Recently, the demand on electrical energy is growing day by day as a result of rapid industrial development so that it is making the transmission lines more exhausted and affected especially the voltage stability. In order to overcome these problems, a FACTs device STATCOM of 12 pulse two levels is used to increase the capability of transmission lines and improving the voltage profile of the system. In this work, a new technique of fuzzy self-tuning is used in STATCOM's controller where the parameters of PI controller tuned online that is lead to improve the voltage profile when the power system exposed to the abnormal condition. The simulation results of STATCOM with tuned fuzzy-PI controller show an enhancement in voltage profile under many disturbances as compared with the system used STATCOM without this new technique. The results show a voltage profile using fuzzy-PI less over shoot and reach to steady state efficient than conventional PI. The results of total harmonic distortion (THD) show low values due to application of the Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) technique and assuming the loads are linear.

Harmonic elimination at the fundamental frequency is very much appropriate for high and medium range of power generation and applications. This paper considers a new technique for selective harmonic elimination (SHE), in which the total harmonic distortion (THD) is minimized when compared with that of the conventional one. With this technique, the harmonics at lower order are eliminated, which are more predominant than the higher ones.Cascaded H-Bridge inverter fed by a single DC is considered which is simulated with the switching angles generated by both the conventional method of SHE and the new method of SHE. The simulated results of the load voltage and the waveforms of the harmonic analysis are shown. The THD values are compared for the two techniques.  The experimental results are also shown for the new technique. The switching angles are generated with the help of field programmable gated array (FPGA) in the hardware. The value of experimental THD of voltage is compared with that of simulated THD and the comparison prove that the results are satisfactory.

Wind is a source for generating clean and economical electrical energy with a proper harnessing mechanism. For a wind energy conversion system (WECS), maximum power extraction with optimum power quality is required. In this article, the grid power quality is enhanced, using a multilevel inverter which provides smoother and pure sinusoidal waves as compared to two-level inverter by decreasing total harmonic distortion (THD) in WECS with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Also, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is based on an optimal torque controller, employed to extract more power. In this study, a WECS with a PMSG connected to the local linear resistive load and grid is considered for simulation. A multilevel inverter grid interface is controlled by in phase disposition pulse width modulation (IPD – PWM). The multilevel inverter with MPPT has been acknowledged as superior to a normal two-level inverter without MPPT Controller. Simulation results as observed for fixed and variable wind speed including MPPT demonstrate benefits of the proposed method.

Abstract The work proposed in this paper focuses on providing an effective solution to shortage of power in rural areas with an effective technique implemented in an economically feasible way. The traditional Inverters used for either residential or commercial purposes consume electrical energy from the grid to fulfill the charging and discharging of the battery, which may lead to overloading. The shortcomings of the traditional inverters such as Non-Renewable nature of power sources, increased cost of manufacturing, and multi-stage conversion complexity, are considered by the researchers for improvement. As a result, an attempt has been made to provide a cost effective renewable energy system with single stage topology for AC power applications. Single stage power conversion with allowed shoot through state is used here to avoid additional components and reduce the switching losses. Unlike the traditional inverters, the Quasi Impedance Source Inverter that is brought forward can be utilized as a Standalone system or a capable backup at the time of power outages. Sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) is applied to attain reduced harmonics which are measured by observing the harmonic pattern in Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) curve. The lab results obtained through MATLAB simulation confirm the noteworthy diminution of THD level in the proposed system compared to the reported one. Usage of Photovoltaic (PV) Panel to tap energy with reduced stochastic fluctuations due to high filtering capacity of the proposed circuit, eliminating the need of additional filters, is the uniqueness of this technique.

This paper presents the design and closed-loop current control of a grid connected seven-level, 3-phase diode-clamped multilevel inverter for Photovoltaic (PV) applications. The proposed closed loop current control technique is based on the voltage-oriented proportional integral (PI) controller theory. The modulation technique used is level-shifted-carrier sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). The gain values of PI controller were selected to achieve good current quality and dynamic response. Grid synchronization was achieved by using a synchronous-reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL). Matlab/Simulink was used for the control system design and simulation. The simulation results show that a 1.34% total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current was achieved which is within the allowable current distortion limits by international standards. The stability of the system was analyzed using pole-zero mapping and root locus.

This research deals with the design and simulation of a solar power system consisting of a KC200GT solar panel, a closed loop boost converter and a three phase inverter by using Matlab / Simulink. The mathematical equations of the solar panel design are presented. The electrical characteristics of the panel are tested at the values of 1000  for light radiation and 25 °C for temperature environment. The Proportional Integral (PI) controller is connected   as feedback with the Boost converter to obtain a stable output voltage by reducing the oscillations in the voltage to charge a battery connected to the output of the converter. Two methods (Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Zeigler- Nichols) are used for tuning PI controller to enhance the overall performance of the system. The Sine Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) technique was used to obtain a pure 3-phase in low distortion.  The voltage and current output values of ± 14V and ± 2.8A are obtained, and the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) value is 4.20%.

This article presents a cascaded three-level voltage source converter (VSC) based STATCOM employing an artificial neuron network (ANN) controller with a new simple circuit of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique. The main aim of utilizing ANN controller and SVPWM technique is to minimize response time (RT) of STATCOM and improve its performance regard to PF amplitude, and total harmonic distortion (THD) of VSC output current during the period of lagging/leading PF loads (inductive/capacitive loads). The performance of STATCOM is tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK in IEEE 3-bus system. The simulation results clearly proved that the STATCOM with intelligent controller is more efficient compared to a conventional controller (PI controller), where ANN enables the voltage and current to be in the same phase rapidly (during 1.5 cycles) with THD less than 5%.
