The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of using WhatsApp on developing fifth grade EFL students’ speaking skill during the first semester of the academic year 2020-2021. To achieve this purpose, the researchers selected carefully a representative sample of 46 male students studying at Jijin Secondary School for Boys. The participants were already divided into two groups; a control group of 21 students and an experimental one of 25 students. This study tended to apply this experiment by using the quasi-experimental method. The instrument was a performance test in a shape of an interview that was used as a pre-test and a post-test. Moreover, this test was used to measure any possible differences between the both groups. The results of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences between both of the groups and the mean scores, in favor of the experimental one in speaking due to the suggested strategy of using WhatsApp.In the light of the findings, the researchers recommend the necessity of implementing contemporary strategies such as WhatsApp in teaching and learning English speaking skill. Besides, the researchers suggest that further studies should be conducted on the effect of WhatsApp on developing other English language skills and in other language competences.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) seems worthy to investigate since it applies a language other than the students mother tongue used as a medium of instruction. In this research, the researcher aims to portray two objectives, namely identifying whether CLIL method is effective to improve students factual report writing skill, and examining students attitude towards the implementation of this method. This research employs a quasi-experimental design through applying two instruments, namely tests which consists pre-test and post-test, and questionnaires. 60 students of eleventh-grade social class of a state senior high school in Kuningan are involved in the research. They are divided into a control and an experimental group. Tests are analysed quantitatively to identify the first research objective, questionnaires are analysed with descriptive statistic to examine the second research objective. The result taken from independent t-test shows that there is a significant difference on the students writing skill since the level of significant is lower than the alpha (0.000<0.005) which indicates that CLIL is effective in improving students writing skill. Furthermore, the result taken from questionnaires portrays that students show positive attitude towards the implementation of CLIL in teaching and learning process. Keywords: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), factual report, writing skill

Instructional method is an important aspect of teaching and learning to determine the activities of teachers and students. Appropriate instructional methods influence many motivational variables of learners such as a tendency to think critically. This research aims to determine the effects of usage of instructional methods for training students’ thinking skill on environmental learning. This study is the quasi-experimental design of post-test only. Two equivalent student groups in secondary school were offered a topic on environmental learning with different instructional methods. The instructional methods were laboratory method and discussion method. The teacher was given to the first group using laboratory method, while the second group was given using discussion method. The effectiveness of different instructional methods was measured quantitatively by an achievement test. The analysis result of post-test showed that there was significantly different between the first group and the second group at a significance level of 0.05 for the interest of the first group. According to these findings, we suggest applying laboratory method instead of discussion method for training students’ thinking skill on environmental learning.

We aimed to contribute to a shift in higher education teaching and learning methods by considering problem-based learning (PBL) as an approach capable of positively affecting students from a geology and environment (GE) curricular unit. In a convenience sample from a Portuguese public university, two groups of students were defined: (1) an experimental group (n = 16), to which an intervention program (IP) based on PBL was applied, and (2) a comparison group (n = 17), subjected to the traditional teaching approach. For nine weeks, students subject to the IP faced four problem scenarios about different themes. A triangulation of methods was chosen. The study involved two phases: (1) qualitative (sustained on content analysis of driving questions raised by students, registered in a monitoring sheet) and (2) quantitative (quasi-experimental study, based on data from a prior and post-test knowledge assessment). The qualitative results point to the development of more complex cognitive-level questioning skills after increasing familiarity with PBL. The data obtained in the quantitative study, which included both a “within-subjects” and a “between-subjects” design, show higher benefits in the experimental group, documenting gains in terms of scientific knowledge when using the PBL methodology.
