Disposal of sewage sludge is forbidden and agricultural use of stabilized sludge will be banned in 2005 in Switzerland. The sludge has to be dewatered, dried, incinerated and the ashes disposed in landfills. These processes are cost intensive and lead also to the loss of valuable phosphate resources incorporated in the sludge ash. The implementation of processes that could reduce excess sludge production and recycle phosphate is therefore recommended. Partial ozonation of the return sludge of an activated sludge system reduces significantly excess sludge production, improves settling properties of the sludge and reduces bulking and scumming. The solubilized COD will also improve denitrification if the treated sludge is recycled to the anoxic zone. But ozonation will partly inhibit and kill nitrifiers and might therefore lead to a decrease of the effective solid retention time of the nitrifier, which reduces the safety of the nitrification. This paper discusses the effect of ozonation on sludge reduction, the operation stability of nitrification, improvement of denitrification and gives also an energy and cost evaluation.

The management of bottlenecks has become a central topic in the planning and control of production systems. In this paper, we critically analyze bottlenecks from an economic perspective. Using a queueing network model, we demonstrate that bottlenecks are inevitable when there are differences in job arrival rates, processing rates, or costs of productive resources. These differences naturally lead to the creation of bottlenecks both for facilities design and demand planning problems. To evaluate bottlenecks from an economic perspective, we develop the notion of an “economic bottleneck,” which defines resources as bottlenecks based on economic, rather than physical, characteristics.

Achieving quality depends on how the company works, planning and control processes are essential for satisfying customers and other stakeholders. In this respect, more companies are turning to systems of excellence that allow the organization to identify problems and help them implementing improvement measures needed for development. The analysis developed in this paper aims is to examine the main processes carried out at a sugar factory by the way they are planned, managed and controlled, through the criterion – Processes- of the EFQM excellence model. The study is focused on an economic analysis of the main financial indicators of the company, in order to highlight its current situation. Applying the criteria -Processes - of the EFQM model the company can analyze its processes and it can establish improvement measures that may be applied.

In the article the new features of the intellectual work in the digital environment are given. The author gives examples of modern techniques of work measurement and monitoring of intellectual activity results. There are suggestions about creating new tools of economic analysis intended for information and analytical support of intellectual labor in the digital economy. The article is useful for scientists specializing in the fields of labor economics and economic analysis. The article can benefit practitioners working in the field of work measurement and monitoring efficiency of labor.

With the increasing prevalence of HIV infection/AIDS and the extending range of care and treatment, the economic implications of the various prevention and control strategies, and of treatment, have become the subject of interest to policy-makers, public health specialists and health economists. This paper presents an overview of the methods used for the economic analysis of AIDS/HIV infection. It proposes an activity-oriented, cost center-based model for the costing of the economic impact of AIDS, using cost figures in Singapore since 1985, when the National AIDS Control Program was started. Priorities for future research are also identified. Asia Pac J Public Health1994;7(3):143-50.

The survey was conducted to assess use of improved catfish production technologies among fish farmers in Delta State, Nigeria. Data were collected from a sample of 50 different fish farmers in Delta State using questionnaire. Frequency, percentage and mean score were used in analyzing data for the study. Results indicated that majority (70.0%) of the respondents were male, 40.0% were between  the ages of 25 and 34 years, 72.0% were married, 60.0% had a household size of 6-10 persons, 50.0% got an annual income of above ₦300,000 with 92.0% having formal education. Sources of funds for the respondents were personal savings (60.0%), friends/relations (20.0%), cooperative society (12.0%) and loans from banks (8.0%). Findings showed that improved catfish production technologies used by the respondents included fortification of cat fish feeds using root and tuber crops (M= 2.2), improved techniques in pond construction and maintenance (M= 1.7), non-conventional feed stuff for catfish (M= 1.6), fertilization and liming of catfish pond (M= 1.6), improving water quality in catfish culture (M= 1.3), prevention and control of catfish diseases (M=1.0), among others. Also, constraints to use of improved catfish production technologies were inadequate processing and storage facilities (M= 2.5), disease infestation (M= 2.3), high cost of feeds (M= 2.2), high cost of inputs (M= 2.1), inadequate funds (M= 2.1), poor market network (M= 2.0), etc. The study recommended that financial institutions should ensure timely availability of credit facilities to enable catfish farmers make provision for improved processing and storage facilities in order to boost their productivity.
