Hasil kajian citra satelit Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) menunjukkan daerah pantai selatan Banyuwangi mempunyai empat karakteristik dinamika pantai, yaitu daerah akresi, terjadi di muara Sungai Gonggo, Sungai Baru, dan Sungai Pergaul yang terjadi karena tingginya aliran (run off) dari sungai. Daerah abrasi terjadi di Teluk Grajagan yang terjadi karena adanya arus menerus dari laut sehingga sedimen dari Segoro Anakan tidak bisa diendapkan di daerah teluk dan hanya di muka sungai. Daerah abrasi dan akresi terdapat di teluk Rajegwesi dan Pancamaya yang mempunyai daerah akresi di muara sungai dan daerah abrasi di bagian sisi teluknya. Daerah stabil, terdapat di daerah-daerah yang menjorok ke laut dan sepanjang pantai Alas Purwo. Daerah akresi maupun abrasi umumnya terjadi di daerah topografi rendah, landai dan berupa aluvium, sedangkan daerah stabil terdapat pada daerah dengan topografi bertebing dan batuan penyusun berupa batuan keras. Kata kunci : sedimen, dinamika pantai, Landsat TM, pantai selatan Banyuwangi The result of the assesment of Landsat TM imageries show that the coastal area of south Banyuwangi have four coastal dynamic characteristics those are: accretion, abrasion, accretion and abrasion, and stable areas. Accretion area, is located in the river estuary of Gonggo, Baru, and Pergaul rivers that occur by run off from river. Abrasion area, is located in Grajagan Bay caused by continuous current from the sea so that the sediment from Segoro Anakan cannot precipitate in the bay area but only in the river mouth. Abrasion and accretion areas are located in Rajegwesi and Pancamaya Bays where the accretion area is in a river estuary but the abrasion area is in the side shares of the bay. Stable area is located in the peninsula area and along the Alas Purwo coast. Generally the accretion or abrasion areas were occurred in low relief topography and occupied by alluvium, whereas the stable area is characterized by the high relief topography consisting of hard rock. In order to clarify the origin and behavior of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in a tidal river, variation of SPM in a tidal river was investigated with regard to its size and constituents. SPM was separated into three groups according to size. Change of contents of titanium and organic substances of each group of SPM was examined. SPM which was discharged by run-off was transported with decomposition and sedimentation in a tidal river. Concentration of SPM with a particle size greater than 0.45 μm increased due to resuspension in a tidal river. Origin of SPM with a size of less than 0.45 μm at upstream areas was from natural soil and most of such SPM which had been transported settled near a river mouth. It was determined from examination of the CN ratio and the ratio of the number of attached bacteria to free bacteria that SPM with a size greater than 1.0 μm at upstream areas was decomposing intensively. At the downstream areas, SPM with a size of less than 0.45 μm came from the sea. SPM with particle size greater than 1.0 μm consisted of plankton and substances which were decomposed sufficiently while flowing.

The nutrient circulation and microbial abundance of oyster-producing waters in the Malpeque Bay area, Prince Edward Island, were followed at two stations through an open season, and the efficiency of carbon assimilation and dissimilation was estimated. Part of the organic fall-out evidently entered the water again in the spring as nutrient salts, but a certain portion was not returned and this represented a net loss from the ecosystem. The nutrient circulation at a station located in a saltwater pond was more efficient than at a station located in a river estuary. In the pond, mineralization was 31% of primary production, largely by mud bacteria; in the estuary it was 17%, about equally by mud and water organisms.

Abstract Obtaining energy from tide currents in onshore locations is of great interest due to the proximity to the points of consumption. This opens the door to the feasibility of new installations based on hydrokinetic microturbines even in zones of moderate speed. In this context, the accuracy of energy predictions based on hydrodynamic models is of paramount importance. This research presents a high precision methodology based on a multidimensional hydrodynamic model that is used to study the energetic potential in estuaries. Moreover, it is able to estimate the flow variations caused by microturbine installations. The paper also shows the results obtained from the application of the methodology in a study of the Nalón river mouth (Asturias, Spain).

