Osteochondrodysplasia in the Scottish Fold cats is the genetic disease, inherited according to the autosomal-dominant type; it is manifested by the deformation of bones and cartilages of the skeleton in the form of unhealthy bone growths in the region of the wrist, metacarpal, fetlock, mesopodial and phalanx joints of breast and pelvic extremities, and also tailed vertebrae. Purpose of research. To assess the effectiveness of radiation therapy in the treatment of Scottish fold cats with osteochondrodysplasia. Materials and methods. 10 Scottish Fold cats (3 males, 7 females; age ― from 5 months to 10 years) with osteochondrodysplasia were treated from 2013 to 2017. All patients had clinical signs of disease in the form of skeletal growths in the wrist, metacarpus, finger bones, lumbar, sacral or tail spine. Most of them (9 of 10) were lame. All patients were examined clinically and radiologically before the treatment. Radiation therapy was carried out on gamma therapy unit «AGAT-R» with inclusion of the affected limbs to the middle of the shoulder or thigh. Immobilization was achieved either by general anesthesia or by means of physical restraint. Fraction doses used were 1.5 Gy up to total doses of 15.0 Gy, 2 to 3 fractions per week. Results. In 9 of 10 cases (90 %) there is a subjective improvement in mobility and regression of lameness after 6 months and furthermore after treatment. Two patients in the group died within 8 and 12 months from extraneous causes, others are alive and well for the time being with no need for pain relief. In three cases a radiological control of skeletal growths was performed, with no signs of progression 6.15 and 71 months after treatment. The maximum observation period is 2196 days, the observation median is 705 days. We used a questionnaire to improve the objectiveness of cat’s mobility and pain assessment before and after treatment. Based on animal owners’ answers the score for each symptom was assigned from 0 (severe dysfunction) to 2 (function not impaired). Scores from individual cases were summed, and the averaged total results were compared. Generally, after radiation therapy, animals’ mobility improved significantly (the averaged mobility score in the group imcreased from 3.0 to 6.5). Conclusion. The radiation therapy is an effective pathogenetic and symptomatic method of treatment of Scottish fold cats with osteochondrodysplasia: in most cases it leads to pain relief and increased mobility of the animal. According to clinical and radiological (in three cases) criteria, it can also be assumed that radiation therapy leads to suppression of the skeletal growths enlargement. The effect of treatment develops within 6 months after its completion and is persistent (lasts for many months and years). The technique involves the use of small total doses, so it does not cause complications and is practically safe for the patient.

Purpose: To report the early clinical outcomes of combining intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) in comparison with IMRT alone in treating oropharynx cancer (OPC) patients. Materials and Methods: The medical records of 148 OPC patients who underwent definitive radiotherapy (RT) with concurrent systemic therapy, from January 2016 till December 2019 at Samsung Medical Center, were retrospectively reviewed. During the 5.5 weeks’ RT course, the initial 16 (or 18) fractions were delivered by IMRT in all patients, and the subsequent 12 (or 10) fractions were either by IMRT in 81 patients (IMRT only) or by IMPT in 67 (IMRT/IMPT combination), respectively, based on comparison of adaptive re-plan profiles and availability of equipment. Propensity-score matching (PSM) was done on 76 patients (38 from each group) for comparative analyses. Results: With the median follow-up of 24.7 months, there was no significant difference in overall survival and progression free survival between groups, both before and after PSM. Before PSM, the IMRT/IMPT combination group experienced grade ≥ 3 acute toxicities less frequently: mucositis in 37.0% and 13.4% (p < 0.001); and analgesic quantification algorithm (AQA) in 37.0% and 19.4% (p = 0.019), respectively. The same trends were observed after PSM: mucositis in 39.5% and 15.8% (p = 0.021); and AQA in 47.4% and 21.1% (p = 0.016), respectively. In multivariate logistic regression, grade ≥ 3 mucositis was significantly less frequent in the IMRT/IMPT combination group, both before and after PSM (p = 0.027 and 0.024, respectively). AQA score ≥ 3 was also less frequent in the IMRT/IMPT combination group, both before and after PSM (p = 0.085 and 0.018, respectively). Conclusions: In treating the OPC patients, with comparable early oncologic outcomes, more favorable acute toxicity profiles were achieved following IMRT/IMPT combination than IMRT alone.

The dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) was standardized using somatic (S) and excretory-secretory (ES) antigens of Toxocara-canis for the detection of specific antibodies in 22 serum samples from children aged 1 to 15 years, with clinical signs of toxocariasis. Fourteen serum samples from apparently normal individuals and 28 sera from patients with other pathologies were used as controls. All samples were used before and after absorption with Ascaris suum extract. When the results were evaluated in comparison with ELISA, the two tests were found to have similar sensitivity, but dot-ELISA was found to be more specific in the presence of the two antigens studied. Dot-ELISA proved to be effective for the diagnosis of human toxocariasis, presenting advantages in terms of yield, stability, time and ease of execution and low cost.

