The present study was the first postmortem examination of a barn owl in Bangladesh. A female Barn owl weighing 450grams was brought to the Teaching Veterinary Hospital (TVH) at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) by the forest department, Chittagong. The history of traumatic injury on left wing by an electric fan one day back was recorded. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed an open overriding proximal left metacarpal fracture and was decided for pinning to correct the fracture. Retrograde intramedullary pinning was performed and immobilized the wing by bandage. At postoperative day one, owl was found death and PM was performed to find out the actual clues. Gross postmortem examination revealed chalky whitish layer formed over the heart and liver which indicates pericarditis and perihepatitis. Hemorrhage in the left thigh muscle was also observed. Biochemical examination revealed salmonella organism in the samples of liver and heart. Histopathological examination found tissue changes in the suspected organs. In conclusion, it is revealed that the probable causes of death were inanition, pain shock, unfavorable environment and with salmonella infection.International Journal of Natural Sciences (2014), 4(2) 34-37

Medulla oblongata teratomas are rare. The authors report 2 new cases of teratomas that occurred exclusively in the medulla oblongata. The first case was in a 9-year-old boy who presented with a 6-month history of neck pain and repeated paroxysmal vomiting. Based on preoperative radiographic findings, the initial diagnosis was of an intraaxial medulla oblongata hemangioblastoma. Intraoperatively, the cystic component of the tumor was gray, gelatinous, and soft in consistency. The solid component was light pink, rubbery, and nodular in appearance, with an identifiable boundary. The lesion was completely removed. Histopathological investigation revealed a mature teratoma. Postoperatively, the patient was supported with ventilator assistance and received a tracheotomy, but died of intracranial infection. The second case was in a 10-year-old boy with intermittent headache for 1 month. Radiographs revealed an exophytic cystic and solid lesion with dorsal involvement of the medulla oblongata. The lesion was predominantly solid, pinkish gray, tenacious, and moderately vascularized, with clearly delineated surgical dissection planes. The histopathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of immature teratoma. Total resection was achieved, followed by postoperative chemotherapy. He was alive without recurrence of the lesion or symptoms at 59 months after surgery. Resection of medulla oblongata teratoma is challenging, with inherent surgical risks that are contingent on the tumor growth pattern. Teratomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of brainstem lesions. Chemotherapy has been suggested for immature teratomas. Long-term follow-up and larger studies of teratomas in unusual locations are required to improve practitioners' understanding of this disease's treatment and outcomes.

Abstract Background: Glioma is the most common tumor occurring in the brainstem. A primary intraparenchymal meningioma located in the brainstem without dura attachment is rare. Meanwhile, atypical meningiomas that occur in the medulla oblongata parenchyma, and without dura coverage, are extremely rare. In this study, we report the first case of atypical meningioma in the medulla oblongata parenchyma and review the existing literature.Case presentation: A 38-year-old female was admitted at our hospital with a 2-week history of progressive neck and occipital pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a presence of a 1.5x0.9cm mass lesion, located in the left side of the medulla oblongata, which was hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted images, and with inhomogeneous enhancement following gadolinium-diethylenet-riamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) administration. The initial preoperative diagnosis was glioma or angioblastoma. The patient underwent a total surgical resection of the left medulla oblongata tumor and the histopathological examination indicated that the lesion was an atypical meningioma. The patient returned to normal life after surgery. Conclusions: Although glioma is the most common tumor occurring in the brainstem parenchyma, the possibility of meningioma cannot be ruled out in this area.

Two cases are presented where the odontomas had caused the impaction of the anterior teeth and required a combined surgical and orthodontic treatment to bring these teeth into the arch. In the first case a large a complex odontome had caused the impaction of the right central incisor, lateral incisor and canine. In the second case a compound odontome blocked the eruption pathway of the right central incisor. It is emphasised that radiographic examination of all pediatric patients that present clinical evidence of delayed permanent tooth eruption or temporary tooth displacement with or without a history of previous dental trauma should be performed. Early diagnosis of odontomas allows adoption of a less complex and less expensive treatment and ensures a better prognosis.

We present a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei, a species whose habitat is probably the soil, first identified in 1934 by Arêa Leão and Lobo in a case of podal eumycetoma with white-yellowish grains and initially named Cephalosporium recifei. A white immunocompetent female patient from the state of Bahia, Brazil, with a history of traumatic injury to the right hand is reported. The lesion was painless, with edema, inflammation and the presence of fistulae. Seropurulent secretion with the absence of grains was present. Histopathological examination of material stained with hematoxylin-eosin showed hyaline septate hyphae. A culture was positive for Acremonium recifei. Treatment with itraconazole, 200 mg/day, for two months led to a favorable course and cure of the process. We report for the first time in the literature a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei in a immunocompetent woman. Treatment with itraconazole 200 mg/day, for two months, resulted in cure.

