Background: Discomfort during the puerperium period is very frequent in the lives of women but the influence of this discomfort on the women’s quality of life has been little studied. The objective of this study is to establish the association between discomfort and frequent problems of women in the puerperium and their quality of life score. Methods: A cross-sectional study on postpartum Spanish women was performed. Women older than 18 years and who had had a live birth were included. Less than 1% of women refused to participate in the study. Data were collected on socio-demographic, obstetric and newborn variables, on maternal problems/ discomfort in the postnatal period and on parameters that are quality of life indicators. An ad hoc online questionnaire which included the SF-36 Health Survey was used. Crude mean difference (cMD) and adjusted mean difference (aMD) were calculated through multiple linear regression. Results: 2990 women participated in the study. The greater problems causing quality of life loss were depressive symptoms (aMD = −12.40, CI 95%: −10.79, −14.01), lactation problems (aMD = −4.30, CI 95%: −2.97, −5.63), problems for sexual intercourse after childbirth (aMD = −6.34, CI 95%: −5.07, −7.60) and urinary incontinence (aMD = −4.97, CI 95%: −6.30, −3.65), among others. These have been detected as risk factors that affect the quality of life of the postpartum woman. Conclusions: The discomfort and problems manifested in the 6 weeks after childbirth have an influence that deeply affects the quality of life of postpartum women.

Abstract Background The Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration released the Safe Importation Action Plan in July 2020 detailing methods to import medicines from Canada to combat increasing drug costs. In November 2020, Florida became the first state in the United States to create and propose an importation plan from Canada. This study examines the proposal submitted by Florida, Florida pharmacists’ perceptions of the program on patient safety, and Florida pharmacists’ thoughts on the pharmacy operational impact. Methods This was a cross-sectional study utilizing an electronic questionnaire sent to pharmacist members of the Florida Pharmacy Association. The survey incorporated closed-ended and open-ended questions. The results from the study were reported and analyzed through descriptive statistics, qualitative and quantitative data. Results Two-hundred and forty-four pharmacists responded to the survey. Of those respondents, 25% stated they had no knowledge about Florida’s drug importation plan. Less than 12% of respondents stated they would trust the safety and quality of imported medicines. Seventy percent of pharmacists expressed concerns regarding the changes required in pharmacy operations to increase medicine safety. About half of the respondents questioned whether this plan would promote cost-savings as intended. Conclusion Florida pharmacists believe the drug importation plan does not address all aspects of patient and medicine safety and expressed concerns regarding logistical operations of a pharmacy. This article highlights those concerns and acts as a summons to action.

Introduction: The satisfaction with the medical profession has been identified as an essential factor for the quality of care, the wellbeing of patients and the healthcare systems’ stability. Recent studies have emphasized a growing discontent of physicians, mainly as a result of changes in labor relations.
Objectives: To assess the perception of Portuguese medical residents about: correspondence of residency with previous expectations; degree of satisfaction with the specialty, profession and place of training; reasons for dissatisfaction; opinion regarding clinical practice in Portugal and emigration intents.
Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study. Data collection was conducted through the “Satisfaction with Specialization Survey”, created in an online platform, designed for this purpose, between May and August 2014.
Results: From a total population of 5788 medical residents, 804 (12.25 %) responses were obtained. From this sample, 77% of the responses were from residents in the first three years. Results showed that 90% of the residents are satisfied with their specialty, 85% with the medical profession and 86% with their place of training. Nevertheless, results showed a decrease in satisfaction over the final years of residency. The overall assessment of the clinical practice scenario in Portugal was negative and 65% of residents have plans to emigrate after completing their residency.
Conclusion: Portuguese residents revealed high satisfaction levels regarding their profession. However, their views on Portuguese clinical practice and the results concerning the intent to emigrate highlight the need to take steps to reverse this scenario.

