AIM: To determine the effect of various types of mouthrinse on the color stability of the composite resin materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  4 types of resin material were chosen and immersed in 4 different types of mouthrinses for 2 mins daily and then restored in artificial saliva for rest of the time for 3 months. The baseline color values and post immersion color values were evaluated using colorimetrics. RESULTS:   All the resin material underwent discoloration. The lowest discoloration was seen during the usage of amflor mouthrinse. The lowest discoloration among the resin material was seen there in nanofill resin material. CONCLUSIONS: From this study we can conclude that mouth rinses with low pH are more detrimental. It’s the filler material matrix that plays a key role on the color stability of the material. AbstractThis study evaluated the influence of fluoride mouth rinses and repolishing on the superficial morphology and color stability of nanofilled resin. About 150 specimens were prepared and polished using aluminum oxide discs for 15 s with a pressure of 2 kg. The experimental groups were divided according to the immersion medium (artificial saliva, 0.5% sodium fluoride, Fluordent Reach, Oral B, Fluorgard) and repolishing procedure (without and with). The specimens were continuously immersed for 1 week. Thereafter, half of each sample was repolished. A color reading was performed after 24 h of immersion in the artificial saliva baseline, after continuous immersion, and after repolishing. The superficial morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in a qualitative way. Color change (∆E) data were submitted to a mixed analysis of variance using a Shapiro–Wilk test (p>0.05 for the different immersion media) and Sidak’s test (p<0.05 for the differences between groups). In the interaction between the repolishing and the immersion media, Fluorgard showed a statistical difference between the ∆E values with and without repolishing (p<0.0001). On the SEM observations, both Fluordent Reach and Fluorgard caused degradation of the superficial resinous matrix of the composite after continuous immersion. This matrix was removed after repolishing.

ABSTRACT:Composite resins are currently the most popular restorative material in dentistry. This is due to good aesthetics and maximum conservation ability. Behind these advantages, there are disbenefits of composite resin materials, such as polymerization shrinkage, which can lead to restoration failure. Various attempts have been investigated to reduce the shrinkage incidence of composite resins, one of which is the technique of placing the restorative material into the cavity. The restoration filling technique is recognized as a significant factor in shrinkage stress. By using a special filling technique, the polymerization shrinkage damage stress can be reduced. There are several techniques in performing composite resin fillings, including bulk and incremental techniques. These techniques have their respective advantages and disadvantages. The aim of this literature review was to compare the physical properties of composite resin restorations with bulk filling and incremental techniques. Physical properties that being studied include polymerization shrinkage, stress shrinkage, degree of conversion, bonding strength, water resorption, color stability, and temperature increase. Comparing the two techniques, composite resin with incremental filling technique has superior physical properties compared to bulk technique. From the comparison of the two techniques, the composite resin with incremental filling technique has superior physical properties compared to the bulk technique, especially in higher conversion which causes lower shrinkage stress. This situation makes the incremental technique provide better bond strength, water resorption, color stability, and lower temperature rise.Keywords: Bulk, Composite Resin, Incremental,  Physical Properties, Restoration, Restoration Technique

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the effect of beverages′ temperature on the surface roughness, hardness, and color stability of a composite resin. Materials and Methods: Fifty specimens of the Filtek Z250 composite (3M ESPE, Dental Products, St.Paul, MN, USA) were prepared and initial roughness, microhardness, and color were measured. Then the specimens were randomly divided into five groups of 10 specimens each: Coffee at 70°C, coffee at 37°C, cola at 10°C, cola at 37°C, and artificial saliva (control). After the samples were subjected to 15 min × 3 cycles per day of exposure to the solutions for 30 days, the final measurements were recorded. Results: After immersion in beverages, the artificial saliva group showed hardness values higher than those of the other groups (P < 0.001) and the microhardness values were significantly different from the initial values in all groups except for the control group. Both cola groups showed roughness values higher than the baseline values (P < 0.05), while the other groups showed values similar to the baseline measurements. When ΔE measurements were examined, the 70°C coffee group showed the highest color change among all the groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: High-temperature solutions caused alterations in certain properties of composites, such as increased color change, although they did not affect the hardness or roughness of the composite resin material tested.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a bleaching agent on the color of extrinsically pigmented indirect composite resins. Samples of five resins (Adoro, Resilab, Cristobal, Sinfony, Epricord) were manufactured and divided into five groups: red wine, coffee, orange juice, Coca-Cola, and artificial saliva (control). The stained samples were immersed in a 38% hydrogen peroxide solution for 30 min per week, over three weeks. Color readings were performed at the initial state (L0), after 21 days of dye immersion (ΔE1, L1), and after 7 (ΔE2, L2), 14 (ΔE3, L3), and 21 days (ΔE4, L4) of bleach immersion. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) test (α = 0.05). The color alteration was greater in ΔE1, regardless of color solution, indicating extrinsic pigmentation. The Resilab group exhibited greater ΔE1 values than the other resins. The bleaching agent promoted bleaching action on the surfaces of the materials studied, removing the previously impregnated pigments.

