Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in old people. We used the Smart Skirting Board® (SSB®) that integrates, among other things, a Snoezelen system, a laser system, music, video and aromas for multisensory and cognitive stimulation. The SSB® allows a non-pharmacological intervention, and the brain stimulation is achieved, improving the elderly person’s attention span, memory, mood, verbal skills and concentration and helping them to relax and offering an atmosphere of security and mental and physical relaxation. Based on a study that was conducted, the smart skirting board as a therapeutic tool, contributed significantly to the improvement of the quality of life of the elderly with psychomotor deficits and particularly those showing signs of Alzheimer's.

The retina is a part of the central nervous system, a thin multilayer with neuronal lamination, responsible for detecting, preprocessing, and sending visual information to the brain. Many retinal diseases are characterized by hemodynamic perturbations and neurodegeneration leading to vision loss and reduced quality of life. Since catecholamines and respective bindings sites have been characterized in the retina, we systematically reviewed the literature with regard to retinal expression, distribution and function of alpha1 (α1)-, alpha2 (α2)-, and beta (β)-adrenoceptors (ARs). Moreover, we discuss the role of the individual adrenoceptors as targets for the treatment of retinal diseases.

The Malaysian government estimated that in 2013, 5.5% of the Malaysian population comprises of senior citizens aged 60 years old and above. Recent research had revealed that 14.3% of the older Malaysians are at risk of Major Neurocognitive Disorder (MND; also known as dementia). As the elderly population increases gradually in the country, the chances of them suffering from MND are also expected to increase. MND is often associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills which are severe enough to affect the ability to perform everyday activities among those who are diagnosed with these symptoms. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is a brief treatment for those suffering from mild to moderate MND. However, the efficacy of this treatment has not been evident in Malaysia. The aim of the present study is to identify the effectiveness of CST in stabilizing the declination of cognitive functions, as well as improving the quality of life among elderly suffering from mild to moderate MND. Thirty elderly diagnosed with mild and moderate MND will be invited to participate in a single group pre-post trial, involving a 45 minute CST treatment to be administered for 14 weeks on a regular weekly basis. The participants will be selected from residents of care centers elderly at Klang Valley area. The outcomes and effectiveness of the CST will be determined by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s Disease (QOL-AD). The former instrument will be used to examine the cognitive abilities of the elderly, while the latter will be used to determine issues related to the quality of life based on the participant and caregivers rating report. As the CST efficacies has been proven in several countries such as the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Japan, the present study anticipates that it will also be effective in the Malaysia context and helps in treating MND.

INTRODUCTION: Physical exercise has been associated with improvement of quality of live (QoL), but its effect among the elderly with depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is still unclear. This systematic review evaluated randomized and controlled studies about the effect of physical exercise on QoL of older individuals with a clinical diagnosis of depression and AD.METHODS:We searched PubMed, ISI, SciELO and Scopus from December 2011 to June 2013 using the following keywords: physical exercise, quality of life, elderly, depression, Alzheimer's disease. Only six studies met inclusion criteria: two examined patients with AD and four, patients with depression.RESULTS: The studies used different methods to prescribe exercise and evaluate QoL, but all had high quality methods. Findings of most studies with individuals with depression suggested that exercise training improved QoL, but studies with patients with AD had divergent results.CONCLUSIONS: Although different methods were used, results suggested that physical exercise is an effective non-pharmacological intervention to improve the QoL of elderly individuals with depression and AD. Future studies should investigate the effect of other factors, such as the use of specific scales for the elderly, controlled exercise prescriptions and type of control groups.

Under such context of people-oriented concept and an increase in the proportion of the elderly in the population, our country has seen a mature development in the interior design industry, thus more attention has been paid to the living space of the elder group. However, the present situation of this industry shows that the design standard for old people wasn't promoted effectively. Concerning their psychological characteristics and the psychological needs of the elderly primarily, the point of this article lies in figuring out the proper design to resolve the old people’ knots, thus achieving their sense of belonging, improving the quality of life in their later years, even extending their life, to create a real home for old people.

