The objective of the study was to evaluate the growth and reproductive performances of Hilly Brown Bengal (HBB) goats of different generations and conducted at Naikhongchari Regional Station Research Farm of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute. Goats were reared in a plastic slated floor under semi-intensive system and were allowed to graze for 6-7 hours per day. Animals were given a concentrate mixture containing 17% CP, 11 MJ ME/kg DM provided twice daily in the morning and evening at the rate of 1% of their body weight. All goats were kept separately according to sex and age groups to avoid random mating. Natural mating program was performed to improve the economically important traits. Goats were de-wormed and diping on regular intervals and only PPR vaccine was given at the age of 2 months. Data on productive, reproductive and disease incidence of goat were recorded regularly and were analyzed. Results showed that Kid Birth Weight of HBB goats were significantly (P<0.01) differ among generations. Birth weight of G3 (1.21±0.013 kg) was higher than G5, G4, G2 and G1 (1.11±0.01 kg). Goat body weight of 3, 6 and 9 months age were non-significant among generations. The age and weight at first conception were significantly (p<0.05) differ among generation. Age at first conception was lower of G4 (301.57±9.06 days) and higher of G1 (259.80±18.87 days) but body weight at first conception of G1 (12.23±0.47 kg) was higher and G4 was lower (10.65±0.52 kg). Age at first kidding, gestation length and kidding interval was not significant (P>.05) effect on generations. Parity had no significant (P>.05) effect on kid birth weight but significantly (p<0.01) differ of Kid litter weight and litter size. According to birth type single kid was highest birth weight (1.21±0.08 kg) than double kid followed by triplet and quadruplet. Mortality percentage of HBB kids at the age of 0-90 days were 13.08±0.23%. It may be concluded that kid birth weight, age and weight at first conception of HBB goat were significantly (P<.05) affected on generation but age at first kidding, gestation length and kidding interval were non significantly (P<.05) affected. Curves of growth in live-weight, from birth to 16 weeks of age, of 362 Suffolk × Welsh lambs were analysed for the effect of sex, birth type, sire and test centre environment and related to variation in age at slaughter.The relative pre-natal disadvantages of twin lambs resulted in their curves of growth differing from those of single-born animals, particularly in males. Test centre environment exerted a marked effect in such cases. At one centre, male twins showed marked compensatory growth.Differences in growth existed between the 14 sire progeny groups. As the linear component of the growth curves decreased, the quadratic values became increasingly negative. Deceleration of growth was most marked in slowest growing progeny groups and this was accentuated by a poor test centre environment.These factors combined to influence age at slaughter, which was also related to birth weight of the lamb. Lambs at the best test centre reached slaughter weight 10 and 16 days earlier than lambs at the two remaining centres. Sires produced differences in age at slaughter of 10 to 14 days, within centres.

Variance components, heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated using progeny records of 73 sires on the Young Sire Proving Program (YSPP) of the Canadian Simmental Association. The YSPP was based on random mating of 58 test and 15 reference sires to cows in cooperating herds. Data were collected on several traits but the ones of interest in this study were gestation length (GL), calving ease (CE) and birth weight (BW). Variance and covariance components were estimated using Henderson's method 3. Heritability estimates were 0.24, 0.06 and 0.19 for GL, CE and BW, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlations were negative between GL and CE and CE and BW. Correlations between GL and BW were moderate and positive. Selection programs, utilizing large numbers of progeny per sire, would be effective but should incorporate the correlations between these traits. Goat rearing under semi intensive farming conditions is characterized by high kid mortality and low weaning weight percentages. The root cause which needs to be addressed for various diseases and parasites leading to low body weight gain and kid mortality is improper housing practises. The welfare of Black Bengal goats as a source of sustainable livelihood is a burning issue since the beginning thus the researchers for so many years have tried to assess ideal housing system for these goats in context to their geographical climate to optimize their production and welfare, still the reports are scarce in this arena. The experimental platform based goat housing system was constructed for 20 farmers with an average flock size of 16 goats in flood ridden Dasmankula village of Marsaghai block Kendrapara district where various families adopted traditional practises of goat farming for sustainable livelihood. This is the first report from Odisha in context of housing pattern of Black Bengal goats where it was observed that a change in housing practise along with proper vaccination schedule led to significant decrease in mortality percentage of goats. The results showed that the body weight increased linearly as the age advanced and the body weight of adult goats at 10 months of age at platform based housing was 9.82 ± 0.74 and 9.12 ± 0.53 as compared to 8.78 ± 0.68 and 7.82 ± 0.42 in mud and slotted floor in males and females, respectively. The platform raised housing system was effective in decreasing gastrointestinal parasite load and thus early recovery from disease incidence as Contagious Echthyma (ORF). Mortality percentage of goat was significantly reduced after adopting the platform based housing system along with proper vaccination schedule due to establishment of better immune system which was directly proportional to decreased parasitic load in this experimental housing system. However, impact on change in body weight was not significant in kids but somewhat noticeable in case of adults which proved to be a great boon for the goat farmers of Dasmankula village.

In this study, growth performance of Akkaraman lambs and some fertility parameters of Akkaraman sheep raised in semi extensive farm conditions were investigated. A total of 6300 heads Akkaraman ewes (6000 ewes and 300 rams) housed in 34 farms located in central villages of Niğde province were evaluated between 2012 and 2016. The data of birth weight of 30161 lambs, body weight of 29517 lambs aged 90 days old and some fertility parameters of 30000 heads ewes were used. The average lambing rate of ewes was found 90.1%. The twining rate of ewes was 20.8%; the average litter size was 1.12 lambs. Birth weights of Akkaraman sheep lambs was 4.23 kg, average 90th day live weights were 23.05 kg. Effects of year, birth type, dam age, and sex were found statistically significant on birth and 90-day live weights of the Akkaraman lambs. As a result, it was concluded that the fertility of Akkaraman sheep and growth characteristics of lambs raised by public under semi-extensive conditions could be improved and the economic situation of sheep farms could be better by the implementation such improvement project.