Background Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an autoimmune orbital disease characterized by edema of extraocular muscles (EOMs). Purpose To characterize the inflammation of EOMs in patients with TAO before and after radiation therapy using apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and to analyze the correlation between ADC and clinical activity of TAO. Material and Methods The ADCs of superior rectus (SR), inferior rectus (IR), medial rectus (MR), and lateral rectus (LR) muscles were measured in 52 eyes of 26 patients with TAO before and three months after orbital radiation therapy. In addition, 38 eyes of 20 healthy volunteers were included. The clinical activity score (CAS) was evaluated. The ADC maps were reconstructed and measured on the coronal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequence and calculated in mm2/s. Results The mean ADCs of EOMs before treatment were 1.42 ± 0.23 in SR, 1.37 ± 0.23 in IR, 1.41 ± 0.21 in MR, and 1.28 ± 0.25 in LR. The mean ADCs after treatment were 1.27 ± 0.18, 1.22 ± 0.26, 1.30 ± 0.22, and 1.15 ± 0.21, respectively. The ADCs were significantly decreased after treatment (all P < 0.001). The ADCs of patients with TAO were significantly higher than those of controls. There was a statistically significant correlation between the mean ADCs and the CAS in each patient with TAO both before and after treatment (before: r = 0.520; P < 0.001; after: r = 0.625; P < 0.001). Conclusion The ADC values of EOMs can be exploited as a quantitative indicator to evaluate the clinical activity and monitor the therapeutic responses of patients with TAO.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of sitagliptin on somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) and metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without clinical diabetic neuropathy. Materials and methods: Interventional, prospective, and open study. Patients with less than six months from the diagnosis were included. Examinations of SEPs and laboratory tests at fasting and after food stimulation were performed before and after three months of treatment with sitagliptin (100 mg/day). Results: There was a reduction in the mean levels of HbA1c (P < 0.0001), fasting glucose (P = 0.001), total cholesterol (P = 0.019), and ALT (P = 0.022). An increase in active GLP-1 was found at the end of the study (P = 0.0025). Several SEPs showed statistically significant differences when analyzed before and after treatment with sitagliptin. Conclusion: The results give a glimpse of the possible use of sitagliptin in the treatment of some neurodegenerative conditions of the peripheral nervous system, in addition to its already established role in glycemic control.

Currently, cervical cancer is one of the most common types of oncological pathology. Radiation therapy is the main treatment for patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. The main goal of radiation treatment for cervical cancer is to plan the amount of radiation in which the primary tumor and the areas of regional lymph outflow are subject to the maximum possible impact with minimal radiation exposure to critical organs (rectum and bladder). However, the program of combined radiation therapy according to a radical program in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer provides for irradiation of sufficiently large volumes with high therapeutic doses. Radiation therapy with radiomodifying cytostatics or with competitive polychemotherapy improves both immediate and long-term results of treatment, but increases the risk of radiation reactions. According to clinical signs, radiation toxicity is divided into general and local, which, in turn, can be early and late, depending on the time of occurrence. The risk of radiation damage naturally increases with an increase in the total absorbed dose. The presence of comorbidities also affects the likelihood of post-radiation complications. Chronic diseases of organs located in the irradiated zone significantly increase the risk of their radiation damage. Individual radiosensitivity plays a decisive role in the occurrence of radiation complications. The article describes a case of a urinary-small intestinal fistula in patient A., 80 years old. The patient has been observed in the clinic of the State Organization «Grigoriev Institute for Medical Radiology and Oncology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine» since 2016 for cervical cancer FIGO IVA stage (pathohistological conclusion was squamous cell non-keratinizing cancer), a course of combined radiation therapy with modification of 5-fluorouracil under a radical program was carried out. The relapse-free period for cervical cancer was 4 years, the patient regularly underwent control examinations at the Institute's clinic. Since March 2020 has had complaints about the presence of feces in the urine, which is why she came to the clinic. Conclusion. Treatment of this category of patients is a difficult task that requires time and great effort from both medical staff and patients

AbstractWR 2721 (ethiofos) protects against the toxic effects of the heavy metal compound cisplatin. which is used in the treatment of solid tumours. In a Phase I protocol designed to determine the maximum dose of WR 2721 which could be tolerated when administered in combination with cisplatin and radiation therapy to patients with cervical carcinoma. 11 patients were evaluated by audiologic testing before and after cisplatin WR 2721 administration in an attempt to identify the degree of ototoxicity. Forty-five per cent were noted to have significant hearing threshold changes. predominantly in the high frequencies. There were no significant changes in the speech frequencies in this series. This contrasts with the greater degrees of ototoxicity observed in controls treated in the same way who received cisplatin without WR 2721 protection.