Major objectives of this study are to evaluation the enrichment, accumulation, and potential biological effects of copper (Cu) in the surface sediments of Jen-Gen River estuary, Taiwan. Eleven sampling locations were installed near the mouth of Jen-Gen River to collect sediment samples for analyzing Cu. Results of laboratory analyses show that concentrations of Cu in the sediments are between 67 and 278 mg/kg with an average of 181±61 mg/kg. The spatial distribution of Cu reveals that the Cu concentration is relatively high in the boundary of the river estuary. This indicates that upstream industrial and municipal wastewater discharges along the river bank are major sources of pollution. Results from the enrichment factor (EF) analysis imply that the sediments can be characterized as minor to moderately severe degree of Cu enrichment. Results of geo-accumulation index (Igeo) analysis indicate that the sediments can be characterized as none to moderate degree of Cu accumulation. Base on the comparison with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the concentrations of Cu in Jen-Gen River mouth sediments may cause acute biological damage.

<p>The transport of dissolved organic carbon from land to ocean is a large and dynamic component of the global carbon cycle. Export of dissolved organic carbon from watersheds is largely controlled by hydrology, and is exacerbated by increasing major rainfall and storm events, causing pulses of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to be shunted through rivers downstream to estuaries. Despite this increasing trend, the fate of the pulsed terrestrial DOC in estuaries remains uncertain. Here we present DOC data from 1999 to 2017 in Neuse River Estuary (NC, USA) and analyze the effect of six tropical cyclones (TC) during that period on the quantity and fate of DOC in the estuary. We find that that TCs promote a considerable increase in DOC concentration near the river mouth at the entrance to the estuary, on average an increase of 200 µmol l<sup>-1</sup> due to storms was observed. TC-induced increases in DOC are apparent throughout the estuary, and the duration of these elevated DOC concentrations ranges from one month at the river mouth to over six months in lower estuary. Our results suggest that despite the fast mineralization rates, the terrestrial DOC is processed only to a minor extent relative to the pulsed amount entering the estuary. We conclude that the vast quantity of organic carbon delivered to estuaries by TCs transform estuaries from active biogeochemical processing “reactors” of organic carbon to appear more like passive shunts due to the sheer amount of pulsed material rapidly flushed through the estuary.</p>

Movements of adult sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) entering the Skeena River were examined in 1969 and 1970 by ultrasonic tracking methods. Fifteen of 18 sockeye released in the lower river seemed to move passively in and out with flood and ebb streams. Two fish moved upstream independent of tides and one salmon swam against ebb and flood currents. Ground speeds in both years of operation were 1.6 km/h during rising and 2.1 km/h during falling tides, causing the fish to be transported downstream by about 3 km per tidal cycle. Three salmon released outside the river mouth in salt water also seemed to ride the tidal flows passively. Ground speeds during ebb (3.6 km/h) were again greater than during flood (2.0 km/h), indicating a net offshore movement. We conclude that these passive movements are not an artifact but that sockeye salmon normally slow down or pause upon reaching the "home river" and drift for a period in tidal currents in the estuary and river mouth before migrating upstream.

