This chapter presents a method for ontology construction and its application in developing ontology in the domain of natural gas pipeline operations. Both the method as well as the application ontology developed, contribute to the infrastructure of Semantic Web that provides semantic foundation for supporting information processing by autonomous software agents. This chapter presents the processes of knowledge acquisition and ontology construction for developing a knowledge-based decision support system for monitoring and control of natural gas pipeline operations. Knowledge on the problem domain was acquired and analyzed using the Inferential Modeling Technique, then the analyzed knowledge was organized into an application ontology and represented in the Knowledge Modeling System. Since ontology is an explicit specification of a conceptualization that provides a comprehensive foundation specification of knowledge in a domain, it provides semantic clarifications for autonomous software agents that process information on the Internet.

A laboratory setup of distributed drives system comprising a three-phase induction motor (IM) drive and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive is modeled, designed, and developed for the monitoring and control of the individual drives. The integrated operation of IM and PMSM drives system has been analyzed under different operating conditions, and their performance has been monitored through supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. The necessary SCADA graphical user interface (GUI) has also been created for the display of drive parameters. The performances of IM and PMSM under parametric variations are predicted through sensitivity analysis. An integrated operation of the drives is demonstrated through experimental and simulation results.

The purpose of this article is to describe the development of a prototype of a monitoring and control system for a fire-fighting system, implemented through SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) for which the OPC (OLE for process control) is known. Known KepServerEX6 (single data source connectivity platform), with which the integration of the PLC (programmable logic controller), the human-machine interface (HMI) and the computer will be controlled, with the application of monitoring the operating parameters of a fire fighting system. These parameters are the pressure and flow of the electric pump, the values of the parameters are regularly controlled automatically by means of a frequency variator, according to the sprinkler actuation, the variator varies its operating frequency until achieving the optimal pressure and flow values. The level of correlation between the indicators to be monitored by the SCADA system is highly significant, equal to 0.977, 0.983 and 0.997 respectively. In addition, the dispersion model of the indicators monitored by the SCADA system will be determined, is the quadratic, with a determination factor of 0.999.

The paper touches upon the current issues related to the use of visualisation, control and archiving systems (SCADA) in hybrid power supply systems, based on the example of an installation that uses the energy of the sun and wind. The article contains an exemplary design of an autonomous hybrid power supply system and the SCADA system implemented in the Vijeo Citect environment. The major focus is on the presentation of the essential and the most frequently used SCADA system functionalities in terms of the monitoring and control of this type of power supply systems.

Personal computers (PCs) are a powerful resource in the EM Laboratory, both as a means of automating the monitoring and control of microscopes, and as a tool for quantifying the interpretation of data. Not only is a PC more versatile than a piece of dedicated data logging equipment, but it is also substantially cheaper. In this tutorial the practical principles of using a PC for these types of activities will be discussed. The PC can form the basis of a system to measure, display, record and store the many parameters which characterize the operational conditions of the EM. In this mode it is operating as a data logger. The necessary first step is to find a suitable source from which to measure each of the items of interest. It is usually possible to do this without having to make permanent corrections or modifications to the EM.
