Central Tapanuli is known for many stunning tourist locations, mainly its stretch of beach so that it becomes a great potential as an area of tourism with adequate accommodation as well as resorts. Some problems in the design resort that attract the attention and interest of tourist to come, how to design space programs according to human needs in it, and how to design buildings that are responsive to local climate, cultural and social conditions. From these problems, it is intended to create resorts with a variety of recreational facilities, design inner spaces and outdoor spaces according to resorts needs and local wisdom, and can introduce local culture to foreign tourists through resort design. Therefore, the research conducted by collecting existing location information, literature studies, comparative studies, and field surveys. After doing each step above, the result obtained, namely the design of the Beachside Resort using vernacular architecture, which is applied to each form of resort building, ranging from hotel, restaurant, cottages, spa and sauna, and other supporting facilities, using the types of the Central Tapanuli household, combined with the application of “Dalihan Natolu”. By obtaining these result, it is expected to become tourism locations and become a positive response in bringing back the traditional architecture of Central Tapanuli.

The aesthetic of architecture changes with the history, and its evolution is a dynamic, humane and regional process. The contemporary China is in the double transition periods of traditional and modern, modern and postmodern, therefore the value of architecture lost its order caused by the overlapping and conflicting of different values in different periods, either external “image” or intrinsic “meaning”, are in a state of disorder. With the advent of modernization, traditional architecture seems to be gradually forgotten and abandoned. However, many traditional villages still circulate the environmental wisdom that contemporary architects still use in their designs. Most of the traditional houses all over the world use local building material, make full use of renewable energy, using the natural energy of natural climate actively such as light, heat, wind to adapt to the climate environment, with good adaptability to the local climate, topography and, is a model of passive building technology. This article attempts from Three angles to explore, which are the diagram and theory, simulation software, and environment measurement of Chinese traditional village. Through the above research, we try to find the coupling between traditional local-style dwelling houses and modern residence in the design.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between vernacular architecture and Frei Otto's work, searching for shared principles and specific singularities, and testing whether lightness and sustainability can be identified as a common goal.Design/methodology/approachThe study is focused on tents and yurts, as archetypal examples of traditional architecture, and membrane structures and gridshells, as two types of light structures developed by Frei Otto. A comparative analysis of their behavior, form, elements, types, materials and strength has been carried out.FindingsThe survey carried out shows that Frei Otto's innovative tents and gridshells were not based on form imitation of vernacular architecture, but rather on a thorough understanding of physical form-generating processes, driving specific materials to optimal form, like his experiments with soap film models to generate tensioned minimal surfaces or his experiments with hanging chain net models to generate compressive antifunicular lattice shells.Originality/valueThis paper highlights how Frei Otto's endeavor to get the maximum with the minimum, to achieve a lot from a little, is also a key target of lightness and sustainability, and an essential feature of vernacular architecture.

Water scarcity is already causing serious challenges nowadays and devastating water-related processes will certainly continue for decades to come. The emerging water crisis requires new political arrangements, new technological solutions and the development of new water supply chains. Among the possible political-diplomatic answers, water trade may be a viable option, as water abundant countries could distribute resources by commercializing their water surplus. Water trade, however, faces serious obstacles. Dependence of different countries on states that have water surplus, political leverage and the possible opportunity when external powers could control the essentially important human needs are all examples of potential risks. These threats hinder the development of interstate water trade cooperation and orient countries struggling with water shortages towards domestic solutions. This study attempts to examine the practice of water scarcity and water diplomacy, while also applies the Turkish experience as a case study for demonstrating constraints of water trade. The paper will hopefully shed light on the threats posed by global and regional water scarcity and draw attention to the opportunities and limitations of water commercialization. The aim of our study is to outline the issues related to the distribution and trade of water, furthermore to present the problems of water as a product. Our research focuses primarily on Turkey, which has also become involved in water trade, but the story still ended in failure.

Abstract Using a focus group approach, Midwest homeowners in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, with recent experience and exposure to landscape design services were interviewed to assess their perceptions of the quality of available design services. In general, participants were pleased with their design experience and the quality of service provided to them. Poor communication between participants and landscape designers or landscape architects was commonly voiced as a key service limitation. Lack of homeowner knowledge of the design process was also identified as a limitation to good design, but to a lesser extent. Additionally, participants identified a variety of correlations between their landscapes and the potential for enhanced quality-of-life (QOL). Although not typically perceived as a critical singular QOL enhancement factor such as availability of food or medical care, quality landscape design appears to cumulatively enhance QOL in a significant way due to the wide variety of human needs that well-designed outdoor spaces can address.

