Euphorbia tirucalli has not been chemically studied much in Vietnam. This research described the isolation and elucidation of compounds isolated from the plant collected in Binh Thuan. Multiple chromatographic methods were applied, including normal phase silica gel column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Seven compounds were isolated and their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis as well as comparing their data with the ones in the literature. They are arjunolic acid (1), eriodictyol (2), quercitrin (3), afzelin (4), scopoletin (5), 3,3′,4- trimethylellagic acid (6), and gallic acid (7). Among them, compound 1 a major component was isolated for the first time in Euphorbia genus, while three compounds 2, 4, and 5 were isolated from this species for the first time.

From the wood of n-hexane extract of Willughbeia cochinchinensis, perform column chromatography on a normal phase silica gel with n-hexane: ethyl acetate obtained in 8 fractions. From GD-D and GD-F fractions, multiple column chromatography on silica gel was performed in combination with normal and reverse phase thin-layer chromatography, four triterpene compounds as epifriedelanol (1), taraxeryl acetate (2), ambolic acid (3) and α- amyrin (4) were isolated. Their chemical structures were determined by spectrocopic methods as well as comparing with data in the literature. These compounds were isolated for the first time from Willughbeia cochinchinensis.

Introduction: Euphorbia tirucalli L. is a medicinal plant popularly distributed in Asian countries. In Vietnam, only one study on the polar extract the plant Euphorbia tirucalli growing in Binh Thuan province, Vietnam was reported, revealing several phenolic components. As of 2019, no chemical reports on the non-polar extract from the Vietnamese plant were found. This research described the isolation and elucidation of compounds isolated from the non-polar extract of E. tirucalli growing in Binh Thuan province. Method: The n-hexane extract of this plant was carried out by using normal phase silica gel column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and gel chromatography (Sephadex LH-20). Analysis of spectroscopic data and a comparison of the NMR data with that in the literature led to the structural elucidation of isolated compounds. Results: Three terpenoid compounds, euphol (1), lupenone (2), and vomifoliol (3), along with ergosterol peroxide (4), ferulic acid (5), and vanillic acid (6) were isolated and elucidated. Conclusions: Among them, compound 3 and 4 were reported in the first time from E. tirucalli.

The lichen Roccella sinensis has not been studied chemically. This research described the isolation and elucidation of compounds isolated from the lichen Roccella sinensis collected in Binh Thuan. Phytochemistry investigation of this lichen was carried out by using normal phase silica gel column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Six compounds was isolated. Their structures were established by extensively spectroscopic analysis as well as comparison with NMR data in the literatures. They are (+)-D-montagnetol (1), (+)-D-erythrin (2), lecanorin (3), 1-acetylerythritol (4), (E)-nostodione A (5), and 2,4-dihydroxyphthalide (6). This is the first time compounds 3 6 were found in the Roccella genus. Compounds 1, 2, and 6 were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against HepG2 (liver hepatocellular carcinoma), NCI-H460 (human lung cancer), MCF-7 (human breast cancer), and HeLa (human epithelial cancer) and all of them showed no activity.

Chemical data on the lichen Usnea baileyi are scarce. The current investigation reports the extraction, isolation and characterization of depsidones from this lichen collected in Lam Dong Province. Eight depsidones were isolated and elucidated, including methylstictic acid (1), stictic acid (2), cryptostictic acid (3), 8’-O-methylmenegazziaic acid (4), menegazziaic acid (5), 8’- O-methylconstictic acid (6), constictic acid (7), and hypoconstictic acid (8). Multi chromatographic methods comprising normal phase silica gel column chromatography and thin layer chromatography were applied to the crude acetone extract to isolate and purify compounds 1-8. Their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis as well as comparing their data with ones in the literature.

The separation and chromatographic behaviour of five ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors and their four active metabolites were investigated by normal-phase thin-layer chromatography on silica using several mono- and binary non-aqueous solvent systems. The linear relationship between the RM values and the composition of employed mobile phase was obtained. The hydrophobicity parameters 0M R and C0 were determined from the regression data of the plots, analogous to reversed-phase chromatography. The chromatographically obtained hydrophobicity parameters were correlated with the calculated log P values. The current results were correlated with the lipophilicity of the studied ACE inhibitors and their metabolites, previously estimated by reversed-phase chromatography.

Introduction: Many modern medicines used today based on plants and plant products. Piper betle is generally known as the betle vine, it is an important medicinal and recreational plant. High performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) is an advanced powerful analytical method with more separation power, high performance and superior reproducibility than classic thin layer chromatography (TLC). A chromatographic fingerprint of a plant extract is a chromatographic pattern of some common chemical constituents of pharmacologically active and/or chemical characteristics. Chromatographic fingerprints are useful in authentication and identification of plant. Objectives:  Objectives of present research was to establish HPTLC fingerprinting of methanolic extract of Piper betle L. leaves. Materials and Methods: Methanolic extract of Piper betle leaves was prepared using soxhlet apparatus. HPTLC studies were performed using a CAMAG HPTLC system equipped with automatic TLC sampler-4 (ATS 4), TLC scanner 4, and vision CATS 3.0 software. Results: The study revealed the presence of alkaloids with Rf value 0.65, flavonoids with Rf values 0.19, 0.29, 0.72, 0.95., and phenolic compound with Rf value 0.7. Conclusion: The HPTLC fingerprinting profile developed for the methanolic extract of Piper betle L. leaves will help in proper identification of the plant.Piper betle

Urena lobata L. is used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. Tree roots are used to treat rheumatism, dysentery, poor digestion, flu, tonsils, malaria, asthma, goiter. Flowers are used to treat chickenpox, fever, and mental disorders. Branches, leaves or whole trees used to treat injuries bruises, rheumatism, mastitis, bites. Phytochemical investigation of the n-hexan and ethyl acetate extract of Urena lobata L. led to the isolation of β-sitosterol (1), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), a-acetylamino-phenylpropyl a-benzoylamino-phenylpropanoate (3), quercetin (4), and trans-tiliroside (5). Their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including MS, 1D, 2D NMR and comparing with those reported in previous papers. Two compounds 3, 5 were isolated for the first time from Urena lobata plant.