Objective To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of headache and its relationship with comorbidities and lifestyle in a teenage population. Methods This is a cross-sectional study. Data was collected from students aged 12–18 years from six different schools in Catalonia, Spain. They completed an anonymous questionnaire with demographic, lifestyle, medical data, presence of recurrent headaches and its features, and completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. We defined probable migraine if headache presented ≥ 3 ICHD-3 beta criteria for migraine. An analysis was performed to evaluate headache characteristics and compare lifestyles between those with or without headache. Results 1619 out of 1873 students completed the survey (response rate 86.4%). From these, 30.5% suffered from recurrent headache and 11.3% had migraine features; 32.9% of adolescents with headache had at least one episode per week and 44.1% showed some degree of headache-related disability measured by the PedMIDAS scale. In a univariate analysis, headache was significantly more frequent in girls (35.1% vs. 25.5%, p < 0.001), teenagers with poor sleeping habits (36.6% vs. 27.6%, p < 0.001), lower physical activity ( p = 0.002), those who did not have breakfast (37.3 vs. 28.4%, p = 0.001), smokers (10.5% vs. 4.9%, p < 0.001) and caffeine overusers (30.9% vs. 24.7%, p = 0.009). Comorbidities significantly associated with headache were: allergies (38.8% vs. 29.3%, p = 0.007), other chronic pain disorders (44.7% vs. 27.6% p < 0.001), mental health problems (53.2% vs. 29.0%, p < 0.001) and worse SDQ scores ( p < 0.001). Conclusions Headache is a common health problem among adolescents which impacts their quality of life. Headache is associated with presence of “unhealthy lifestyle” and other medical comorbidities. Educational initiatives should be started.

Background: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is an undiagnosed sensorimotor disorder that is accompanied by an unpleasant sensation in the lower limbs which cause an urge to move the leg for temporary relaxation. It causes symptoms such as insomnia, concentration and mood disturbance which affect the quality of life, job and academic performance. Objective: This study was proposed to find out the prevalence of RLS among healthcare undergraduate students with its primary complications. Method: This was a cross-sectional study, conducted in Healthcare Institutes of Karachi in July-19 to October-19. A questionnaire was given to 337 students, which was designed to diagnose RLS on the basis of criteria set by “International Restless Leg Syndrome Study Group”. The inclusion criteria were students aged between 18-25 years. Students having any neurological problem, hypertension, diabetes, pregnancy, musculoskeletal deformity or recent traumatic injuries were excluded from this study. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 22. Results: The median (IQR) age of students was 21 (20-22) years. Out of these 337 students 40(11.9%) were males and 297(88.1%) were females. Restless Leg syndrome was diagnosed in 120(35.6%) students in which 110(91.7%) were females and 10(8.3%) males. 116(34.4%) students experienced leg cramps, while RLS positive students 116(96.7%) did not seek any consultation to health care professional. Conclusion: This study concluded that there was a high prevalence of RLS among healthcare students yet remains undiagnosed. There should be more awareness programs regarding RLS to prevent its symptoms and to improve the quality of life.

Pet ownership has been shown to improve quality of life for older adults. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to compare older pet owners and older non-pet owners and assess differences between groups. This study was conducted on adults over 50 years of age, who owned either one cat or one dog versus nonowners based on age, race, gender, and education. Matched older pet owners (OPO) versus non-pet owners (NPO) pairs (n=84), older cat owners (OCO) versus non-cat owners (NCO) (n=29), and older dog owners (ODO) versus non-dog owners (NDO) pairs (n=55) were analyzed. No differences were found between OPO and NPO for dietary, activity, or lifestyle, except OPO had fewer health conditions [p<0.03]. Total OCO had greater body mass indices [BMI] (μ=29.6±8.2) than ODO (μ=23.2±5.2) [p<0.02], less activity [p<0.02], and shorter duration of activity [p<0.05] and took fewer supplements [p<0.003]. OCO and NCO differed on health conditions (μ=0.8±0.9versusμ=1.9±1.3, [p<0.008]) and ODO versus NDO differed on BMI (μ=25±4versusμ=27±6, [p<0.04]). Although there are limitations to this study, data may be useful for targeting marketing and health messages to older persons.