AbstractThe objective of this study was to examine genetic changes in reproduction traits in sows (total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), average piglet birth weight (ABW) and number of piglets weaned (NW), body weight prior to mating (MW), gestation length (GL) and daily food intake during lactation (DFI)) in lines of Large White pigs divergently selected over 4 years for high and low post-weaning growth rate on a restricted ration. Heritabilities and repeatabilities of the reproduction traits were also determined. The analyses were carried out on 913 litter records using average information-restricted maximum likelihood method applied to single trait animal models. Estimates of heritability for most traits were small, except for ABW (0·33) and MW (0·35). Estimates of repeatability were slightly higher than those of heritability for TNB, NBA and NW, but they were almost identical for ABW, MW, GL and DFI. After 4 years of selection, the high growth line sows had significantly heavier body weight prior to mating and produced significantly more piglets born alive with heavier average birth weight than the low line sows. There were, however, no statistical differences between the selected lines in TNB or NW. The lower food intake of high relative to low line sows during lactation was not significant, indicating that daily food intake differences found between grower pigs in the high and low lines (2·71 v. 2·76 kg/day, s.e.d. 0·024) on ad libitum feeding were not fully expressed in lactating sows. It is concluded that selection for growth rate on the restricted ration resulted in beneficial effects on important measures of reproductive performance of thea sows.

Research material included data on gestation length of 15 436 cows of Polish native breeds. These were: White Backed (BG; 324 records), Polish Red (RP; 5396 records), Polish Black and White (ZB; 3508 records), and Polish Red and White (ZR; 6208 records). The calvings took place in 2005–2009, and we analysed two calving seasons, lactation number, the degree of calving difficulty, sex, and body weight of newborn calves. The effect of birth year on gestation length and birth weight of offspring was statistically significant, whereas calving season had statistically highly significant effect on both. Gestation length in the analysed breeds was 281.02, 283.35, 280.5, 281.53 for BG, RP, ZB, and ZR, respectively. The birth body weight heritability was 0.13 (RP), 0.33 (ZB) and 0.40 (ZR).

The examination was made on the effect of systematic factors (parturition group, calving season, birth type, calf gender, and birth type-calf gender interaction) and age at first conception on the expression of reproductive traits (gestation length, service period, fertility intensity and calf birth weight) in 143 Simmental cows. The overall mean (?) for gestation length, service period, intercalving period and calf birth weight was 284.14 days, 153.82 days, 416.92 days and 35.40 kg, respectively. The parturition group effect on all fertility traits was highly significant (P<0.01). The calving season statistically significantly (P<0.05) affected the intercalving period and calf birth weight. Birth type induced very significantly longer gestation (P<0.01) and higher calf birth weight in singles (P<0.01) and significantly longer service period in twins (P<0.05). Calf gender had a very significant effect (P<0.01) only on calf birth weight, and the interaction between birth type and calf gender significantly affected gestation duration only (P<0.05). The regression effect of age at first conception on all fertility traits was not significant (P>0.05).

In spite of the fact that there are many sheep breeds in Iran, few studies have been established with respect to their economical traits. Moghani sheep is one of the best Iranian meat type breeds with a 5.5 million population. Some specifications of this breed include Resistance to weather conditions, big body size and ability to producing heavy lambs. The aim of this research was to survey the environmental effects and estimates of genetic parameters for birth weight (BW), average daily gain from birth to three mounts of age (ADG1), three months age weight (TRW), average daily gain from three to six months age (ADG2), six months age weight (SIW), nine months age weight (NIW), yearly weight (twelve months age weight or TWW), lamb fleece weight (LFW) and yearly greasy fleece weight in mature sheep (YFW). The effect of birth year, ewe’s gestation period (or age for yearling greasy fleece weight), birth type and sex as fixed effect and sires (nested in years) as random effect on aforesaid traits were studied.

An experiment was conducted at AZ-Zahra Farm, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia to investigate the productive and reproductive performance of Saanen dairy goat. Body weight at different ages were collected once while birth weight was collected when does gave birth. On the other hand, milk production of each individual per day was received continuously for three months. The data on reproductive parameters such as length of estrus cycle, duration of estrus period, age at puberty, gestation length, age at first kidding, litter size, birth weight and kid mortality were noted. Descriptive statistics such as number, percentage, mean, standard deviation were performed. T-test was also conducted to know the statistical difference between the groups. Result demonstrated that body weight increases significantly (p<0.01) with the advancement of the age. The highest daily milk yield was found in 2-3 years of age. Dam with multiple kids produced more milk than dam with single kid. Estrus cycle of Saanen goats was found 21 days, the average estrus period duration was 2.75 days, age at puberty was 8.33 months, first kidding age was 14.2 months and gestation period was 150 days on an average. With the increase of the age of dam litter size increased. Meanwhile average birth weight increased as age of dam increased from 2.85 kg in 1 year to 3.26 kg in 3 years. Male kids born heavier than females (3.23±0.62 vs. 2.75±0.58 kg) and single kids were heavier than twin kids (3.07±0.66 kgvs2.70±0.28 kg). Low mortality rate of kids was recorded in this study (6.4%). It can be concluded that the overall productive and reproductive performances of Saanen goat at AZ-Zahra farm were within the acceptable level and the variation recorded in different parameters is very much usual.