SUMMARY Aim To determine the volumetric polymerization shrinkage of four different types of composite resin and to evaluate microleakage of these materials in class II (MOD) cavities with and without a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) liner, in vitro. Materials and Methods One hundred twenty-eight extracted human upper premolar teeth were used. After the teeth were divided into eight groups (n=16), standardized MOD cavities were prepared. Then the teeth were restored with different resin composites (Filtek Supreme XT, Filtek P 60, Filtek Silorane, Filtek Z 250) with and without a RMGIC liner (Vitrebond). The restorations were finished and polished after 24 hours. Following thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin for 24 hours, then midsagitally sectioned in a mesiodistal plane and examined for microleakage using a stereomicroscope. The volumetric polymerization shrinkage of materials was measured using a video imaging device (Acuvol, Bisco, Inc). Data were statistically analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests. Results All teeth showed microleakage, but placement of RMGIC liner reduced microleakage. No statistically significant differences were found in microleakage between the teeth restored without RMGIC liner (p&gt;0.05). Filtek Silorane showed significantly less volumetric polymerization shrinkage than the methacrylate-based composite resins (p&lt;0.05). Conclusion The use of RMGIC liner with both silorane- and methacrylate-based composite resin restorations resulted in reduced microleakage. The volumetric polymerization shrinkage was least with the silorane-based composite.

Composites have been widely used for anterior as well as posterior restorations due to increased aesthetic demands. Composite restorations placed in patients oral cavity is subjected to masticatory load, pH changes and chemical effect due to mouthwashes, beverages, food etc and the detrimental effects associated with these challenges on the microhardness of composite has to be determined. The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of two commercially available non-alcoholic mouth rinses on the microhardness of micro-hybrid and nanohybrid composite resins. Forty disc-shaped composite specimens were made from each type of composite materials and were divided into 5 groups with 8 samples each, Group 1= Microhybrid+Chlorhex, Group2=Microhybrid + Hexidine, Group3= Nanohybrid + Chlorhex, Group4= Nanohybrid+ Hexidine, Group 5= Nanohybrid and Micro hybrid + artificial saliva(Control).The samples were immersed in mouthrinses for 24 hrs and microhardness was subsequently measured using a Vicker’s microhardness tester. There was no significant difference in microhardness values of tested composite resins in either mouth rinses when compared to composites immersed in artificial saliva. Non-alcoholic mouth rinses do not affect the microhardness of micro-hybrid and nanohybrid composites.