The development of Islam in Indonesia is very rapidly growing, as the largest religion in Indonesia, the need for spiritual good in terms of worship and social is needed in variousregions in Indonesia. Semarang as the capital of Central Java Province became the city which must be the center of development of all aspects of human needs, including religious facilities for the city of Semarang and surrounding areas. One of the areas that became religious facilities, especially Islam in Semarang is the Great Mosque of Central Java. In addition to being the biggest iconic mosque in Semarang and used as a tourist spot, the area provides various facilities to create a circulation to connect these facilities. Circulation becomes an important part of an area because the circulation is always in the access by the perpetrators of the area, the perpetrators in question one of them is the visitor. Ease and comfort of the circulation become things to note so that visitors will feel at home to come to the area.  Circulation in the Great Mosque of Central Java is a concern to be discussed in this paper, because in addition to the needs of the surrounding community will be provided facilities that are always in access by the community, the Great Mosque of Central Java is also used as one of the tourist attractions in Central Java by tourists both local and local outdoors. Signage is also discussed because ease and comfort in the circulation is also determined by good signage.

In the twenty-first century, with the development of technology, architecture is not just a shelter or even “a frozen music” (by Johann Wolfgang van Goethe). Instead, architecture becomes a huge communication channel between people and space. Thus with the integration of computational technology into architecture design, the new term—“smart space” has emerged. Some researchers have applied technology into intelligent space design, such as intelligent kitchen, smart collaboration design studio and smart health care environment. Sometimes creating a fancy or an alternative smart space is not enough, the essential factor of smart space is to satisfy human needs and keep good relationship between human and space. Therefore, this research will find out what the role of human-computer interaction in smart space design is. And the purpose of this research is to present two different cases of smart space: “Time home pub” and “BCI studio” and make the analysis of the transition from traditional architecture to smart space design. Also this research further discusses how HCI redefines the functions and lifestyle of traditional architecture.

Abstract Traditional architecture is one of the most important segments in the preservation and development of cultural identity. The Lake Skadar region abounds in examples of vernacular building activity that provide the clearest evidence of the creation of settlements and houses as a result of adaptation to natural environment. The study of vernacular architecture on the shores of Lake Skadar is related to the identification and potential evaluation of its local traditional features, as ecological building forms which express the principle of sustainability. Within the framework of research on vernacular architecture of this area, analysis is undertaken with the aim of defining guidelines for revitalizing traditional settlements in this region. In this respect the emphasis of this work is on recognizing the potential and possible directions in revitalization of cultural heritage of traditional settlements in keeping with the principles of sustainable development.

The natural disaster in Nabire in February 2004 and November 2004 has left a noumerous effects on buildings. Many buildings have destroyed because of the terrifying effect of natural disaster which caused a big loss both for material and for the human safety. However, the misapplication of construction and inappropriate choice of material almost cause the terrible damage. After the natural disaster passed, the only left is mostly on the long time needed to build the buildings for people who suffer from the disaster. Because of this problem above, many people usually stay in uncomfortable places such a tend, and this condition creates social and health problems. Concerning the problem above, it is needed to create the "quick built house" which is hopefully can be accepted by the community to cope with the terrifying effect of the natural disaster. In the first year of this research, the data concerning traditional architecture and vernacular architecture in Nabire will be collected. This step will be done in order to understand more detail about all the problem faced and identified all the potential aspects which can be developed to build house for people. The deepest study of vernacular architecture is expected not only to make the house close to the uniqueness of the local activities and culture, but also to make it understandable and built easily by the people/community, because its construction and architecture have become part of their life.

Traditional architecture is integrated into the landscape, is adapted to the environment, and uses local natural materials. These are the general features. In fact, in each area there are their own and recognizable elements that ensure the local specificity. In this context, the present study aims to emphasize the beauty of traditional Romanian architecture in terms of philately. It is desired to expose the architectural specifics from the other five areas. This time it is the turn of illustrated postcards and other philatelic effects from Nereju (Vrancea), Ostrov (Constanța), Sălciua de Jos (Alba), Șanț (Bistrița-Năsăud) and Sârbova (Timiș) to come to the fore. What do these households have in common? Each of them suggests the idea that the new architecture should not imitate the old one. But it must respect the local specificity, assuming at the same time the moment when it was created. There is no need for constructions that imitate the architecture of 100-150 years ago (shown in the philatelic effects exposed), but for constructions that respect the spirit of the place.
