AbstractThe steel turnout is one of the key components in the medium–low-speed maglev line system. However, the vehicle under active control is prone to vehicle–turnout coupled vibration, and thus, it is necessary to identify the vibration characteristics of this coupled system through field tests. To this end, dynamic performance tests were conducted on a vehicle–turnout coupled system in a medium–low-speed maglev test line. Firstly, the dynamic response data of the coupled system under various operating conditions were obtained. Then, the natural vibration characteristics of the turnout were analysed using the free attenuation method and the finite element method, indicating a good agreement between the simulation results and the measured results; the acceleration response characteristics of the coupled system were analysed in detail, and the ride quality of the vehicle was assessed by Sperling index. Finally, the frequency distribution characteristics of the coupled system were discussed. All these test results could provide references for model validation and optimized design of medium–low-speed maglev transport systems.

In the zebrafish lateral line system, interneuromast cells (INCs) between neuromasts are normally kept quiescent by underlying Schwann cells (SWCs). Upon severe injuries that cause the complete loss of an entire NM, INCs can occasionally differentiate into NMs but how they escape from the inhibition by SWCs is still unclear. Using a genetic/chemical method to specifically ablate a neuromast, we found a small portion of larvae can regenerate a new neuromast, but the regeneration was hindered by inhibiting macrophages. We also demonstrated that the inhibition of macrophage can reduce the percentage of tail fin-amputated larvae to regenerate a new NM. By in toto imaging, we further discovered heterogeneities in macrophage behavior and distribution along lateral line. We witnessed the crawling of macrophages in between injured lateral line and SWCs during regeneration and also in between the second primordium and the first mature lateral line during development. It implies that macrophages may physically separate and alleviate the inhibition from pLLn and SWCs to break the quiescence of INCs during regeneration and development in the zebrafish lateral line.

Aiming at improving assembly line efficiency and flexibility, a balancing method of parallel U-shaped assembly line system is proposed. Based on the improved product priority diagram, the bidirectional priority value formula is obtained. Then, assembly lines are partitioned into z-q partitions and workstations are defined. After that, the mathematical model of the parallel U-shaped assembly line balancing problem is established. A heuristic algorithm based on bidirectional priority values is used to solve explanatory examples and test examples. It can be seen from the results and the effect indicators of the assembly line balancing problem that the heuristic algorithm is suitable for large balancing problems. The proposed method has higher calculation accuracy and shorter calculation time. The balancing effect of the parallel U-shaped assembly line is better than that of single U-shaped assembly line, which verifies the superiority of the parallel U-type assembly line and effectiveness of the proposed method. It provides a theoretical and practical reference for parallel U-type assembly line balancing problem.

The accuracy of transmission tower-line system simulation is highly impacted by the transmission line model and its coupling with the tower. Owing to the high geometry nonlinearity of the transmission line and the complexity of the wind loading, such analysis is often conducted in the commercial software. In most commercial software packages, nonlinear truss element is used for cable modeling, whereas the initial strain condition of the nonlinear truss under gravity loading is not directly available. Elastic catenary element establishes an analytical formulation for cable structure under distributed loading; however, the nonlinear iteration to reach convergence can be computational expensive. To derive an optimal transmission tower-line model solution with high fidelity and computational efficiency, an open-source three-dimensional model is developed. Nonlinear truss element and elastic catenary element are considered in the model development. The results of the study imply that both elements are suitable for the transmission line model; nevertheless, the initial strain in nonlinear truss element largely impacts the model accuracy and should be calibrated from the elastic catenary model. To cross-validate the developed models on the coupled transmission tower and line, a one-span eight-line system is modeled with different elements and compared with several state-of-the-art commercial packages. The results indicate that the displacement time-history root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the open-source transmission tower-line model is less than 1 % and with a 66 % computational time reduction compared with the ANSYS model. The application of the open-source package transmission tower-line model on extreme wind speed considering the aerodynamic damping is further implemented.

ABSTRACT A remarkable diversity of lateral line patterns exists in adult teleost fishes, the basis of which is largely unknown. By analysing the lateral line patterns and organ numbers in 29 Oryzias species and strains we report a rapid diversification of the lateral line system within this genus. We show a strong dependence of lateral line elaboration (number of neuromasts per cluster, number of parallel lateral lines) on adult species body size irrespective of phylogenetic relationships. In addition, we report that the degree of elaboration of the anterior lateral line, posterior lateral line and caudal neuromast clusters is tightly linked within species, arguing for a globally coordinated mechanism controlling lateral line organ numbers and patterns. We provide evidence for a polygenic control over neuromast numbers and positioning in the genus Oryzias. Our data also indicate that the diversity in lateral lines can arise as a result of differences in patterning both during embryonic development and post-embryonically, where simpler embryonic patterns generate less complex adult patterns and organ numbers, arguing for a linkage between the two processes.

Sinocyclocheilus represents the largest freshwater cavefish genus in the world. This emerging model system is endemic to the southern Chinese karstic landscape, and demonstrates multiple adaptations for life in caves (troglomorphism), with eye-degeneration being the most pronounced. The less-apparent lateral line system, which is often expanded in cave-dwellers, has been studied in other cavefish systems, but never in the context of this diversification. Here we investigated the distribution and evolution of cephalic neuromasts in 26 Sinocyclocheilus species. We used live-staining and behavioural assays, and interpreted results in a phylogenetic context. We show that asymmetry in neuromast features and the rate of evolution is greater in cave-adapted species. Ancestral state reconstructions show that most Sinocyclocheilus are right-biased with some scatter, and show convergence of neuromast phenotypes. There is substantial variation in cephalic neuromast distribution patterns between and (to a lesser extent) within species. Behavioural assays show blind species have a distinctive wall-following behaviour. We explain these patterns in the context of the deep evolutionary history associated with this karstic region, other traits, and habitat occupation of these remarkable diversifications of fishes. Interestingly, some of these neuromast patterns and behaviour show convergence with other phylogenetically distant cavefish systems.

An experimental investigation was performed in predicting the consequences of the exposure to seawater and moisture absorption on the mechanical properties of two different GFRE pipe rings made of E-glass and S-glass fiber and utilized in aircraft fuel pipe line system. Filament winded tubular composite pipe rings were immersed in seawater for two, four and six months, respectively and their moisture absorption was noted. The outcomes exhibit a remarkable decrease in fatigue life for saturated GFRE sample rings. In contrast, a water absorption up to 40% of the maximum content exhibited no impact. The tests revealed debonding and cracks in the fiber and matrix interphase in the case of samples immersed in seawater on a long-term basis, although the applied mechanical load was zero.
