Objective: The present study was done to see the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of bacterial isolates from wound infection.Methods: Wound swabs collected from 150 patients of wound infection were cultured and microbial isolates identified using standard methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done on bacterial isolates by Modified Kirby Bauer method.Results: Of the 150 swabs 131 (87.4%) were culture positive for bacterial pathogens, while 19 (12.6%) were bacteriologically sterile showing an isolation rate of 87.4%. The predominant bacteria isolated from the infected wounds were Staphylococcus aureus 47 (32.4%) followed by Escherichia coli 29 (20%), Proteus species 23 (16%), Coagulase negative Staphylococci 21 (14.5%), Klebsiella pneumoniae 14 (10%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 11 (8%).In case of gram positive bacteria- rate of isolates resistant to ampicillin was 94%, followed by penicillin G, 86.8%, Tetracycline, 51.5%. In case of gram negative bacteria- rate of isolates resistant to ampicillin was 96%, followed by cephalothin, 92.4%, Tetracycline, 74%.Conclusion: In antimicrobial susceptibility testing ampicillin, penicillin, cephalothin and tetracycline were the least effective. Gentamicin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin and amikacin were the most effective antibiotics.TAJ 2013; 26: 61-66

BACKGROUND Urinary tract Infection (UTI) are the most common clinical conditions in general practice and gynaecological department. Men and women of all age groups are affected by UTI, but its overall prevalence is higher in women. The major causative agents are Escherichia coli and other Enterobacteriaceae. In majority of the cases, empirically treatment is started with antimicrobials before the urine culture and sensitivity reports become available. This has led to an increase in antibiotic resistance in urinary pathogens. Hence, the present study was undertaken to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of uropathogens to commonly used antimicrobials in treating UTIs. METHODS A total of 200 urine samples were obtained from patients with signs and symptoms suggestive of UTIs attending Bapuji and Chigateri General Hospital which are attached to Jagadguru Jayadeva Murugarajendra Medical College (JJMMC), Davangere for a period of 3 months that is from May 2016 to July 2016. Urine samples were processed within 2 hours of reaching the laboratory. Semi quantitative urine culture was done. Isolation and identification were done by performing standard biochemical tests and the antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done using the standard disc diffusion method by Kirby-Bauer technique. RESULTS There were 170 urinary isolates from 200 samples. Children less than 10 years were more affected 54 (27 %). Female patients were more, 119 (59.5 %) compared to males 81 (40.5 %). Escherichia coli was the most predominant isolate, 71 (41.8 %) followed by Enterococcus species 22 (1.9 %). Organisms were resistant to commonly used antibiotics i.e., cotrimoxazole, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and amoxicillin. Both gram negative and gram-positive isolates were sensitive to amikacin and nitrofurantoin. CONCLUSIONS In present study Escherichia coli is the predominant pathogen. Uncomplicated UTIs can be empirically treated by nitrofurantoin. Occurrence of treatment failure with commonly used antimicrobials is more often in Indian setting. Hence, antimicrobial susceptibility testing must be employed routinely. KEY WORDS UTIs, Uropathogens, E. coli, Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern

Abstract Background Bacterial infections are a significant cause of sickness and death in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed at establishing the prevalence, distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of major bacterial isolates from patients accessing medical care at a tertiary hospital in Malawi. Methods We retrospectively reviewed bacteria culture and antimicrobial susceptibility records for 4617 patients from 2002 to 2014 at Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH). No inclusion and exclusion criteria were followed. Data was analysed using excel (Microsoft office, USA) and GraphPad prism 7 software programs. Results The most prevalent isolates were S. aureus (34.7%, n = 783), Klebsiella species (17.4%, n = 393) and Proteus species (11.4%, n = 256). Most microorganisms were isolated from adults (88.3%, n = 3889) and pus was the main source (69.3%, n = 1224). S. pneumoniae was predominantly isolated from cerebrospinal fluid (60.3%, n = 44) largely collected from children (88.2%, n = 64). Overall, most bacteria exhibited high resistance to all regularly used antimicrobials excluding ciprofloxacin. Conclusions Our report demonstrates an increase in bacterial infection burden in sites other than blood stream and subsequent increase in prevalence of antimicrobial resistance for all major isolates. Creating an epidemiological survey unit at MCH will be essential to help inform better treatment and management options for patients with bacterial infections.

Antibiotic susceptibility patterns for Yersinia enterocolitica strains involving 10 different serotypes were analyzed and compared. All Y. enterocolitica were susceptible to colistin, gentamicin, kanamycin, neomycin and doxycycline, whereas all isolates displayed resistance to penicillin G, methicillin (derivative of penicillin), novobiocin, and clindamycin. The antibiograms for the Y. enterocolitica isolates were in some instances related to the somatic serotypes, especially serotype 0:8 for which the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern displayed the greatest disparity. By eliminating the antibiograms for the four serotype 0:8 strains, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for atypical and typical strains were similar.

ABSTRACT Accurate detection of methicillin resistance among staphylococci is vital for patient care. Methicillin resistance is most commonly mediated by acquisition of the mecA gene, which encodes an altered penicillin binding protein, PBP2a. Application of phenotypic methods to detect mecA-mediated beta-lactam resistance in staphylococci is becoming more complex as species-specific differences are identified among coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). Previously, interpretative criteria and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods specific to the CoNS group were used to evaluate Staphylococcus epidermidis. A manuscript by S. N. Naccache, K. Callan, C.-A. D. Burnham, M. A. Wallace, et al. (J Clin Microbiol 57:e00961-19, 2019, https://doi.org/10.1128/JCM.00961-19) details experiments revealing that S. epidermidis, the most common clinically isolated CoNS, requires tailored use of previously described methods and interpretive criteria to reliably identify the presence of mecA-mediated methicillin resistance.
