Management decisions on the formation of the product portfolio are traditionally in the field of research of scientists as the relevance questions of the choice of strategic goals of the enterprise involves the justification of marketing and production decisions in optimizing the structure of the product range. The formation of the product portfolio involves certain management actions to work with a particular product (its development, withdrawal or modification) or range of products, taking into account changes in the structure of the portfolio of the enterprise. Today’s market situation creates new requirements for existing approaches to product development; at the same time such efforts must directly take into account the aggregate market and business requirements for reduced lead time, reliable product performance and cost-effective product differentiation. In general, one way to meet the increased demand for product development speed and productivity is to identify multidisciplinary synergies that can be used to increase system efficiency. The main principles that were singled out allow to develop a practical system for decision support which will allow effectively form the product portfolio of the enterprise and develop optimal characteristics of the product and its product range group. The methodology of decision support is based on interdisciplinary integration, which is formed by using the main relationships between optimization and modelling of a product or group of products as well as aspects of product portfolio management. Scientific and methodological approaches in the formation of the company's portfolio were substantiated which allows to determine the optimal ratio between the range of products and product units that are part of them. The LLC “Khodoriv Meat Packing Factory” is one of the leading producers of meat products in Ukraine. Product range was analysed and the method of quantitative evaluation of goods indicators is proposed to factory. The system approach to formation of an optimum commodity portfolio of the enterprise is considered. The analysed of the assortment group of goods and the assessment of the product portfolio of the enterprise by the method of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Positioning of strategic business units was carried out. The desired assortment group of goods was selected, which will help the company to achieve its goals. The basic marketing strategies are offered.

BACKGROUND Decisional tools have demonstrated their importance in informing manufacturing and commercial decisions in the monoclonal antibody domain. Recent approved therapies in regenerative medicine have shown great clinical benefits to patients. OBJECTIVE The objective of this review was to investigate what decisional tools are available and what issues and gaps have been raised for their use in regenerative medicine. METHODS We systematically searched MEDLINE to identify articles on decision support tools relevant to tissue engineering, and cell and gene therapy, with the aim of identifying gaps for future decisional tool development. We included published studies in English including a description of decisional tools in regenerative medicines. We extracted data using a predesigned Excel table and assessed the data both quantitatively and qualitatively. RESULTS We identified 9 articles addressing key decisions in manufacturing and product development challenges in cell therapies. The decision objectives, parameters, assumptions, and solution methods were analyzed in detail. We found that all decisional tools focused on cell therapies, and 6 of the 9 reviews focused on allogeneic cell therapy products. We identified no available tools on tissue-engineering and gene therapy products. These studies addressed key decisions in manufacturing and product development challenges in cell therapies, such as choice of technology, through modeling. CONCLUSIONS Our review identified a limited number of decisional tools. While the monoclonal antibodies and biologics decisional tool domain has been well developed and has shown great importance in driving more cost-effective manufacturing processes and better investment decisions, there is a lot to be learned in the regenerative medicine domain. There is ample space for expansion, especially with regard to autologous cell therapies, tissue engineering, and gene therapies. To consider the problem more comprehensively, the full needle-to-needle process should be modeled and evaluated.

New Product Portfolio Management is aimed at helping decision-makers better select projects for new products based on key criteria for the manufacturer. The Brazilian pharmaceutical industry has been undergoing change due to stricter sanitary requirements following the enactment of the Generic Law in 1999. This paper presents the results of a research study aimed at clarifying the rationale employed by national pharmaceutical companies in selecting and prioritizing their new product development projects. Consequently, proposals for an analytical structure that could help these companies better select their products were produced. The research was carried out using case study methodology in which four different companies were investigated. The results of the field study confirmed that these companies had a non-structured Product Development System and that the selection of new product development projects was made on a non-systematic basis. The research also identified key criteria for the selection of projects of new pharmaceutical products, which provided the basis for the preparation of a proposal for a managerial standard for application of New Product Portfolio Management.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the relationship between the adherence to critical chain project management (CCPM) practices and the new product development performance, in terms of the results of product development programs and product portfolio management (PPM). Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted with 79 innovative companies operating in Brazil. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis and non-parametric tests. Findings Significant and positive correlations were found between CCPM adoption and the performance factors proposed. The adoption of CCPM offered stronger correlation with PPM performance than with the adoption of traditional methods. The results further indicate a possible indirect contribution of CCPM practices to the product development program by means of PPM improvement. Originality/value This study deepens the knowledge of the joint study between project management and new product development, by bringing empirical evidence that the adoption of specific practices suggested by CCPM is used by organizations with superior performance. Moreover, the results broaden CCPM literature by attesting that companies do not necessarily have to apply the CCPM approach in a formal and explicit way to obtain the performance results given. The analyses still have practical value when indicating which CCPM practices should be prioritized by managers seeking high performance in PPM.

In order to develop the best possible product enterprises have to consider multiple solutions during the product engineering process. In early phases of the product development process enterprises generally reduce the number of possible solutions by focusing only on a few solutions to minimize development time and costs. However, in the early phases enterprises are not able to make an objective choice for the best possible product, because of missing information. To evaluate multiple solutions and nevertheless develop a cost effective product the enterprises have the aim to simplify and to objectify the decision process especially in the early phases of the product development process. Therefore the enterprises need a methodology to enable objective decisions.

PurposeThis study attempts to create new insights into innovation management through the integration of innovation management processes and sustainable, iterative circles. Through the exploration of the use of sustainable, iterative circles in a manufacturing environment, this paper explores their role in facilitating customer-focused innovation practices. Other supporting antecedences for innovative behavior are reviewed, and their combined effect upon delivering cost-effective product developments are assessed.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through semi-structured interviews in manufacturing organizations from the automotive industry. Interviews were conducted with senior functional managers to interpret the application of sustainable, iterative development circles. Analysis of the data was undertaken via thematic analysis based upon pertinent and emergent themes.FindingsSustainable, iterative development circles overcame the inherent path-dependency of traditional linear development approaches, whereas, traditional approaches structure the involvement of key business functions, iterative circles facilitate more flexible approaches to product development that more closely met the requirements of the customer, especially when those requirements are in a state of flux.Practical implicationsThis iterative, customer-centric approach to product development reflects the increasingly dynamic market environments in which manufacturing organizations operate. Using this approach helps to focus the organization’s attention upon customer requirements rather than the challenges of adhering to the rigid dogma of a chosen development methodology.Originality/valueThis study proposes a new approach toward the development of innovations in manufacturing organizations utilizing the sustainable, iterative circles, and therefore, contrasts with the traditional, linear development methodologies that are usually employed.
