diverse methods to select their cases, a matter that has elicited considerable comment and no little consternation. Of all these methods, perhaps the most controversial is the crucial-case method, first proposed by Harry Eckstein several decades ago. Since Eckstein’s influential essay, the crucial-case approach has been used in a multitude of studies across several social science disciplines and has come to be recognized as a staple of the case study method. Yet the idea of any single case playing a crucial (or critical) role is not widely accepted. In this article, the method of the crucial case is explored, and a limited defense (somewhat less expansive than that envisioned by Eckstein) of that method is undertaken. A second method of case-selection, closely associated with the logic of the crucial case, is introduced: the pathway case.

O presente trabalho trata de uma pesquisa social qualitativa, realizada em um empreendimento econômico solidário de catadores de materiais recicláveis, na cidade de Lavras, Minas Gerais. O objetivo do estudo consiste em compreender os efeitos das tensões entre as racionalidades substantiva e instrumental na gestão da ACAMAR (Associação de Catadores de Materiais Recicláveis de Lavras). Para a coleta de dados foram utilizadas técnicas de pesquisa documental, observação participante e entrevista semiestruturada. As análises ocorreram em quatro momentos: investigação de cada elemento constitutivo de ação substantiva e instrumental; mapeamento dos indicadores predominantes; identificação das tensões existentes; e compreensão dos efeitos das tensões no cotidiano organizacional e na gestão. Os resultados alcançados mostraram que a maioria das ações administrativas da ACAMAR são subsidiadas tanto pela lógica substantiva quanto pela lógica instrumental e, por conseguinte, as tensões entre elas são frequentes no cotidiano do empreendimento e nos processos de gestão. Mostrou-se também que os catadores lidam com a tensão na ACAMAR de duas formas: nada fazem a respeito, na medida em que não reconhecem sua existência; ou, ao reconhecerem sua existência tentam eliminá-la, porque a consideram indesejável. Portanto, em razão dessa forma na qual as tensões são encaradas pelos associados, o ambiente interno da Associação é marcado, mesmo com traços de substantividade por atritos, apatia, insatisfação, sentimento de não realização humana e não melhoria do êxito produtivo. Tension between rationalities: case study of the association of collectors of recyclable materials of Lavras (ACAMAR) Abstract The present work dealswith a qualitative social research, carried out in a solidary economic enterprise of recyclable material collectors, in the city of Lavras, Minas Gerais. The aim of the study is to understand the effects of tensionsbetween substantive and instrumental rationalities in the management of ACAMAR (Associação de Catadores de Materiais Recicláveis de Lavras). For data collection, documentary research techniques, participant observation and semi-structured interviews were used. The analyzes took place in four moments: analysis of each constitutive element of substantive and instrumental action; mapping of the predominant indicators; identification of existing tensions; and understanding the effects of tensions on organizational and management daily life. The results achieved showed that most of ACAMAR's administrative actions are subsidized by both substantive and instrumental logic and, therefore, tensions between them are frequent in the daily life of the enterprise and in the management processes. It was also shown that waste pickers deal with the tension at ACAMAR in two ways: they do nothing about it, insofar as they do not recognize its existence, or when they recognize its existence, they try to eliminate it, because they consider it undesirable. Therefore, due to the way in which tensions are faced by members, the internal environment of the Association is marked despite the traces of substantivity by friction, apathy, dissatisfaction, a feeling of human lack of fulfillment and an improvement in productive success. This article distinguishes between ‘measurement’ and ‘calibration’. It is organized around the distinction between measurement and calibration. The main message of this article is that fuzzy sets, unlike conventional variables, must be calibrated. It also argues that fuzzy sets provide a middle path between quantitative and qualitative measurement. It explores the common measurement practices in quantitative and qualitative social research. It then further demonstrates that fuzzy sets resonate with both the measurement concerns of qualitative researchers, where the goal often is to recognize between relevant and irrelevant variation, and the measurement concerns of quantitative researchers, where the goal is the precise placement of cases relative to each other. Current practices in quantitative social science undercut serious attention to calibration. Set-theoretic analysis without careful calibration of set membership is an exercise in futility.

Abstract Sociocultural developmental psychology can drive new directions in gadgetry science. We use autobiographical memory, a compound capacity incorporating episodic memory, as a case study. Autobiographical memory emerges late in development, supported by interactions with parents. Intervention research highlights the causal influence of these interactions, whereas cross-cultural research demonstrates culturally determined diversity. Different patterns of inheritance are discussed.

In view of certain socio-cultural and economic meta-processes, workforce diversity or diversity management become an increasingly important entrepreneurial success factor. Yet, the scholarly examination of diversity in the tourism and hospitality sector is still in its infancy; a fact that applies to qualitative studies in particular. This paper addresses the perception of diversity and diversity management within one of the world’s leading aviation corporations, the Lufthansa Group. Following the methodological principles of qualitative social research, this study reports the results of a survey of Lufthansa flight attendants, a stakeholder group that interacts like no other in the area of overlap between the corporation and its customers. Specifically, the survey focuses on Lufthansa’s diversity strategy – based on the principle of ‘value creation through appreciation’ – and how it is perceived by representatives of the cabin crew, in an attempt to identify potential conflicts and prejudices that may arise in the face of employee heterogeneity.

Institutions from basic to higher education in Mexico that offer courses of English as a Foreign Language rely heavily on the administering of assessment, usually a formal type of assessment. However, the literature shows how important it is the involvement of other types of assessment in the classroom for effective language learning to take place. For instance, assessment for learning, which consist of a continuous assessment where learners receive feedback so greater learning occurs, what is more, it enables teachers to modify their teaching ways as they reflect on the learners’ progress. To show how assessment is carried out in our context, this research project focuses on a case study within the CAADI from FOD in the UANL.