ResumoA resina composta é o material restaurador mais utilizado atualmente. Apesar de seu sucesso clínico, o material está sujeito a alterações em suas propriedades físicas, quando exposto ao meio bucal. O objetivo foi avaliar a influência da degradação química na estabilidade de cor e na rugosidade superficial de resinas micro-híbrida e nanoparticulada. Foram confeccionados 40 discos (6,0mm x 2,0mm) da resina composta micro-híbrida (Z250XT) e 40 da resina nanoparticulada (Z350XT). Após a análise da cor inicial e da rugosidade inicial, 10 discos de cada resina foram imersos em saliva artificial (Controle, pH=6,4), suco de laranja (pH= 3,4), refrigerante de limão (pH=2,9) e vinho tinto (pH=3,1), por 4 horas por dia (37ºC) durante 30 dias. Após, foram realizadas as leituras finais de cor e rugosidade. Os dados obtidos para a estabilidade de cor foram analisados pelo Teste de Kruskal-Wallis, seguido pelo Teste de Dunn (α=5%). Para a análise da rugosidade foi utilizado o Teste t para amostras pareadas (α=5%). O manchamento provocado pela saliva artificial, suco de laranja e refrigerante foi similar, mas foi estatisticamente diferente do manchamento produzido pelo vinho, em ambas as resinas testadas. O vinho produziu o mesmo grau de manchamento nas resinas micro-híbrida e nanoparticulada. Foi observado que o suco de laranja, o refrigerante e o vinho promoveram aumento da rugosidade superficial dos discos de resina. Diante disso, concluiu-se que o vinho alterou a cor de resinas compostas micro-híbrida e nanoparticulada, e que a rugosidade superficial dos discos de resina foi alterada por todas as bebidas utilizadas.Palavras chave: Resinas Compostas. Despite its clinical success, it is susceptible to changes in its physical properties when exposed to the oral environment. The aim was to evaluate the influence of acidic beverages on the color stability and on the surface roughness of the nanofilled and micro hybrid composite. Forty discs (6.0mm x 2.0mm) of the micro hybrid composite (Z250XT) and 40 of the nanofilled composite (Z350XT) were manufactured. After the measurement of the initial color and the initial roughness, 10 discs of each composite were individually immersed in artificial saliva (control, pH = 6.4), orange juice (pH=3.4), lime soda (pH = 2.9) and red wine (pH = 3.1) during 4 hours per day at 37°C for 30 days. At the end of the experiment, the final analysis of color and surface roughness were performed. The data obtained for the color stability were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s test (α= 5%). For the analysis of the surface roughness, the t test for related samples was used (α= 5%). The color changes promoted by artificial saliva, orange juice and soda were similar, but they were statistically different from staining produced by wine, in both tested composites. Wine produced the same degree of staining in both composites. Orange juice, soda and red wine increased the surface roughness of the composite discs. It was concluded that red wine significantly changes the color of micro hybrid and nanofilled composites. Furthermore, all beverages increased the surface roughness of the composites tested in the study herein.Keywords: Composite Resins. Coloring Agents. Color.

We aimed to evaluate the color stability of bulk-fill and conventional composite resin with respect to thickness and storage media. Twenty specimens of a conventional composite resin (6 mm diameter and 2 mm thick) and 40 specimens of the bulk-fill Tetric EvoCeram composite resin at two different thicknesses (6 mm diameter and 2 mm thick or 4 mm thick,n=20) were prepared. The specimens were stored in distilled water during the study period (28 d). Half of the specimens were remained in distilled water and the other half were immersed in coffee solution 20 min/d and kept in distilled water between the cycles. Color changes (ΔE) were measured using the CIEL⁎a⁎b⁎color space and a digital imaging system at 1, 7, 14, and 28 days of storage. Data were analyzed using Two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD post hoc test (P<0.05). Composite resins showed significant increase in color changes by time (bulk-fill > conventional;P<0.001). Coffee exhibited significantly more staining susceptibility than that of distilled water (P<0.001). There was greater color changes with increasing the increment thickness, which was significant at 14 (P<0.001) and 28 d (P<0.01). Color change of bulk-fill composite resin was greater than that of the conventional one after coffee staining and is also a function of increment thicknesses.

Regardless of the extensive availability of mouth rinses that claim to whiten teeth, evidence of achievement of such effect is still missing. Aim: Therefore, this study assessed in vitro the whitening effectiveness of whitening mouth rinses. Methods: Sixty intact bovine incisors were embedded in acrylic resin and had their buccal surface flattened and polished. Then, the specimens were randomly allocated to three conventional (Colgate Plax, Cepacol and Listerine Cool Mint) and three whitening mouth rinse groups (Colgate Luminous White, Cepacol Whitening and Listerine Whitening Extreme) (n=10). Following, the specimens were immersed twice a day in the mouth rinses for one minute for 28 days. In between each immersion period, the specimens remained in artificial saliva at 37oC. Color was measured at baseline, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days using a portable spectrophotometer (Easyshade, Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany) with a 6 mm of diameter probe. Color change was analyzed considering the parameters of ∆L*, ∆a*, ∆b* and, ultimately, ∆E*. The whitening efficacy of the mouth rinses was analyzed using the Whiteness Index for Dentistry (WID). Data of ∆s was analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α=0.05). Results: The type of mouth rinse affected significantly all the ∆ parameters (p<0.05). A non-whitening (conventional) mouth rinse produced the highest ΔE*, followed by the three whitening mouth rinses. The application time also affected ΔE* (p<0.05), with emphasis on the third week of treatment. Only the hydrogen peroxide-containing mouth rinse (Listerine Whitening Extreme) presented a whitening effect, with an increasing trend over time. Conclusion: Although the overall color change was not different when comparing conventional and whitening mouth rinses, the hydrogen peroxide-containing whitening mouth rinse produces an increasing whitening trend over time. Not every mouth rinse that claims to whiten teeth produces the desired effect.