Semburan lumpur Sidoarjo (Lusi) di daerah Porong menambah fungsi Sungai Porong menjadi sarana untuk mengalirkan lumpur ke arah laut, karena kemampuan tanggul – tanggul penghalang di sekitar lokasi semburan sangat terbatas. Kondisi ini berdampak pula terhadap terbawanya lumpur lapindo ke perairan Porong. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mengetahui sebaran sedimen di sungai, muara dan perairan sekitar Porong terutama yang bersumber dari luapan lumpur Sidoarjo. Materi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah sebanyak 30 sampel sedimen hasil sampling yang diambil di lokasi sungai – muara sungai Porong dan 30 sampel sedimen permukaan dasar laut di perairan sekitar muara sungai Porong. Distribusi umum sebaran sedimen di perairan Porong menunjukkan sedimen lumpur ditemukan di pinggir sungai dan sedimen pasir ditemukan di bagian tengah sungai. Distribusi umum sedimen dasar perairan di sekitar muara Porong berupa pasir, lempung dan lempung lanau pasiran. Hasil analisis mikroskopik dan SEM menunjukkan bahwa sedimen yang berasal dari luapan lumpur Sidoarjo ditemukan di sepanjang aliran Sungai Porong sampai muara, namun belum ditemukan di perairan luar sekitar muara Porong. Sedimen Lusi yang sampai ke muara Porong berukuran butir sampai 2,5 mikron. Deskripsi megaskopis menunjukkan sedimen Lusi pasir - kerikil umumnya berbentuk pipih (halus– agak halus). Hasil SEM menunjukkan bahwa sedimen yang berasal dari lumpur Sidoarjo umumnya seragam dan didominasi berupa smectite. Berbeda dengan sedimen sungai, hasil SEM yang diperoleh dari sampel laut yang menunjukkan sedimennya beragam, berupa montmorilonite, kaolinite dan illite. Kata Kunci : Sedimen, Porong, lumpur Sidoarjo The Sidoarjo mudflow in the Porong area increases the functions of Porong River as media to drain the muds towards the sea, because the ability of embankments in the area as a barrier is very limited. This condition intends to determine the presence and distribution of sediment in rivers, estuaries and waters originating from the Lusi mudflow. The materials used in this study are the sediment sampling results as many as 30 samples taken from the river and off the river mouth and 30 samples of sea surface sediments in the surrounding waters. General distribution of sediments in the Porong River shows the form of mud sediments are generally found in the riverside and sandy sediment found in the middle of the river, while the distribution of sediments in waters Porong form of sand, clay and sandy silt clay. The results of microscopic and SEM analysis showed that the sediments derived from the Lusi mudflow found along Porong River till estuaries, but they have not reach surrounding water of Porong estuary. The Lusi sediment that reached the estuary Porong sized to 2.5 micron. General megascopic description show the shape of the Lusi sediment as sand-gravel is a flat-shaped (rounded - sub rounded). SEM results showed that the sediments derived from the Lusi is generally uniform and dominated by smectite. In contrast to stream sediments, the SEM results obtained from marine sediment samples show a variety of sediments, in the form of montmorillonite, caolinite and illite. The study of shoreline changes during 1990 - 2008 in the delta of the River Jeneberang, Makassar was conducted by evaluating sediment transport into and out of a cell. Longshore sediment transport was computed by considering the influence of heights and angles of the breaking waves. Results of calculation of sediment transport showed that the dominant of sediment transport was to the north during the arrival of the southwest and west waves, and to the south when the wave coming from the northwest. Comparison between shore profiles resulting from model and coastline satellite imagery showed similarity. The difference between the two tend to be occurred at the head land part of the shoreline. This was due to complexity of coastal dynamic at the area. The results of the 19 years shoreline simulation showed that there was a tendency of abrasion at the upsteam head land part as the wave energy tend to converge and accretion at the bay part as the wave energy tend to diverge. Abrasion mainly occurred at Tanjung Bunga (head land) where the coast retreat 181.1 m. Accretion occur in the bay area (Tanjung Merdeka) where the coast advance to the sea for about 59.8 m. The shoreline tend to be stable when the profile was straight such as Barombong Coast.Keywords: abrasion, accretion, sediment transport, shoreline changes.

The coasts of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) are facing threats and challenges from rising sea levels, frequent extreme events and human intervention. In this study, the Coastal Hazard Wheel (CHW) was used to classify the coasts of GBA, assess its hazard change from 2010 to 2020, identify hazards hotspots and explore available coastal management options. The results show that the coastal types of GBA in 2010 and 2020 are consistent, with delta/low estuary island and hard rock slope as the main types. GBA is vulnerable to ecosystem disruption, saltwater intrusion, gradual inundation and flooding hazards. Compared with 2010, the high risk proportion of each hazard in 2020 decreased significantly, but the high risk of flooding increased slightly. All kinds of hazards are interdependent and influenced by each other. The Pearl River Estuary, the east bank of Yamen Waterway, the west bank of Huangmao Sea and Dapeng Bay show very high hazard vulnerability, and the flooding risk is the highest. Soft measures such as coastal zoning, tsunami warning systems, wetland restoration and hazard simulation are most widely used in coastal management. CHW is applicable to GBA’s coastal hazard vulnerability assessment, which provides a case study for coastal risk assessment of GBA and has certain reference significance for hazard management and sustainable development for the Bay Area.