Introduction. Although pyogenic granulomas (PG) are common and benign vascular proliferations of the skin and mucous membranes, they are relatively rare on the vulva.Case Presentation. A 57-year-old G7P7 postmenopausal woman presented with a 3-year history of a foul smell and bleeding lesions in the genital region. A gynecologic examination revealed multiple large papillomatous, pedunculated, and lobulated lesions that were cherry-red and infective in appearance. There was a 2-cm lesion at the upper intersection of the labia majora, a 2-cm lesion on the right labium majus, and a 4-cm lesion on the clitoris. The patient complained of itching, and the lesions were asymptomatic, except for occasional bleeding. All lesions were excised and sent for histopathological examination, which revealed an ulcerated polypoidal structure with extensive proliferation of vascular channels lined by a single layer of endothelium. The histopathological features were consistent with PG.Conclusion. The present case is the first case of multiple pyogenic granulomas on the vulva in a postmenopausal woman.

Present study was carried out on sudden death cases brought to the institute either as brought dead or died during treatment with 24 hours of admission and forwarded by the investigating officer for medico-legal postmortem examination. Various parameters were collected such as age, length and weight of the body, history of chest pain, vomiting etc. Out of 61 deceased examined, 50 were male and 11 were female. Commonest age group was 46 – 55 years followed by 36 -45 and 56 – 65 years of age. Vegetarians (50) and tobacco chewing (47) outnumber the all other causes. Individuals are having indoor working place (44) are more affected than the outdoor workers (17). Commonly affected individuals were having body weight between 61 -70 kg (Mean 65.5 kg) and body length 160-169 cm (Mean 164.5cm). There is no correlation was observed between the sudden death and BMI. Left coronary artery affected more as compared to right one. The histopathological examination revealed positive result in 35 cases (57%) out of which, acute myocardial infarction in 13 cases and in 22 cases presence of healed myocardial infarction while in 26 cases there was no changes observed.

A 30-year-old Caucasian man presented with an 18-month history of an asymptomatic calcified mass, located on the buccal side of the alveolar ridge. Medical records did not present any underlying conditions. On intraoral examination, the lesion was located on the right side of the maxilla, showing mucosal fenestration with mineralized tissue measuring approximately 1 cm in diameter. Radiographic examination showed multiple radiopaque masses. Incisional biopsy was performed, and histological analysis revealed a presence of enamel matrix, dentin, and cementum, resembling tooth-like structures. Surgical removal was offered after the diagnostic confirmation of peripheral odontoma, but the patient refused because of the asymptomatic nature of the lesion.

An unusual form of cerebellocortical degeneration called cerebellar granuloprival degeneration was diagnosed in a four-month-old Chihuahua. The dog had a two-week history of progressive signs of cerebellar dysfunction, including a wide-based stance, intention tremors and bilateral absence of menace response without visual impairment. On MRI of the encephalon, a reduction in cerebellar size was detected. On histopathological examination, depletion of the cerebellar granule cell layer was observed, in addition to neuronal degeneration in the vestibular nuclei, reticular formation, red nucleus and internal laminae of the parietal and temporal cortices. A diagnosis of cerebellar granuloprival degeneration with trans-synaptic degeneration was made. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report of cerebellar granuloprival degeneration in a Chihuahua and the first report of cerebellar granuloprival degeneration with trans-synaptic degeneration in a dog.

Avian Pasteurellosis is a contagious disease of domestic and wild birds caused by Pasteurellamutocida. A turkey farm with a flock size of 500  recorded an acute death of about 102 turkeys with the history of clinical symptoms such as respiratory distress, anorexia, mucoid discharge from mouth and the nostrils, diarrhea were presented to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary College. On thorough postmortem examination, a salient finding of petechial haemorrhages with pinpoint necrotic spots though out the liver parenchyma was observed along with pneumonic changes in lungs and vascular changes in trachea, spleen and intestines. On histopathological examination, liver revealed multifocal areas of coagulative necrosis and haemorrhages. Heart showed separation, fragmentation and degeneration of fibers with extensive inter-muscular haemorrhages. Lungs were congested with haemorrhages and pneumonic changes. Based on history, gross & histopathological lesions and impression smear examination after staining with geimsa and methylene blue, the case was diagnosed as Avian Pasteurellosis.

A 2-year-old multiparous (Case 1) and a 2.5-year-old nulliparous (Case 2) Djungarian hamster each presented with a history of a prolapsed mass from the vulva. A partial uterine prolapse was diagnosed in both cases, according to the clinical and diagnostic examinations. The prolapsed mass was replaced in each hamster, and an ovariohysterectomy was performed. The histopathological examination of the removed tissues revealed a cyst and papillary hyperplasia in the ovary. This first case report, to our knowledge, demonstrates the possibility of a uterine prolapse with a cyst and papillary hyperplasia in the ovary and how to surgically manage this condition. The report could also contribute to having a better understanding of the occurrence of a uterine prolapse without parturition in hamsters.