ABSTRACT According to the WHO, by 2025 Brazil will be ranked sixth in the world in terms of proportion of elderly in the population. Within this scope, cognition plays a central role in the aging process, having an important association with quality of life, which suggests the need to develop intervention programs, such as cognitive training. Objective: To determine the effects of a program of cognitive stimulation workshops on the self-esteem and cognition of elderly people. Methods: Thirty-eight elderly subjects completed the three-step protocol: 1) Survey of demographic data and evaluation of cognition by a neuropsychological battery and of self-esteem using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSS), prior to training; 2) Participation in twelve cognitive stimulation workshops; and 3) Cognitive evaluation and RSS after the training. Results: Results showed that the use of training produced positive effects on cognitive test performance of the elderly with and without cognitive impairment. By extension, this demonstrates positive impact on their self-esteem. Conclusion: These findings encourage investment in cognitive stimulation programs as a resource for improved cognition and quality of life for the elderly. Subjective cognitive complaint may have served as a predictor of decreased self-esteem; therefore, as training improved cognition, it also improved self-esteem.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.Because of the population of the old people is increasing remarkably in today's society, due to the development of the standard of medical science and technique, there is the positive significance in improving old people's physique and health by understanding their present constitutional situation and health condition, and in studying in aging regulations and the function of anti-aging by doing exercise. The article has tested the function and sports quality of the subjects, part of whom are the retired staffs in some universities in Beijing, and others are the members of the Jogging Club of Old People. It is manifested that Most of the indexes in function and sports quality were significant better in aerobic exercise group than in common group no matter of males or females. It is concluded that longterm regular aerobic exercise can slow down the declining speed of cardio-pulmonary function, and maintain and improve the sports quality of old people.

This paper analyzes the causes and consequences of the increasedtrend of population aging in contemporary society expressed in severalprevious decades. This refers to increasing the share of the populationaged between 60 and 65 years and over (chronological criteriaare defined in the modern age in relation to age in which the workingactivity stops, they can not be applied to African countries), thatis the share of the elderly population of 7 (and more) percent of thetotal population. As a result, we have the increased number of demographicallyold societies. Aging is a biological process, but also a socialconstruct, because at different times and in different societies are differentlyset boundaries of age, attitude towards aging, status of elderlypeople and the like. The most important demographic characteristicsthat cause aging of the population in modern society are: lower fertility, lower mortality (especially the older groups) and migrations.Accelerated aging of the population undermines the economic and socialbalance in the society in which it is expressed (increased pressureon funds of social, health and pension protection) it requires the increasedinvestment effort to deal with this problem and its resolution, but there are consequences for individuals (loss of autonomy , loneliness, illness, etc.). In recent years, the attitude towards old people andthe experience of aging have changed due to an improvement of theoverall quality of life (working and living conditions, progress in thefield of medicine), which gives an opportunity to the people of this ageto lead a full life of different activities (travel, education , acquisitionof new skills and the like.). Although progress was made in terms ofhuman rights, quality of life and the situation of old people in society, there are still various problems that they face (social exclusion, poverty, violence, etc.). In contemporary society have beeb undertakenvarious activities which aim to promote a positive attitude towardsthe old (er) people and to prevent discrimination based on age.

Objective To evaluate the influence exercised by institutionalization on the autonomy and perception of quality of life among the institutionalized elderly. Method The study is quasi-experimental (interrupted time series) and longitudinal. The sample is composed for 104 elderly people who went into a three nursing home in Santander, Spain. To assess the quality of life and dependence two scales were used: the Barthel Index and Lawton Index. Results There was an important relationship between autonomy and independence and their deterioration due to their institutionalisation, such as the physical and social aspects. Conclusion It´s important to point out that the dependence of the elderly is a complex phenomenon, which admits many types of intervention, including the customary ones referring to more classic welfare actions which tend to supplant the absence of autonomy in everyday life by facilitating services and attention to make up for this need, without having to resort to institutionalization.

The causes of forgetfulness episodes in the elderly can occur for a variety of reasons, among which we highlight the presence of dementia, which can negatively infer senile cognition, memory, language and communication. Dementia is a condition in which the individual loses part of the brain functions, causing neurological deficits that directly affect his quality of life. This study discusses the importance of Neuropsychological Assessment as a fundamental tool for the diagnosis of degenerative disease, before the complaints of oblivion related to the advancing age. The results indicated that the use of this method of examination can indicate the therapeutic intervention in an adequate time, allowing the improvement of the quality of life for the elderly.
